Hey guys! This time we take a look at the Dreaming World. We take a look at the way the Dreamselves of the players serve as useful tools to both the Players and the Game itself.
We also learn about the warring kingdoms of Prospit and Derse, how their distinct cultures rub off on and affect the players, and how they relate to the different Gods that influence any given session of Sburb.

According to Hussie's test, I'm a Derse Dreamer and, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense, even in the 'aggressive' term, applying to me. I mean, I want to say that I'm very trusting towards people, but I'm always expecting something to go wrong and, though I will always seek out a peaceful means of solving a problem at every turn, if I have to 'attack', so to speak, I will. And I actually enjoy fight scenes; the idea of going into battle actually gets my blood pumping. I was raised in a 'Be a Good Girl' environment and I grew up trying to fit in that role. But there was always something about me that's been rebellious, even if I was always shot down. I followed the rules, but I always felt that the rules could be better or more flexible. I love creative writing, but I always want to make the ideas I write hold a bit of rationality to make the incredible more believable/relatable to readers. I'm a perfectionist and a scaredy-cat because of my Dad, but I'm fighting to break that mold.

I am a derse but... I don't know I feel like I fit in both I am rebelious but also really passive, and not just that in general I feel like I have qualities from both I am rebelious but too scared to actually rebel so I rebel using other ways, going against the system, being the one that does not belong I have a kind nature, I can't kill a single bug, but I have violent tendencies, especially with people, when I was a kid the others kind of made fun of me because I was being violent but at the same time I didn't want to harm anyone (I held back) Also I am both positive and nihilistic (don't ask how, I have my ideologies) I am optimistic but my confidence is really bad Help

I know I am a Derse dreamer due to one simple trait that would conflict if I was a Prospit dreamer. My rebellious nature. I break the rules set in place naturally and sometimes forget I'm even breaking the rules because breaking them is so natural to me. I am also a skeptic, I especially question theories I find for Homestuck. I am just as the Derse dreamer description says, marked by skepticism. I also reflect the part where it says Derse dreamers are likely to live in a state of dissatisfaction.

"Moon" and "Planet" kind of start losing all meaning if you think about the Incipisphere too hard. It's like Super Mario Galaxy with all the confusion of astronomical terms.

Prospit and Derse aren't moons, they're referred to as planets in Homestuck, and when they talk about moons, they're talking about Prospit's and Derse's moons, not the planets themselves.

The Genesis Frog contains one universe, But within one universe is an infinite causality of branching timelines, the extreme ends of which are so different (by nature of being infinite) that they are basically completely different realities that simply play by the same rules.

Never thought about those parallels between different higher powers in sburb and existing cultural conceptions of divinity, and I can really get behind this approach. Although, I feel like equating the players' rise to godhood with grecoroman dvinity hinges on it being its own category standing next to the other three, which frankly it isn't; The human qualities of those deities are very pronounced, but that really doesn't fall out of the ordinary with polytheistic pantheons all over the world. I'd be much more inclined to compare it to the topos of greek heroes ascending to godhood in death, like heracles did or example, or the postmortem divinization of roman rulers. Also a sidenote on lovecraft: While I think that your assessment of the horrorterrors' place in this system is precise, I don't think that it has much to do with lovecraft himself. Hussie used his idea of unknowable cosmic beings, applied the style, and put them into a hierarchical system reminiscent of Lovecraft, but Lovecraft himself really didn't treat his pantheon as actual religious deities. He tried to, to some extend, but he straight up didn't get past his own preconceived notions of how culture and religion work/evolve/function within society. He mentions worship, but in the end it always boils down to materialistic transactions, just with aliens instead of beings, and vague mentions of cultural practice he never understood or even bothered to research past a superficial level. The few info we even get from lovecraft's own work allow readers to frame the conception the worshippers of those cosmic deities have as somewhat henotheistic or monolatric. Kind of went on a tangent here, sry.

Fair point on the Lovecraft stuff! I didn't mean to imply that all of these models of divnity were originally conceptualized as objects of religious worship, but I can definitely see how that comes across. My bad. I was only attempting to describe a broad fictional archetype Lovecraft sketched out, which Hussie then adapted and narratively positioned as equivalent to these other "deities." The point on the Grecoroman pantheon is good, too, so I wanted to clarify my position a bit. I stress the Grecoroman pantheon **specifically** not because it is particularly unique compared to those featured in other cultures, but rather because Homestuck itself puts quite a bit of focus on Grecoroman mythology. That's going to matter more as we explore the characters later on, I suspect, especially given how heavily the later parts of Homestuck deal in mythological themes. One quick example: Yaldabaoth, Caliborn's denizen and the deity he comes to represent as Lord English, is by some accounts originally a Greek criticism of Zeus. So we can view Caliborn as somewhat analogous to Zeus, at least about as much as he might be linked to the Old Testament god Yaldabaoth himself is a criticism of-- and I've argued previously that Caliborn/Lord English/Lil Cal represent a warped version of Son/Father/Holy Ghost, so its fair to say that's already my ballpark. That link is notable in my eyes mainly because Zeus is credited with the defeat and entrapment of Typheus, who by differing accounts is either killed or trapped. This shines an interesting light on Caliborn trapping John and the rest of the Betas in the Masterpiece. I wouldn't say its KEY TO THE ENDING or anything, but it is an interesting bit of parallelism, and is one of many details that make it clear to me there clearly WAS artistic thought and foresight put into the ending, however dissatisfied it left many people. Drawing out nuances like these is what I'm seeking to accomplish in the long term, so I try to keep things focused on what Homestuck itself seems to value. Hopefully that explains why I favored Grecoroman pantheons in particular. Also, no need to ever worry about tangents. As evidenced by my response, I'm a big fan of them myself. Nice one. Very nice. This is a part I haven't thought about in as much depth as classes and aspects so this is a really helpful summary of Sburb's cosmology, and another great example of how Homestuck references literally everything. Freud, Jung, Lovecraft, four different flavors of religion...ah, five or six really, the Taoist and Buddhist references are still a thing and neither of those religions has "gods" in any conventional sense. Also nice Utena shout-out. I've got a friend nagging me to watch that and I'm sure you're tell me the same thing, revolutionaryDuelist. I do want to point out one small thing - the divine right of kings isn't *strictly* Christian, although other religions have called it by different names with different reasonings. China for millennia had its governments justify themselves by the "Mandate of Heaven", divine blessings which could be given or taken away from an Emperor based on his piety and competence. Also, Sburb may be closer to the very ancient idea of a God-King, a ruler whose right to reign comes from the fact that he is himself a deity, or descended from one. Famous instances of this include the Ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures, Japan until the end of World War II, and the pre-Christian Roman Empire. In fact, it could be argued that the Divine Right of Kings as a concept was created as a replacement for the Roman Emperor's justification of rule through divine blood. "Well I worship God now instead of Jupiter, and I can't say I'm descended from God, but I can say I have his official seal of approval."

I will definitely also say watch Utena. There's a lot of common blood with Homestuck in it--I probably wouldn't be doing this series right now if I hadn't been drawn into terms like "Abraxas" and "Light" by both works, and I'd say my understanding of one has enriched the other. Hopefully I'll make that clear whenever I expand to videos about Utena, too ;) I'm happy you enjoyed this one, too! And you're quite right about other cultural principles similar to the Divine Right of Kings. I kept it focused to what I knew and to the symbolism Homestuck seems to emphasize, but even on that front its always possible I'm missing stuff. Rule through divine blood sounds like something I'm going to have to research in particular, because that sounds at least as close to what Homestuck's doing as Divine Right, and Homestuck's about as Greek as it is outright Gnostic. What do you know, I also had a bizarre Japanese work that served as a Homestuck gateway drug, although in my case, it was a postmodernist visual novel called Umineko no Naku Koro Ni (or Umineko: When They Cry for the official English version) teaching me the joys of stories about storytelling, multi-tiered reality, "canon" vs. "reality", and my favorite character murdering a bunch of people and then laughing about it. I'd recommend it, but it's almost as long as this thing and I want you to keep making videos.

The First Guardians exist to protect the planet and ensure the game is played in the first place. The players don't *need* to be paradoxes, but the Sburb players we follow needed to be because...that's just how they were born. They wouldn't exist otherwise. Caliborn and Calliope are born naturally, though, and it's implied a lot of humans played Sburb. So it doesn't seem like being a paradox clone is a requirement to play the game.

1. We're told about it through Doc Scratch's introduction: "Scratch is Alternia's FIRST GUARDIAN. Every planet destined for intelligent life has such an entity meant to protect it, and facilitate the planet's ultimate purpose. A first guardian is typically almost as old as the planet itself, and each has a unique, circuitous origin through the knots of paradox space. They can be born into a great diversity of forms, though they all share a common, especially potent genetic sequence. The Cal twins are certainly special cases in a lot of ways. It just doesn't seem like actually getting to play the game is one of them. Fedorafreak is probably the closest we get to an indication of what playing the game is like for non-ectobiologized players, and he's implied to God Tier.

Yup! Just before he talks to Nannasprite and hears her story, fedorafreak says this: fedorafreak: encountered rest surface. fedorafreak: horizontal stone slab *exhibiting unidentified iconography.* fedorafreak: *a tall post at each corner.* fedorafreak: mysteriously inviting. fedorafreak: mounting slab. exhaustion taking hold. He's heavily wounded, but he's come across his god tier slab. The design he describes is pretty much identical to John's, with the posts on each corner and the Aspect icon imprinted onto it. He's implied to die on it, but whether he actually god tiers or is simply doomed is left for the reader to decide.

I think your description of the Horrorterrors doesn't take into account many of the actual events in Homestuck. It's possible they are motivated by players proving themselves to them and lead them towards self-destruction and they are very clearly selfish and uncaring, but I thought the very clear reason was that the continuation of the player's chain of sessions lead to Lord English, who is actually commiting genocide on them. A lot of this is talked about in the squiddles song lyrics with Plumbthroat as a reference to LE. In that way Lord English and Skaia actually share a goal in some way, even if it is more forced upon Skaia. The Horrorterrors are disrupting the players out of self-interest while Skaia is working for the player's personal benefit, but by failing to stop Caliborn and allowing him to go through his own personal growth into the Lord of Time and eventually LE, Skaia has inevitably lead to the conflict to begin with. Skaia and the Horrorterrors are opposing forces but they aren't opposites, or even sides of the same coin. Much like most ideas, they share some kind of basis.

I don't think we have any reason to assume Skaia *could* stop Caliborn. You said yourself the Horrorterrors have a vested interest in deterring LE, after all, and they would have had as much influence on Caliborn's early session as Skaia. Why would they need Skaia to intervene when they could endeavor to smother him in the crib themselves? And what could Skaia--the far more Passive of the two--do to stop Caliborn that the Horrorterrors couldn't? More to the point, I don't think Skaia particularly wants the Horrorterrors to be destroyed. They oppose each other in any particular Sburb game, yes, but if anything it seems to me Skaia **needs** the Horrorterrors to maintain the Sburb system and continue perpetuating itself. In Rose's words, threatening the Horrorterrors is threatening existence itself, which isn't advantageous to Skaia at all. All of that said, I was only attempting to discuss their role in the context of the Game here. I don't regard the Horrorterrors as outright antagonists in the story of Homestuck itself--only Lord English, and by association Caliborn, really hold that role. Hopefully that demonstrates my viewpoint, at least.

I didn't mean to imply that Skaia could stop Caliborn, nor the Horrorterrors. But I think that the Horrorterrors are at least primarily motivated to stop the sessions because of LE's creation. It's ultimately pointless, because as we know he's already here. The Horrorterrors are presented as desperate and/or scared multiple times because of this. And I also didn't mean to convey that Skaia wants the Horrorterrors destroyed, but that Skaia is favoring the players' success over the destruction of LE. They are obviously codependent, or at least it seems that way from our limited perspective of them through the lens of mortals. My main point was that the video painted the Horrorterrors more like beings opposed to self-actualization in the players and partially to the perpetuation of existence, but showed it more as they are just that purpose, or that they represent that idea. I think their duality is more of self-centered versus world-centered, which mirrors the active and passive parallels a lot closely than the Death Drive versus Life Drive which seem more like the effect, not the cause.

In Sollux's case, it means two extra lives. Considering that the moons influence Active/Passive sway, I might guess they also have something to do with his "bipolar" behavior, what with wildly shifting between two extremes of behavior and the like. Again though, that's just a guess.

John Ryu Well, Sollux died while entering the game due to Feferi's lusus, so if he had just 1 dreamself that would mean he would have 0 extra lives. That would be pretty unfair to him from Skya's part.

I embody the description of derse dreamers. I am a skeptic, I never just believe something I always doubt things. I am rebellious I never follow the rules it's become a habit to break them.

Yknow, thinking about it, Skaia and the Horrorterrors as you explain them here have very strong parallels to Dirk and Alt!Calliope in the epilogues. Dirk taking the place of the horrorterrors and directly influencing the players by pushing his will on them through the narrative, in some cases like Terezi pretty much directly speaking to them to influence their choices. Much like how the horrorterrors whisper to players like Rose to do their bidding. Meanwhile, taking the passive approach of Skaia, Calliope takes the route of simply narrating the other's feelings and helping them through vague hints, such as when Jade pointed in the direction Dirk was headed. Very similarly to how Skaia gives players vague hints of the future through it's clouds.

There were aspects I liked and aspects I didn't. I was just pointing out a parallel I noticed lol I never said I liked it as canon or said they were well written.

According to the extended zodiac I am a Prospit dreamer, and despite being quite pessimistic or nervous, it makes sense. I am a nervous person because I want others to be peaceful with me, although sometimes I have to move away from them so as not to attack. I was never an aggressive person, just a little clumsy, but wanting to change that made me a shy person with certain things, but even if I try to be cautious about some things, I will always be a little clumsy about something. Supposedly Prospit dreamers tend to have insecurities, and that's basically why I'm nervous and shy, like Tavros. But on the other hand, I usually have negative thoughts, but even if I have ten thousand negative thoughts, I would never be so spiteful with someone. Another thing is that I usually have a fairly small group of friends, but that's what I have now in adolescence, in childhood I always had many friends, but I still only had one or two favorites, since I've always wanted to help people with socialization problems, so taking your eyes off them for a while might be ugly for them. Now I identified with those friends. And finally, I was always a good person and when my parents argued I tried to calm them down (limeblood reference?????) Maybe I am a Prospit dreamer and what makes me think that maybe I am a Derse dreamer is that I am a Heir of Time (I know because of my hypothyroidism)

So, just to be sure I'm getting this straight, it is possible to share traits associated with both moons? I'm sure you already answered this but it leads to my next question, how many traits do you have to associate with on one moon to be put there over the other? Is it majority or just really strong traits?

I don't really know how I'd quantify questions like that, or if it's even a good idea. I guess I'd say it can be either--it all depends on what you want the narrative to emphasize. That's true whether you're writing fan characters, or whether you like using the whole sburb construct to help construct your internal narrative of yourself. It is definitely possible to share traits with both moons--Sollux is literally on both moons, after all. And if "Active" corresponds to Derse and "Passive" to Prospit, then it might be fair to say that Active classes tend to be more akin to Derse, even if they are Prospit dreamers. Ditto for the opposite. It's entirely possible Hiveswap will give us some more specific answers through the "Lunar Sway" conceit, but for now, that's all I can say.

i know this isnt about the topic of the video, but there could (theoretically) be a fourth type of sburb session. so far, we have dead - one player and doomed to fail against an impossible race against time, as you need a minimum of two in order to win (space and time players). we have void, where no sprites are prototyped before entering, doomed to failure but (if its the result of a scratch) created specifically so that the original players can use it to win. and we have the standard session, where all sprites are prototyped before entering. the standard session can become a null session because of various metaphysical causes, such as glitches or a poorly-created genesis frog. but what if, say, in two-player session only one sprite is prototyped before entering? you would have a spare empty sprite lying around that didnt help contribute to the prototyping of skia. would this be a standard session? would the player who failed their prototype be considered noncanon by paradox space and do nothing of significance? i figure that the session would be beatable because skia was prototyped at least once, but i still cant help but wonder what would happen if one of the players messed up.

i’m a derse dreamer but i would hate the dersites and the horrorterrors. I would gladly take blue skies and clouds and the eros drive and skaia over black skies and prideful gods. If i was sure it wouldn’t backfire i would probably set out to kill a few horrorterrors just because i don’t like the idea of them thinking they’re ALL THAT compared to me and my friends and them having control over me. I love frogs and i love yellow and after i flipped the bird at the black queen i would fly over to Prospit to have fun idgaf

Pretty sure someone has said this but, we could look at the assigned moons as which side of your brain influences you more. For example my moon, which is Derse, could represent my left brain which is the more analytical and more linear side of me and that would make sense because for someone like Rose or Dirk the both are very analytical with how they do things. And if it was someone from Prospit their dominate side would be the right brain which is more emotional and more creative and that fits with John and Jade since both of them had to be creative to do tasks given to them.

something that might make creating an original character easier is better understanding the correlation between class and aspect, so here's an idea; a series on explaining every classpect combo, in pairs or something at a time. I personally love the lore, but i find it hard to grasp most of the time. i'm typically only able to do so when i'm in a particularly dead-set course of action. or... frame of mind. because i affiliate most closely with that of the Mind aspect. puns.

You forgot one kind of God: The Denizens, The monstrous powerhouses that act as the bosses of the Player's world's. Given that many of them are not revealed, and have conflicting origins You mentioned Abraxas as the culmination of Skaia and The Genesis Frog, and it's worth noting that Abraxas is also a figure in Homestuck's lore, a Denizen that seems to share some parallel with Yaldabaoth, as they both have Gnostic origins; while the rest of the Denizens have primarily Greek origins, and seem to have some relationship with the aspects of the players they are assigned to.

So who's Kayaka exactly? And when exactly does Vriska say her line about controlling a universe? Are these from HiveSwap? Also what are the different kingdom banners from? I am so confused.

Shadethewolfy I'm assuming you haven't gotten too far yet? I'll try to answer without spoiling too much, but basically: 1) "Kayaka" is Rose slurring Kanaya's name; 2) It's from Homestuck; 3) I'm assuming you mean the kingdom banners from Prospit and Derse. Just keep reading and it'll all be clear, my friend ;)

I just heard this term for the first time. I'm looking into it, and just considering how rooted in Greek philosophy and mythology Homestuck already is, it seems likely.
