Shooting Silverware From a Cannon 

Today we're shooting a stand in pirate ship hull with silverware out of our revolutionary war style black powder cannon. Our stand in pirate ship is made out of 2" thick solid red oak planks, which represents the standard ship hull of the time which was between 2"-5" in thickness and was made out of a softer wood, usually elm or ash. We're going to be replicating that famous Pirates of the Caribbean scene to see if it would have played out like the movie or if it's a a once in a million chance of them sticking into the hull. We've got a stand in pirate as well to further test how useful they really are! What kind of damage will silverware do? Will it stick? Let's find out!
A Bit of History: Pirate and merchant ships of the time didn't usually carry many cannons, if any at all, as they were designed to be fast and agile, utilizing hit and run tactics or fleeing, so heavy and expensive cannons were not standard fare on the average pirate or merchant ship of the day. Pirates were also trying to capture ships and the valuable cargo onboard intact, so small, light, and significantly cheaper anti-personal robinet cannons, swivel guns, and small deck guns, were the standard weapons, along with muskets, found on the majority of pirate and merchant ships for self defense against pirates or for use against the merchant ships. They would be shooting anything they could fit down the barrel and silverware was used according to the historical record, although it was not commonly used and was basically reserved for when they had run out of everything else to use.
