Listen to John. He nailed it. A chapter of your life closed, you are grieving that loss, but a new chapter is starting. Your daughter will always be around, but the relationship is going to be different...because you did a good job.

Having friends that lost daughters at that age makes it pretty obvious why this stage is an emotional stage in her/their lives. Her daughter lived through miracles. She's an awesome mother that is a rock star and the people that comment otherwise can step off.

Parenting is just one long process of milestones, and while we’re SO happy that our children meet these milestones, no one tells you what a grief process it is. We raise them to let them go, but it sure is hard. Hugs, Mama. ♥️

Well stated. I am SO glad for my two grown children who are married. (One is unmarried, working, and living with us.) Love their spouses. Proud of them all. But they live far away. We seldom get to see them. They're busy. We rarely hear from them. I keep telling myself this is "normal" but have many bouts of depression and loneliness, missing them so much I can hardly breathe. I have gone on...am living...doing what needs to be done. But a part of it doesn't feel right. I anticipated all of us being in each others' lives a lot more than we are. It feels so sad.

My god this call made me weep. I'm blessed that my mom is just like this wonderful lady. I know it was hard for her when I moved out and got married but she's always been my cheerleader. She was diagnosed with breast cancer this past year and it's been rough. Thankfully she's doing well and about to have surgery in a few weeks. Moms can really be angels. I'm very lucky and so is this caller's Daughter.

Raising children is bittersweet. There is always the loss of different stages. I heard someone point out you lose your baby but get a toddler. Then you lose your toddler and get a kid. Then lose the kid for a teenager. Your teenager is lost when they become an adult and leave the nest. Then you’re so proud but do have to feel a little loss at that child who is gone. ❤😢

This resonates so much. It is so hard when your kids get to where youve been preparing them for. When you invest so much for so long, you end up in a place you didnt know was in your path. But you got them to where they needed to be. Plus this mom had all the extra of getting her daughter to even experience childhood, teenage years, and marriage. A great thing to celebrate.

In my culture when we get married, the bride has a morning party where her family gives her away. Traditionally, the bride is solemn and weeps as she leaves. My American friends are always confused. They thought I was being forced to get married. Nope! It’s supposed to be sad when you leave your parents. The happy part comes after.

It is also very “normal” to feel a lot of grief after a wedding. It’s the build up, the hype, and the job of creating such a special day for this wonderful girl, that you’ve obviously loved through some horrendous health issues. But great loves crests great grief. And Mama.. you love your girl!! So feel what you feel. And enjoy your baby girl And her boy!! And continue to run with her to the finish line ♥️

As a parent, if you don't allow your children to become full adults there are consequences. If you stunt their growth or shame them for growing up the psychological and self esteem impacts are huge. I am the product of this. I am 35, college educated, work a 6 figure corporate job, however for so long I was ridiculed and beat down that now I am struggling to finally start adulthood and find a home of my own, knowing that when I leave all hell will break loose from my mother. I grieve and cry a lot knowing I am now probably too old to meet a man and have a family of my own. Caller, your world and identity should be more than just being a "mother." You need hobbies, education, career, etc. Good luck
@mariastathopoulos744

@juicysmith38235 Be proud of your achievements. So you're a late bloomer and that's OK because you have the desire for full independence. I suggest finding a rental, even shared, to start off. Give yourself 3-6 months to find a small unit / home to purchase. Apply for a mortgage loan etc. I had my first child at 37 and my second child at 39. It's not too late to get the life you want. Just do it.

My daughter is a teenager (sometimes a difficult one) and I so often think back to when she was a sweet little baby girl and it feels like she’s a different person. I sometimes get this sad feeling of grief when I think about her younger years. I imagine I’ll be feeling more grief when she’s grown and moves out on her own. I think as a parent we always feel some kind of grief as they move through different stages of life because everything continuously changes as they grow up. I feel like I’m not explaining this very well but hopefully people get it 😩 bless this lady. She’s a good mama.

I mourned my perfectly healthy daughter after she got married, too. I'd just go cry in her room for weeks. It didn't help that she was also moving halfway across the country. Everything was so exciting before -- the engagement, bridal shower, the wedding ... what a giant letdown when it was all over and she was just GONE. But I promise you, this will pass! Make use of facetime, visit as often as is reasonable and rejoice that you have another child now -- her husband! Dote on him and make sure he is thrilled to see you always so that he encourages your daughter to keep your relationship close. And btw, my husband DID NOT mourn anything about this at all -- which made me feel more alone. Strengthen your relationship with your girlfriends and confide in them. Decide to get some new hobbies, book club, photography, quilting, anything to get you out there and thinking of something else. Again, this is normal and will pass with time. Blessing to you!

I just want to say that people in long-term serious relationships shouldn't be focused on other people like this.. I've been with the same man for 8 years now. Not married, just committed and doing life together. We trust each other and both have friends of the opposite sex. HOWEVER, we do not have "best friends" that are a different gender.. I know he's coming home to me at the end of the night (and vice versa) so my guy is allowed to see other females in a friendly capacity but I do reserve the right to ask where they're going/ why this lady needs him alone lol. Things have worked out so far 🤷🏽‍♀️ Communication is key and if you want to fck someone else, PLEASE have the decency of breaking up with your significant other first. Don't be lowkey running around behind your partners back 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

People forget that being a parent is a role, not an identity. It's a type of codependency that many modern parents deal with letting go off when their children are no longer children. Her response is very normal. Your whole life is pretty much child centered, so of course once they are gone and living adult lives, it's going to be tough to not feel emptiness.

Self pity is seductive. My best friend in university died when she was 19 because of a car accident. My sister died at 24 from Multiple Sclerosis. My daughter died when she was 4 years old due to a neurological disease. My take is this: mum has to sidestep now and that is challenging her, that her daughter has left home and is married. Part empty nest blues and part of mum's realisation that her youth is gone. Mum is also probably going through menopause/ post menopausal and the hormonal shift is tricky to navigate. Its an even chance that parents could die before daughter so why speak of daughter as being terminal? Anyway celebrate that your daughter is experiencing her life to the fullest. Now Mum has to redefine herself living in her new chapter of life.
