Today we're shooting some 3d printed cannonballs out of our revolutionary war style black powder cannon. All of the cannonballs are printed using PLA with 100% infill so they are completely solid. We've got airgun pellets, minie balls, and a few unique shapes to test out! Let's see how they do against a watermelon or if they even withstand the cannon in the first place!
If you have any 3D printed designs you'd like us to shoot out of the cannon send the files to us and we can make that happen!
If you have any ideas about things you'd like to see us shoot with the cannon or shoot out of the cannon leave them in a comment below and we will try to get those out for you guys!

2:37 What happened when the ball hit the wood is honestly more impressive than any exploding watermelon (although less flashy)

I 100% agree. I don't quite know what I was expecting from that ball other than it to hit the watermelon, but I was not expecting it to bury itself 2 inches in solid wood. I'm going to be shooting them into some ballistics gel one of these days too... Thanks for tuning in!

A suggestion for your aim with 3D printed projectiles: Put a laser pointer in the barrel after loading the gun to adjust the aim before firing. Maybe you'll hit more
@TheCannoneer

Way ahead of you on that one and we’re about to add a red dot to it as well! You can see the laser occasionally in some shots. We can hit a coke bottle at 50 yards with a normal cannonball haha. I hope the red dot will be the same!

@@TheCannoneer, I have a LOT of ideas for projectiles but what you can do to help you judge the efficiency of your designs is to put a big sheet of paper or bed sheet behind your target to see if your projectiles break apart during launching, have a consistent point of impact or can’t stabilize. Trust me it will help you refine your designs.

Yes, absolutely, aerodynamic designs are inherently more accurate. Though, like everything else in life, there's always a fine silver lining...like flat faced projectiles and most other things will travel reasonably well or accurately as a ballistic projectile if they're moving fast enough, heh. Probably build up something like a precision shooter's shot ledger and put up a poster-sized paper target with a point to aim [at] and develop some consistency with repetition of design and firing/aiming discipline. Build your own high speed camera if you can and record the shots as an after action report for post analysis. Probably record the building of the camera too and upload for the interested, hobbyists, et al., it'll need some more eyeballs. Keep consideration for title, description and keyword usage so you can net some more eyeballs from people of broader searches, kind of like getting sidewalk traffic with window marketing. Add in beginning, mid and end short in-picture animation for audience to like, comment and subscribe; and try to be active in comment(s) and with the build up [in] community and similar [topic] demographics, within reason, to develop your audience. Success is refinement of small things done well, consistently. Good luck, looking forward to future uploads.

Huh. Very interesting how the shots flew. Suggestion for weighting them down is print them in halves, before glueing in some lead fishing weights inside. Alternatively, you could also 3d print a sabot around a more dart like design. Another suggestion is to play around with the flutes on the spiraled shot, see how aggressively you can make the fins angle of attack before it knocks it off course

@GaisaSanktejo
@GaisaSanktejo 6 месяцев назад
This was fun to watch, though I would defer on what the rounds are doing without using proper slow motion equipment to capture what they're doing... The flat head diabolo shot (they aren't bb's) surprised me though... The main reason is simple enough, I use .177 and .22 round nosed diabolo's for pest control in my air rifles since the pointed ones tended to over penetrate when dealing with small game and I use the flat headed ones for target shooting. So long as there's no crosswind, they're VERY accurate
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer 6 месяцев назад
Thanks! I’ll have to redo this one of these days with a bigger target and see how accurate they are with a larger target. I can see one fly right over the watermelon on the slow motion so they might group well. I’ll get a good slow motion once the channel gets a bit bigger. Thanks for tuning in!
@GaisaSanktejo
@GaisaSanktejo 6 месяцев назад
@@TheCannoneer Cool :) Expanding on your bigger target idea; you could try repeated shots against a large sheet of card to see what kind of pattern they create or how they deviate from the standard heavy rounds (some will fly higher or lower depending on round shape, weight and load), it'll also offer a cheap way to confirm accuracy, though that would probably require your mounting your cannon on something more rigid and less likely to move with each shot. Come to think of it, this reminds me of how certain types and/or brands of ammo ALWAYS flew differently to the rest, most would stay on target, but two brands ALWAYS hit a foot to the left, I never figured out why...

cannons aren't known for their extreme accuracy though
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer 8 месяцев назад
Very true. We can reliably shoot glass beer bottles at about 30 yards or so so at an even closer range these things should have been super easy to aim. They are much much lighter than the normal lead cannonballs though.
@slowpokebr549
@slowpokebr549 7 месяцев назад
I'd have to see them grouped on paper to pronounce them inaccurate. The strung vertically but they were all different weights and designs.Otherwise the all looked to be right in line, windage wise.

Having shot a lot of lead airgun pellets, that diablo round really shouldn't give a damn if its pointed or not. The skirt does all the work of keeping it stable in flight. A flat point usually has better velocity and accuracy but sucky penetration. It just hit a higher point of aim than the pointed round did.
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer 7 месяцев назад
I’m working on making them in metal as well so I’m curious to see if they would be more or less accurate than the plastic version.
@slowpokebr549
@slowpokebr549 6 месяцев назад
@TheCannoneer they will seal the bore better but if you over load them they'll blow gasses past the skirt. Reduce your charges and work back up to max loads Or accuracy can be erratic
