Neon Indian recently used a phone line to announce his upcoming album that's due next month. It starts off sounding like an old phone sex hotline, but eventually you hear snippets from the album and a woman's voice announces the album title and the release date. Then it sends you a text message with a link to the newest single.

I seriously love the shit out of this channel, man. Your channel continues to be a really big inspiration for my songwriting whenever I'm feeling tired or out of it. Hell, I made a song about Alan Smithee as soon as I checked your guys's video on it. I'm only a fifteen year old musician that's relatively new to songwriting, so these videos really do help make a dent in my regularly banal songwriting. You guys treat fun facts with dignity compared to those mindless top ten videos littered everywhere, and I'm glad for that. Keep it up, man :D

The band Information Society had "songs" that were actually text files encoded as modem noises. One of the songs was "300bps N, 8, 1 (Terminal Mode or Ascii Download)"; play it into a modem set up per those instructions, and it outputs a short story about the band. Do the same with "White Roses 1.0 300 8-N-1", and it gives instructions for a scavenger hunt to find the actual song.

Both Stephen Colbert and John Oliver have used recordings over the phone recently for gags. John Oliver put up a number that you could call to contact his church, Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption. Stephen Colbert used a phone number in his week long RU-vid gag "Lunch With Stephen." I know it's not music, but I still think those were creative uses of phones in media.

Telharmonium! The first electronic instrument, used the transmitting power of the telephone to produce really clear, pure tones. As far as I know, never recorded though, and dismantled because when played it interfered with anything nearby meant to transmit communication signals, which included the telephone wires that were put in throughout New York City not long after the construction of his Mark II.

+Thom Eiser Would you know what might the equivalent technology of today? I am curious what the tones sounded like or if anything since can produce as clear a tone.. then again since it wasn't recorded who is to say how good the sound really was? But then imagining the same idea but with newer tech, I can't imagine anything synthetic being able to achieve the same sound as something so analog as a giant machine like this.

I've been watching this channel for a while and though I find the content super interesting, I really wish Talk Show Night at Juicebox Manor was still a thing. I was introduced to it by this channel, and if somehow elements of that (interviews and live videos of current bands) could be added to This Exists, I'd be super stoked. Probably not going to happen exactly as I imagine since the two shows are very different, but hey I can dream. I also wish Metz would play in my basement...

All I can really say is that this is one of my favorites on youtube because I like weird things that I never thought really did exist. I like all the episodes like the one you did with Rob Dyke I thought that was very interesting. For some reason I thought the one with experimenting on a microwave is completely awesome. well with cell phones today and the internet being on them, pretty much all media is being consumed through a phone now. in terms of traditional use, when my best friend moved up north to teach on a native community, sometimes when we called each other she would show me a song on the fiddle and i would play along over speaker phone. i don't know why, but that blew my mind that we were using pretty simple technology and we were playing music together over a vast distance and i could hear her in my room, almost like she was there.

My drummer and I used to practice live over the phone when he was in Colorado and I was in CA. It was a fairly complicated setup that required the use of two phone lines simultaneously and a little box from Radio Shack for recording phone conversations that we then each ran through a 4-track on our own end so we could hear each other through headphones. It worked OK unless there happened to be latency which varied from day to day.

I had this idea for a 1800 service called dial-a-solo. Basically every day, a chord structure is written and given to a house band, then if someone calls in, the house band will play this structure while an instrumentalist solos over it, providing shredding riffs for those on the go.

Just like to point out two addenda to this... Johnathan Coulton did a "Thing a week" series where he basically put out a new song every week. Considering his ties to geek culture being ever present in his songs, this period has been likened to the modern version of TMBG's phone line. Also, why no love for Callin' Oates? Not sure if it is still around, but there was a phone number to call that would let you listen to one of four Hall & Oates songs whenever you wanted.
