I'm thrilled the husband took his daughter to be tested anyway. A mind like hers needs to be nurtured-for her mental health and her growth.

I hope the husband takes the divorce and separates from that Entitled Karen! She sounds like she only married him for his MONEY and a rich/lavish lifestyle, being treated like a queen and NEVER having to do a single thing, let alone being a mother. What a disgusting scumbag she is!

seriously! I was never that gifted but in 7th grade it was obvious that my math skills were a bit higher so the teacher recommended that I test into honor's math. I saw the packet of extra homework they wanted me to do and said "nope". One of my worst decisions, 8th-grade math was hell! I would do the homework in class the day it was assigned and get yelled at for not paying attention. I would try to not work on homework and pay attention but the topics were so easy and boring I just zoned out then I would get yelled at again. Then my classmates would ask for help with the work and then get mad at me for trying to help (our brains just worked differently, what worked for me wasn't helpful at all to them). I tested into honors for 9th grade and it was so much better. Math was interesting again!

Absolutely. The mom should be over the moon that her child is at an advanced level. I'm at a higher level in English. Regular English is the same thing to me, just the same repeated things that are really simple concepts(at least to me.) Advanced English actually requires me to work hard and I'm actually learning things while getting college credit for it.

Secondly, never EVER accept a counter offer for leaving your current job. With three kids I guess that’s pretty demanding? Maybe she could at least get two days with her in-laws help. But that is a long time in the car for a 2yo.” Then “oh wait yeah the in-laws could easily and probably want to look after their grandkid whilst she does the driving. That’s a reasonable solution and being a stay at home parent this is kinda your job. She still has time for other things and hopefully the dad still helps with household tasks” then “wait… she has a cleaner? What is her job then if it isn’t to look after the kids? Drive your daughter to the education she needs you lazy sod.”

They love phrases like “the truth hurts” and “you have to be cruel to be kind” and consider any objections you make to be you in denial. And the end goal as far as I can tell is feeling like such a good person for pulling you out of your miserable condition to be as perfect as they are. It’s not always as invasive as this, though. Sometimes you just get caught in a car with an old lady who thinks all women should cook for their husbands and when she finds out you don’t she starts pelting you with solutions to every objection and offering you casserole recipes. From such people I’ve learned this… never make excuses, never play along, they only see that as a doorway to more interference. Pull them up short. Just like OP did!

You cannot fix them, They're never gonna do better. On the other side they don't actually want to fix you, It's not about making you the best THING they can use. The best version of you for them is not a human with their own thoughts and feelings. It is an unthinking obedient doll.

Story 3: If the boyfriend had a sudden about face about her dress after praising it, what happened is that someone said something to him about it - likely a parent or very close family member that he sees as a permanent fixture in his life and would be devastated to have them say something negative about his partner. I think a lot of us have been there where you see someone for a while, you’re on cloud 9, you tell your parents about this great new person excitedly, you show them a picture of your new love…and then the tone of the conversation changes from excitement to cold like a traffic light. One or both of the parents have something to say about how they look - their race, their weight, their personal style, or maybe the person you adore is just not good-looking enough for their precious child in their eyes - and then that balloon full of happiness you had just deflates. So, instead of taking the disagreeable party to task on making a snap judgment, the boyfriend has taken it to heart and is now faulting OP for dressing as she always has, and wants to change her to appease this important person who took umbrage. He’s using their same talking points coupled with the invisible majority tactic to shame her - implying vaguely that “so many people” have issues with her personal style, but never gives any specifics on who when pressed. Boyfriend wants to keep his cake and eat it, too, but doesn’t realize that he can have one or the other, but both is impossible. OP is well rid of this spineless wuss of a boyfriend.

@@abiean222 - I’ll allow for the possibility. It does happen in other cases - for example, when someone says from the outset that they don’t want kids, and the other person agrees with it. But what does Juliet want? Both parents made decisions but no one seems to have after Juliet. Of course everybody is assuming that Juliet would want the better education. But she very well might not. Just because she's unhappy at her current school doesn't mean she would want to change schools. I know as a person who also was pretty much a reading chapter books in kindergarten and whatnot that I found school to be a lot worse once I started to being "challenged" I went from being lonely but at the very least good at school to being lonely and being bad at school, which subsequently destroyed my enjoyment of school itself my willingness to learn and my caring from anyting after ninth grade. I had been really excited about school before that, I usually knew what to do I usually do the answers and I could figure out answers I didn't know and I could help other students and the teachers liked me. Then suddenly everything with a struggle I wasn't allowed to do any extracurriculars because of my grades I had to stay at after school pretty much all the time just to get help from the teachers because we couldn't help me in class and it didn't really help with my social life either way. Not every child wants to be challenged. Wohlfeil only before, ys! But the solution to that was not to take away the only thing I was good at and order to make me even more lonely that I had been. I went from being excited to go to school everyday to begging my parents to let me drop out so I can get my GED which Faye didn't let me do. The mom wants Juliet to stay in the public school, the dad wants to put Juliet into the gifted school, but there is absolutely no mention of what Juliette wants so I don't see how either of these parents are better than the other one. I mean it just imagine if Julia didn't want to go to the other school and she found out that pretty much the reason her parents are getting a divorce is because her parents disagreed on what to do with it at her dad wanted to take her to it again for her mom fed and now they're fighting and now they're getting divorced because Dad was going to put her into school she didn't even want to go to. My wife was in a similar position and made that demand to her supervisor. When he refused to make a decision she told him that he just had and here was her letter of resignation. Three years later she was at a higher level than her old supervisor.

Then what's stopping you from taking your kid to school?" Not to knock on stay at home moms, the have just as many responsibilities as their 9-5 counterparts, but OP is her own boss. Story 1: 'Juliet' might be that once-in-a-lifetime kind of genius. A visionary like Newton or Einstein. Possibly the future inventor of faster-than-light travel or the cure to cancer. Who knows? The best we can do is make sure that gifted kids (or kids in general*) are given the tools that they need to succeed. If they can push further then we shouldn't hold them back. Just imagine what we would've missed out on if Einstein for example never learned how to write. We would not have GPS! I'm so glad that that dad didn't let his local Karen hold his kid back. And to 'Juliet': go get 'em! I like to think we're all collectively cheering her on here. Asterisk: not all big names in the history of science started out as the stereotypical 'smartest kid in class'. Joseph Fraunhofer for example had a notoriously rocky school career, but ended up revolutionarizing the field of optics and discovered Fraunhofer lines, which are now a cornerstone of astrophysics.

My family was struggling financially when we moved out of the city. We had to move away from my old school and friends. I went to a new school in a small town and knew nobody there. I struggled with the teachers and the principal due to having an anxiety disorder. My first year was tolerable cause I had my older sister there with me who understood my disorder, but when she graduated that year I was on my own. I struggled through a year of teachers and the principal, and the students telling me I was faking and I became severely depressed. My parents did everything in their power to get me out of that school. They enrolled me in a school over an hour away and made it so I could live with my aunt and uncle during the week and come home on weekends. That's what parents are supposed to do. They're supposed to do everything in their power to help their children. That woman is a sorry excuse for a mom.

First story blows me away… like for real?! A gym membership and some maids? So she doesn’t work and she doesn’t keep a household. What DOES she do that makes a drive impossible? Wants to brag about having a gifted child (who just from the story, obviously got 100% of that from her dad) but won’t nurture it. Bravo to the Huss and in the story. “Oh, you don’t want to drive, cool. Just hired a driving service with the money we’ll save from you having to drive to the gym since you don’t like doing that.”

I feel like the only viable excuse for not driving a two year old for an extra hour is if you feel like that child wouldn't make it that far if they needed to go to the toilet along the way, but even that falls apart when there's this concept in basic human society called a 'pit stop'

When my kids were younger, I bought window crayons for them to entertain themselves in my car. They shared the package & each drew on the window next to their seat, and each had a cloth to wipe the window when they wanted to make new drawings. We drove hundreds of miles a week, and they did great. Starting when they were 3 & 5, I also played audiobooks, so they had something to keep their hands busy & something to keep their minds busy, and both foster creativity. I kept juiceboxes, cans of vienna sausages, and prepackages chicken salad with crackers, in case they got hungry. I never had problems with them being difficult in the car. The mom in the first story should do that, or come up with other ways to entertain their 2 year old. Edit: I wrote this before the update, nevermind, her not wanting to drive her kid to school has nothing to do with "dealing with a 2 year old in the car"

As someone that was in a gifted program, id say that it's not a bad thing for the first girl to grow up going to the same school as her siblings. What the parents really need to do is teach her that everyone around her is dumber than her so she doesn't get frustrated, then most importantly teach her to be humble about it. In my opinion, taking her away from the things that frustrate her won't help in the long run. I should clarify that I was in the gifted program of my public school in Ontario, Canada.

For story 1 I have the exact opposite. My mom demanded that her kids (I’m the oldest of four) go to the best schools we could feasibly reach and do extra activities to boost our chances for college. School drop off and pick up was no shorter than 3 hours a day and at most 4.5. If you lived in Atlanta we were on I-20, I-285, I-85, and I-75 every day. One year each kid was at a different school. And this was early 2000’s when gas hit record high levels. To this day I am grateful my mom and dad made those sacrifices!

"Unprofessional" look story: What I'm guess is that while OP works for a company with a relaxed dress code, her bf does not! He's probably being pressured to come to work related events where a plus one may not be required but may be expected and he's afraid to bring her without "upgrades", otherwise his job may be affected. 7:39 - Before hearing the rest of the story, here is what I'd do if I were OP. 1) Start looking for a new job, seems like she could get one somewhat easily. 2) Make 2 different documents in 2 copies, one being her termination letter from the company (she's not quitting), the other being a new contract with her new title, responsibilities and salary. Tell the boss that he HAS to sign one of the documents before the day is over.

Story 1: why can't the school just bump her up a grade or 2? She is clearly academically ready for it, and would probably do better socially with old kids. Age segregation in schools (and anywhere else really) is stupid, and can actually cause challenges with socializing in "real life" environments. Plus: "Gifted" students tend to excel young, burnout quickly, and struggle in adulthood because they are generally under large amounts of academic pressure.
