So bummed I lost the armband with tracker in CR when the waves were pumping. Something worth noting is the velcro on the armband wears down. That's how it came off my arm. It's expensive to replace too, roughly $250+.

Great review! I really appreciate the honest reporting of the successes and failures. It's actually re-inspired me to get it out there again. The Soloshot 3..... When it works, it's awesome! But I'm finding it sooooooooo unreliable. Currently, I'm really frustrated and disappointed. I've had my system since they first started shipping. I've had less than 50% success with the system, and yes, I update the software every single time before I take it out and I do the run on the beach. Most of the time it locks on while on the beach, seems to follow okay only to discover that 5minutes into my session, the camera stopped following. An awesome 1hr of scenic ocean with no one in the shot. I want to give it another chance, but its super frustrating to go through the setup on the beach only to have nothing to show for it. The vid has given me some inspiration.

Love how real you and the guys are with your experience and how you all overcame some troubles with the camera. I've been watching a lot of surf clips with the Soloshot 3 from other people since you first endorsed it, but half the shots were way off center or just plain bad and so I dismissed the product. However, after seeing your review Noel and tips, some curiosity has come back and I might reconsider purchasing a Soloshot. Having the reps to help certainly is a plus as well.

Frames per second is speed not resolution, a 30 fps is not necessarily going to be more grainy than a 60 fps video clip (unless we are talking about interlace vs non-interlaced but that's pretty old school). Resolution is what dictates image quality, 720 vs 1080 vs 4k (4k being highest resolution = highest quality). The advantage of shooting at a higher frame rate is that you can slow the footage down. Footage that is shot at 120 fps can be played back slower than footage shot at 30 fps. Needless to say I love your reviews!

Noel, your recommendation on the Firewire SEASIDE was SPOT ON!! Surfed it in small waves in Santa Cruz last week and "felt" like I was ripping it! LOVE the board - doesn't everything you described! THANK YOU! I know you said this Cam is buggy, but I'm going to go for it and keep in mind that 50% of the time it will be hit or miss. Been chatting with MIke from soloshot. Hey cool product review - I remember you recommending Apple Watch and I really like being able to contact my family in case of injury etc. One frustration I've had is that when you're in the water, the watch is basically unusable bc the screen doesn't respond when wet. Here's a cool thing I found - if you put on a screen protector (LK-Direct on Amazon - I have no affiliation with them) - the watch is touch useable in the water now! you just blow on it to get the big drops off the screen and your finger, and voila - the watch is touchable. Best 9 dollars I spent this year for sure. Try it! putting the protector on takes some patience.

I’ve got one used it 4 times. First 2 times worked perfectly. 3rd and 4th horrible. With the editing my son is my go to tech guy (haha). I have a pc. I use a ‘pc to phone’ airdrop style app to get footage on my phone then I can edit footage on my iPhone in iMovie app. Whenever and where ever I want. The review has got me keen to give it another try..

Excellent, honest review. How long of battery life per session do you get? Did you ever attach an external battery? If so, how big of an external battery mah and how long did it last with and without it?

2 very important questions if you don't mind? Is there an external mic hook up and does it turn off in direct sunlight/heat? I am struggling with my Sony Action Cam in 95 degree temps in the sun (Overheats and shuts off)

Hear of many people using these in the cold? I surf up north in Canada and would love to have one of these as I usually don’t have a surfing buddy yet alone a camera man. Surf temps down to -20 Celsius in prime season. So well below 32 F.

another great review Noel. What distance would you say that you had your camera from you for those clips and what do you think would be the farthest you would want to use this for surfing filming? Also, I noticed you had a folder on your computer that said Midas on it. Does that mean we get a review of that rob machado board next?

Hey Noel Did you have some one on the beach to make sure it doesn't get nicked? Also how's the tide range there? Our average tidal range is around 8.5 to 9 meters so if you had one near the shore line it would need to be moved quite a bit. Just wondering how people over come the security and tidal issues.

Does the tripod stand come with the solo shot camera as a package deal?

Hi Noel, Does it adjust zoom automatically when your out further or in closer do you know when you turn it off and press on that it's recording or paused from in the sensor switch? How far away will you be able to turn in on and off, same as the range of the camera? Someone might get a shark attack on film the way things are going here in oz.

Hey, has your opinion on the soloshot improved in the 3 years since? Or hear of any better alternatives? I was thinking about getting one but $1200 is a huge piece of change. Not to mention the discussion of poor customer service, already went through that with the Taro T1 tracking gimbal...

Want to buy but won’t since reading customer service sucks and problems people have with the unit. I hope one day other manufacturers make similar products.

Dose it record the whole time or can you stop and record from the armband

I found it interesting that the surfer states that you need to work out the kinks by using it multiple times! Even then there is a 50/50 chance of error both Camera and Human. Where as all this may be true. I've never been able to test the theory. I've not had the luxury of my Solo Shot 3 work for me more then a dozen times over the past 2 years. They had to replace the camera once due to not charging, note this was when they still had technical assistance that you could speak with a technician to problem solve. I have spent the past YEAR trying to get assistance with my Solo Shot to NO Avail. They take weeks and months at times to even respond to my email request for support and only then with a recorded statement of we will get back to you. I truly have questioned if Solo Shot is actually still in business. To not have a customer service for a technical product such as this is absolutely CRAZY and unprofessional. I love the concept and would Love to use the product consistently. 8 out of 10 i receive an error on my camera. The last one was "Can not Calibrate due to something obstructing the camera to spin". I ran in circles trying to read the screen as my camera spun in the attempt to calibrate. Clearly it was spinning with no problem. I removed the camera made sure all areas were clean etc. I continued to ask it to calibrate and after a dozen or so tries it did. It filmed good although the ZOOM was off. Then about 5 minutes before the end of my recording i looked up at my camera and it decided that i was someplace else. It then stopped and froze. This has happened to me now about 3 times. Honestly I ONLY want to speak to a technician on the phone when issues arise. Not emails while continuing to ask me to film examples to them and upload so they can review and get back to me. One tech literally told me that there was NO WAY i would be able to speak to a live person. They were incredibly understaffed and i'd have to continue to send emails for now until they got things under control. ???

When it's pointing down a filming the rocks, you tell everyone that you were in the barrel for at least 8 seconds and of course you made it. lol. Classic!

I just got mine. And having trouble getting it to track me. First session I was left of center and the tracking was really delayed. Today it just filmed the cliffs. What are the settings you use for the camera? What are the settings you use for the tracking?

I almost ready to pull the trigger to get it... is it worth it?

Can the Soloshot3 be controlled (zoom and still ) from the remote?

Lol, Noel, love your surfing bro but the old editing skills need some work. You should look to at least have Adobe Premiere Pro. With that programme your crop could track you as you go. Let's say the original started with you in the right of frame then finish in the very left. Rather than having a one crop fit the whole clip, you could have it track you as you... I'd also recommend you shoot 4k, that way it doesn't lose too much quality when you crop it.

Great Video, but I think SoloShot is out of business. There is no customer or technical support and they haven’t posted an update on their website or social media in a year. If you are considering buying this...DON’T. I waited 2 years to get a camera and a tag that didn’t work and there is no one to talk to get it resolved.

FYI everyone, Soloshot customer service this guy says helps his community is BS. I emailed him and never got a response back.

Damn Kinda disappointed. I've been waiting about 5 years to get a soloshot. Sad to hear there on the 3rd generation already and the technology isn't 100% there yet. I'm no Tony Starks w technology so I'm gonna wait till it's made idiot proof. Also I live in Costa rica so I'm screwed if anything breaks. Sorry but the more fps is not going to make the quality better

VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! We had issues with the camera not tracking properly. It filmed the ground, 30 yards to the right of the device, loses GPS constantly, just to name a few issues. We reached out for help and they took forever to respond. We ended up purchasing another camera system and sending this one back. Even getting the return information back from them has been a super hassle! We were finally told that Soloshot received the items and it could take up to 30 days to refund. It has now been over 60 days since they've told us they've received the product back. No refund, and no response. I caution anyone from buying this camera. There are better options in the same price range that I would go with...and did. Good luck to anyone who buys this camera. Hopefully you have better luck than us. AVOID THIS PRODUCT/COMPANY!!!
