SD won’t trade Tatis or Mochado, and no one will take Boegarts at this point… so it’s Soto in a trade or anxiety that he walks for free. I looked up SD pay roll recently… a bunch of dudes are getting paid currently or are up now or soon… guys like Soto, Snell, Hader, Cronenworth, Carpenter… they may lose basically much of their team… but if SD could sign or extend Soto and work a deal to trade him somewhere, that’d be ideal for SD… to at least acquire young pieces or prospects back. Lastly I had forgotten that Darvish was on their team.. dude is 37 and makes 17 million a year… bet SD is upset at themselves for that one. I’d say Boegarts and Darvish are their worst contracts as of now.

Respectfully, as a dodger fan. I have not even heard of any rumors of them trading away Tatis/Xander. I’m normally entrenched in baseball media but this is the first I’ve heard of it. I also don’t think SD has a feasible shot of landing Ohtani. Bias aside, they’ve got financial issues as is given the reports of the loans and losing a tv deal last season. Hard to imagine they’d add a player for $40M to maybe even $50M AAV

Who wants Cronenworth? In hindsight, the March 2023 extension isn't looking to good, and I'm pretty sure they'd need to pay someone to take it over. Moving him isn't going to save them any short-term cash, even if they find a trade partner.

Cronenworth had +8.2 fWAR in 2021-2022. The only second basemen in those two seasons with more fWAR were Jose Altuve and Marcus Semien, essentially making him the top 2B in the NL, in terms of WAR. Yes, I know WAR isn't the best measurement of all time, but if he can recapture anything he did for the first three years of his career, he'd be a steal. He never even makes $13 million in any season. Even for a 2-3 WAR player that wouldn't be a horrible deal.

Pads wanted to sign players they needed to compete with in the short term then dump them after they won. But I think they see now they need more to win and are ready to start tearing down.

This was most likely written by people who are looking for clicks. Only one that would make sense would be Xander. That contract is really clogging things up financially, and logistically with brining up players from minor leagues, AND limiting which players to keep (Snell, Hader, Wacha, etc.) But good luck with that Padres. Unless they can convince the eventual new GM of the Red Sox to bring back their franchise player, and be known as the GM who got Xander back, I don’t know which team would take that contract.

Everyone has a no trade clause. It just gives the player that feeling that he has the power to be where he wants, understandably so, the feeling that he won't have to worry about his future being in someone else's hands. But a lot of the time, players waive those no trade clauses

Padres are in a bad spot. They really needed to double down in 2024 after what looks like a tough luck season in 2023, but it sure seams like their finances are not going to allow it. If they really need to cut $50M from payroll, they're not going to be able to restock a pitching staff that's losing two of it's top starters to free agency. What options does that leave them? Hope they can rebuild quickly while paying Bogaerts, Tatis and Machado to play on a team fighting to stay above .500?

The only thing about going after ohtani is he will bring in a better tv deal and massive amounts of merch sales. He’s an international superstar who quite literally can move the needle for other things to fall in place.

Padres just need to go hard for Ohtani and assess where they are at the trade deadline, with or without Ohtani. At worst, by the end of next season they’ll be in the WS or have a farm system full of “future stars”. Padre fans are used to rebuilding and won’t notice.

While I don’t think the Padres will be in on Ohtani, what makes you think someone couldn’t sign Ohtani to a backloaded deal? He’s not necessarily gonna make 40-ish in 24, especially since he’s not pitching, some team may structure it to be cheaper year one and loaded elsewhere.

Its not a sustainable model to run a team like that. You just cannot keep signing multiple players to long term multimillion dollar deals like that. It just doesnt work. A couple of guys ok but there is a threshold of diminishing returns.

The Padres need a Television deal, since Bally's went bankrupt, Maybe Signing Ohtani and keeping Soto and Tatis, ups what they could get in a rich TV deal. The only problem with trading Bogarets would be, you'd have to eat most of his contact and you'd have to throw in some prospects.

On Ohtani to the Padres I don't think it's a payroll problem as much as it's a revenue problem. If anyone in baseball can bring in more money then the value of his contract it has to be ohtani.

The reasons a Tatis trade would be stupid is correct on all points ya mentioned. But if I can make one point to actually trade him, it’s addition by subtraction in the locker room. I’m sure Padres fans are tired of hearing it, but when Tatis was in the lineup for ‘21 and ‘23, Padres didn’t make the postseason. Then he’s out for the entirety of ‘22 and they’re in the NLCS. That’s something that’s hard to ignore. Will Tatis actually be traded for this? Hell no, or at least not in the near future. But with AJ Preller still sticking, firing yet another manager, ya gotta wonder what the Padres can do to right the ship before turning into the definition of insanity.

The loan was necessary because Bally Sport is going under and the TV Deal went south. The loan essentially covered the loss of the TV deal. Word is Bally Sports is going under so other teams will probably have loss in revenue in the future.

The dumbest thing the Padres did was sign xander. He made zero sense. Tatis is worth 30 cents on the dollar at this point. That teams a wreck. That 50MM loan is probably going right into another teams account along with 1 massive contract to unload someone and keep Soto.

What about a Soto trade to the Ms for Kelenic, Cade Marlowe, Harry Ford, Bryce Miller and one of either Emerson Hancock/Ashton Izzi/Walter Ford/Taylor Dollard. SD gets a lefty bat that has shown the early stages of breaking out in Kelenic, outifeld depth in Marlowe, a top 50 prospect in Harry Ford, a projected #3 or #4 SP in Miller, and pitching depth with lots of controlable years

Tatis has a no trade clause until 2028 and Xander has a no trade clause. Please do research before posting please. Soto is most likely gone and maybe cronenworth. Their pay roll goal is 200-225 Mil. We will just lack pitching

That was a big fat lie…Tati Jr. is well loved by the hometown fans…and his teammates. The Padres should have traded guys at the deadline last year like the Mets did. I still find it incredibly stupid that they didn't do that. The Padres clearly aren't good with their money given how much money they have seemingly thrown at Judge and Turner and made a hail mary play to get Boegarts as if they are playing MLB the show Franchise without budgets on. If they were smart, they would trade Soto, Tatis, Boegarts or two of those names and not go after Othani.

tatis or soto to ATL best outfield in the sport and in even better offense then 2023. tatis can play short or any outfield position. Soto can play LF or DH ozuna is gone next season.
