Thank you for updating us on all these brave people. Our church gathers and sends things every week. We pray for this war to end immediately. My mother lived in a 100 plus year brick farm house growing up. All the windows were painted white, and had black shutters. This was in the 1940's and early 1850's when she lived there. The house still stands, and is still painted like that, even with new owners. It looks so regal. I love to drive by it when I'm in the area. The first owners who built it, the second family that owned it, and my mother have all passed. However, the house still stands keeping the family that occupies it now safe and warm. I feel a connection to my mother when I drive past it. To me, this is what you are doing to this old farm house. You are fixing it up for yourselves, as well as future generations, and honoring past inhabitants . You too will become a part of this house's history and legacy. It's a gift to the future. A promise of hope and happiness. God bless you and your families.

Painting the windows white would be in keeping with original look restoration. There is white opaque stain that gives you the look of paint but when they become weathered over time you do not have to scrape or sand to recoat with white opaque stain. I use this method and it is very effective. The stain is not glossy but that does not affect the wear or the durability.
@ianbird4737
@ianbird4737 2 года назад
I agree that white opaque stain is a very good option, especially on wood that has been exposed to the weather which will have opened the grain slightly so the stain can really soak into the wood. This should last for many years.

I remember seeing Stasya and Anton's wedding on Twitter. Really unhappy to hear he was so badly injured. I may not have donated to your collection but I have been supporting the needs of the volunteers through other people doing similar things and sending money to World Central Kitchen who are doing an amazing job feeding people and animals. Slava Ukraini! Oh and white windows would be adorable and probably very authentic and correct for the region. Great work as always.

i would go with the same color you are planning to paint the door frames and shutters (if you are putting them on) It will look more cohesive and pleasing to the eyes. You are amazing in all you are doing, and how much you are helping the people back in the Ukraine. Sand the outside and let it rest, maybe oil it to bring back some life to the wood and let it soak in for awhile before you refinish them.

You have just asked about windows - why not take a photo of the front and use one of the photo apps and try out the options? - natural, dark and then white, see what you think, and you could also see what goes with the front door colour, especially as the house has that new roof.

Some of the mortar seemed a bit dry. It doesn't hurt to give the old bricks a quick dunk into a bucket of water before putting them up. The water will help wick up the cream out of the mortar and help it to stick. I saw you wet down the wall which was good. Just do the same for the old bricks you put in for best adhesion. Don't go overboard though. Too wet is just as bad. Just nice and damp is best.
@margoletta5873

Great advise! My bricklayer friend soaks all bricks in a bucket of water, old and new. Just before laying them. Otherwise the brick dries the mortar too fast (soaks the moisture out) he says.

we have the same windows in our 80's house. It takes a lot off time each year tot sand them down and get a new finish in them. I don't know the English word for the oil/paint but it's 'sappen' in Dutch. You get the natural wood color.

The hole might have been a "weeping hole". That would indicate a moisture issue and explain the rotten wood. The arch above the lintel may have been constructed after, in order to take pressure off of the lintel. The house seems to have a lot of secondary and tertiary construction for expansions/extensions and repair from war damage. Still, I love the work you are doing and congratulate you on your progress. You guys are the hardest working couple on RU-vid, BRAVO ZULU and keep up the great work.

It was crazy to watch you tear down old walls and buildings way back in the beginning, but now you have those materials to reuse and keep the house as original as possible. It looks so much better even when mixing it with newer materials and methods. Many historical places use a secondary interior window to raise the insulation properties. They usually have a stained glass exterior. Maybe you could do it backwards and have a stained glass interior to create a double pane window.

hello, i recommend you to buy a large construction syringe, the perfect tool for pressing mortar into tight spaces, such as framing lintels or steel door frames (in Germany I saw how they use it for fireproof doors so I did it in my house) in your case it would be perfect for refilling the mortar when replacing brick cavities, an hour of work with a trowel could be done in 15 minutes, including refilling the syringe.

Before painting them white think that in a few years you will have to paint them again: I know you are not afraid of hard work, but I would try to find a way to have less maintenance. Also, I would keep one of the original window frame: it could be use as a decorative element inside the house, maybe in what is now the barn attached to the house which you want to repair later and use as a living room. It would be a nice souvenir of what were the original window. If you do that, I would suggest choosing it now and protecting it from the elements. I like looking at your videos and I love the views of the large skies in this flat country!

My hunch is that if you rip cut the lintel in half and then orient the cross section of the lintel vertically then the strength of the resulting lintel may be half the strength of the original. If it is oriented horizontally, as you have done, then the strength will be much less than half the original. My guess is that the lintel you have installed is much inferior to the one you removed. You may wish to consult an engineer or the lintel manufacturer to determine whether what you have done is adequate. I greatly enjoy and appreciate your channel, all that you are doing, and the two of you as individuals and as a couple. Best wishes.
