We did it! Our ceiling is finally installed! It may have taken 5 days, but it's up! We went with birch plywood and a negative reveal. We're super happy with how it turned out!

Normally just plywood looks so rough it's terrible, but having good quality sheets and adding the subtle design element of the grid makes it really sharp. Amazing idea.

From an architect's viewpoint, the negative reveal along with the subway tile staggered placement of ceiling panels really adds great depth & dimension pattern! My own personal thoughts are; anything square is boring - be creative & curvy! Love the design guys!

Love the ceiling panels as is but I know you need to protect them. Also - in response to your question about keeping cool on Sunday...living in Tucson in the summer during my childhood my mom would make us a "pool" by stacking bricks and using an old shower curtain. We loved it and used water guns to add to the fun and coolness!! You could use a large plastic tarp and create makeshift walls out of any materials on hand to replace the tank you used last summer. Trust me - this makeshift pool can bring fun and water coolness to your family (don't forget the water guns -AND- adding ice water in the guns will really cools you off!!!!)

I know you bought a mini split but I suggest you take a cue from the earth ship folks and consider a 6" x 25 foot pipe that's barried in the ground a few feet down, with a screen on the recieving end and a fan on the end that reaches under the wall and inside the hyper structure to bring in cool air. And maybe an insolated door might help? You might find yourself in a much cooler place.

Are you going to try a lime wash or lime putty on the ceiling panels? It binds with wood perfectly! Then you could lime plaster the cob inside and out for water proofing! Just add lime safe pigments to your lime plaster or lime putty for colors that you choose. Voila! Beautiful, Natural, Earthen materials that breathe and are carbon negative with no off gassing of chemicals!

It is a special finish plywood with birch. For this look it is well worth the money. I think they said it had been in the store for a long time so they got a good deal on it. Plywood is running about $90 a sheet so I hope they didn't have to pay that!

From this side of the camera you’re doing a great job. Using a shadow line between the plywood is really going to cut down on the amount of labor normally involved in finishing a traditional drywall ceiling. Once you finish the plywood your done.

Nice show guys! Lucky that you were doing that ceiling a few days ago. 105 here at 10am today in the Northern Arizona High Desert. New record here 🥴. Your dad made a huge impact on making this project work. Boiled linseed oil is a good finish but we always test on a scrap to judge the color change. Clear urethane also has worked well for us too. Good luck with finishing. Take care.

Do you know if there’s a poly that goes on more like a wax? Don’t really want to do brush work over my head with that stuff dripping down. And the sanding between coats doesn’t sound like fun
@BrainStormAcres
@BrainStormAcres 3 года назад
@@TinyShinyHome we’ve used poly on a rag before. Get a decent piece of white cloth that doesn’t shed like a t shirt. Bundle / fold it up into a ball about the size of two hands. Dip one side the the cloth into the poly so that a few layers get saturated. Lightly wipe the excess off the surface.The goal is to have poly in the cloth at a relatively saturated first/second layer. Wipe it on the ceiling in 2-3 foot rubs. I’d wear a hair covering and goggles against the errant drip. You’ll have to judge how often you need to recharge your cloth as you go. I used this approach when I stained and poly coated our beams in the great room. I used satin poly which did not give a high sheen, but looked more oiled without changing the color. Two warnings - we finished our beams before they went up, and ideally you want to do this before it gets too hot otherwise the poly can congeal. Based on our temps up here, that means EARLY in the morning like half an hour before the sun comes up. If you’d like to chat in the phone, you can email us from the ABOUT page on our channel and we’ll give you our a home number.

Looks great, great concept. I just hope you do something to keep the scorpions out. They like to come in where it is cooler in the heat. I killed 7 here at my Texas cabin when I moved in in August. You can see them with a black light. They will climb in thru your gray water pipes if uncovered, and you will find them on the ceiling & everywhere. Just one more pest to watch out for.

Right on, looks good 🙂👍! When you put this next coat on are you going too use stucco plaster mixed in, or on the walls, that white plaster even if mixed would strengthen and lighten the color in there! I'm thinking that either a sealer, or oil would keep the water from the cob from getting into the wood! And what do you think about boxing the beam out and using rough sawn material, to give the look of a big beam 😁👍 take care, keep hydrated and God bless amen.

Love the way the bottle light - reflects on the new ceiling! ;0) Is it possible to mount a large (20 x 40) Green House Shade Cloth - over your Air Stream - to allow it to be shaded. An idea for the ceiling/wall plywood/cob interface: protect the plywood with a sill seal gasket strip (e.g. www.amazon.com/Dow-Sill-Seal-Foam-Gasket/dp/B004EJVHDC/ but there’s a billion options). Make sure it overlaps where the cob will go, staple it to the plywood but make sure the staples are in areas to be covered by cob. Mask the plywood out a ways from the wall or finish it with poly or something that you can clean. Then you can cob right up to the gasket and when done, trim the seal back so as to recess a little. Then get some black sealant and run a bead all the way around in the recess to complete your negative reveal.
@killcrazyvegan
@killcrazyvegan 3 года назад
alternatively you can just leave a gap at the top (use a spacer to ensure a consistent gap). When the cob is dry, stuff some backer rod into the gap and fill with flexible expanding foam, trim to recess and use the black sealant. I’m not certain how you feel about expanding foam VOCs, but if you let it outgas a bit and then seal it you’ll minimize any exposure.
