The original Sonex legacy A-model is a low-wing design that seats two people and has a conventional tail with tricycle landing gear.
Sonex aircraft are some of the most affordable aircraft to build and fly in North America, with their entry model that cost between $30,000 and $50,000 finished.
The Model A model featured in this video was built in 2011 and it uses a Jabiru 3300 120 hp engine that propels the airplane to cruise 150 mph while only burning 4.5 gallons of fuel per hour. These airplanes are great entry level aircraft and also cheap to fly and operate. If you're the pilot looking to build time or just want access to an affordable aircraft to fly consistently. This is one you should take a hard look.

A lot of them run off pump gas too. Also when you're looking at used you can find a lot of barnstormers under 25k with relatively low hours.

The new B models have a 20 gal fuel tank a wider cockpit and electric flaps. All versions of the Sonex and Waiex are aerobatic to +6/-3 G. They are also available in taildragger models. The legacy A model is no longer sold by the factory. It can only be built from plans.

@@jordanduncan2136 I’m a ways off before I could even fly one of these. I plan to do aerobatic training but that will be with a school in their planes. But this plane is definitely a strong contender for a future build. But being a single seat is definitely something to consider. It would be a second plane anyway being a single seat.

I don't know the regulations in Zambia, but you can purchase a plane or rent one and have someone train you to fly it. It just takes time to learn but after that you can fly yourself.

This is a plane I was looking at way back when it was just a plans built plane. There are a few out there. But as time went on things changed and I didn't finish my training to get my pilots license. So the big question I have now is, is it to old to get your pilots license when your 65. I'm suddenly interested again now that I'm retired and have ample time to devote towards getting my license. Appreciate the video...

watch out for the SPA panther experimental aircraft. I paid those people for parts and a set of plans over 2 years ago and I have yet to receive all the drawings for the aircraft. They wait till after they have your money to tell you that "the frame is beyond the scope of the home builder" which is absolute nonsense, it's an experimental aircraft, the WHOLE thing is supposed to be within the scope of the home builder. Also note....there are MANY aircraft kits that require the builder to weld the frame together. to this day, the parts are untouched sitting in my shop, over 11 grand down the toilet.

If you're only burning 4.5gph with a max of 120hp available, you're probably throttled back to only 65% power. A more reasonable cruise would be at 75% power for over 6gph.

Short wings. The kit makers should start making single piece composite bodies instead. It must be possible to manufacture so fast and cheap yet be vastly superior to sheet and rivet. Something like fiber on a balloon and into a 2 piece mold and inflate it. Done. And as a tandem it should be smaller, lighter, cheaper, faster and have better fuel economy. And that simple it should be easy to certify instead of dreadful kit process.

@@hordi1ful that may be so but why would it be. fiberglass is certainly not expensive nor is cheap resin. And even using carbon fiber, that pays for itself in weight savings. When you can single piece form a fuselage, that just has to be vastly superior to the endless riveting nonsense of countless parts of sheet metal planes. And heinous rivet planes still use numerous composite parts because sheet is so form limiting. So why on earth would it be more expensive.
