Your videos are great! I'm learning a TON. Plan to use my 12 gal edge as a dwarf puffer tank...got excited when you mentioned that it would make a good tank for them!
Learning a lot about aquariums and fresh water plants by watching your videos. Seriously thinking about getting the Fluval Edge 6 gallon... thanks for the info!
Thanks for interesting reviews! I have a fluval Edge 46 litres and I sometimes let the waterfront be about 1-2 cm below the "roof". Of course it does not look as beautiful from the top but you can still see the fishes from above, just a bit "foggy" at some spots. To your concerns you can also add fishes with a high fin on top. they might get damaged if the water is all the way up. I was just thinking about whether to buy an Edge 23 l for a betta, but of course I would not keep the water to the top then. In my 46 l I have had ancistrus babies several times (bristlenose), they like it. I have two males and a female and they never fight. I also use a Eheim pick up filter in it.
By the way I absolutely love you videos your plants look amazing so do your fish I love all of the tanks, I love them so much and I wish one day I might have the same quantity and quality tanks they are just so amazing!!!!!
I have a Betta in the Fluval Edge 6g. I use a sponge filter in addition to the filter that came with the tank which greatly reduces the current. He was a bit confused at first, but he quickly realized where to get his oxygen from. He seems happy and seems to have got used to it. Maybe my Betta has a high IQ ;P
I know this is old but I've seen a few people take some black construction paper and cut it to fit around the top so the light is the only thing that can be seen. One of them had a betta and they used this method to teach him to go towards the center. (the pump was modified to flow a little slower for the betta)
Thanks for this useful information. I have ordered the Fluval Edge 12-Gallon. It is coming at the end of this week. Was planning to add a Betta fish into it but discovered here this is not a good option. Probably it will become a shrimp only tank.
This tank is fine for a male betta as long as you leave a few inches of space between the top of the tank and the water level to enable them to get sufficient oxygen, I have a betta, rasboras, cherry shrimp, African dwarf frogs and a loach in my edge and they're all perfectly happy :)
thank you for this video, I am actually looking for a bigger tank for my beta which I’ve had for two years now, and now I know this tank is not the right one!!! thank you!!
So... do you think it is ok for bettas?I want to buy it for my betta but i'm really not sure because of conflicting opinions... do you think that one solution could be not filling it to the brim?If you definitely think that this tank is ok, i'll buy it soon! :)
My Betta does great in my fluval edge but I have the wider more horizontal shaped 5 gallon version and I do leave a few centimeters at the top since it likes to go up to get oxygen. Another modification I'm about to do is to change out the filter it came with to a less powerful one since I have noticed the current is a little strong for him. What I do right now to remedy that is to position a floating lily pad with a suction cup so that its right under where the water falls. This seems to pretty much remedy that if you turn the filter all the way down. So in my experience, with a couple modifications you can totally keep a happy healthy Betta in there but I still think the wider horizontal one is better for a Betta than the taller vertically oriented one.
In my Fluvial Edge 6-gallon, I have one marbled veil angelfish, one (female) electric blue cichlid, and one young electric yellow cichlid... they are doing fine and loving life!
Hi man, just wanted to say thanks! Your videos have really helped me with my 46l edge. I'm new to this hobby and I'm hooked! I've planted mine with some ferns and have 6 Celestial Pearl Danios and 5 very small Chilli/Mosquito Rasboras. The CPDs are gorgeous and I really recommend them for this tank. They were very shy at first but the addition of Chilli Rasboras several weeks later seems to have given them some confidence. What do you think ref my stocking? Too much or OK? I'd love to squeeze in 5 green neon Rasboras or a few more CPDs but have decided that would be too much. Already thinking about getting a much bigger community tank. Thanks again, Paul
Your welcome. I love the Celestial Pearl Danios I cant get them here very often. Looks like your about full fish wise I wouldn't add anything else. My rummy nose tetras (not good for this tank) wouldn't come out of hiding till I got 9 of them then they swam all over.
The two most common causes of run away algae are natural light from a window hitting the tank and over feeding. In truth though there are many many reasons it can happen. This tank took about four months to calm down.
You'd be surprised how clever anatabid fish like bettas and gouramis can be. I swapped out my filter for one on which I could control the flow, and my two dwarf gouramis (the only inhabitants of my edge) have had no issues getting to the surface!
I took a filter sponge and just stuffed the outlet of my filter so it slows down the current so my Betta is not fighting the current to get air. It has been 6 months and he is doing great in his Edge tank.
Please answer is it possible to place aqua della waterfall inside fluval edge ? If so ,what size of fluval edge is needed? Or atleast could you suggest which aquarium or size is appropriate for aqua della waterfall ?
I would like to ask you what kind of plants can you keep with Fluval 46 l standard? I find that the plants struggling to get enough light with the standard lighting provided in the tank. Thanx in advance
Would you recommend Peacock Gudgeons in this tank? I'm new to indoor fishkeeping and I've taken to this species lol. How many could I put in this tank? Thanks so much if you answer!
Loving your vids! Curious...what is the tank to your right in this video? I was going to buy an Edge but after several of your videos, I think I might go with something like what is to your right. Please tell me what brand, size, etc. and any drawbacks you may have experienced with it. Thanks again and keep on tankin'. Terry
Got 5 Panda Corys and 10 Cherry shrimp in my planted 12 gallon. It took a couple days but the Corys learnt they need to aim for the spot in the middle if they want a gulp of air. Might add a few guppies and then we are done!
Great Vid! But I've kept bettas in my 6 gallon with no trouble at all, they sort of catch on that there is only one gap for air. Current stocking in my 6 gal are 3 female bettas and 2 ottos. Looking to stock some cherry shrimp for a bit of extra cleaning!
That's cool I have had several people say they do good with their bettas. Thanks for letting me know. I will do an update to this soon and bring it up.
Hey! Very informative videos! We just bought a 6 gallon fluval..but we are new to the aquarium stuff...can u pls pls tell us from the start how to place the live aquatic plants and which fish to prefer so that the tank needs least maintenance..HELP!
Advice - Simply reduce the water level by 1cm to allow a greater oxygen/water exchange and add a small pump to rear of tank to circulate more oxygen. Bettas and dwarf Guarani's are great - as they take air from the surface...ideal!
I found with my peppered corys that they would either feel around till they found the opening or failing that they would take from the many tiny air bubbles that tend to congregate on the glass ceiling of the tank, so while they certainly do not beeline for the opening they're certainly not going without oxygen in my 12g edge.
Hey pecktec I know this video was made almost 2 years ago but I was wondering what you would think about keeping snails in this tank. I am not looking to breed them but I am wondering if they will be able to climb into the filter area. I was thinking about a combo of 3 apple snails along with a few fish and maybe some small shrimp down the line.
i have kept a few otos in my 12gal edge not with the best luck, not filling it right to the top glass has led to more success though, unfortunately didnt learn this in time for the cories.
Heya , could you give me an idea on what heater to use in this . I have trawled the net and get plenty of "don't use fluval heaters, they don't last long" , Also a lot of "you need good waterflow over the heater " etc , but not getting any useful info on what exactly to use . I have Fluval edge 46 litre on order so will be getting it delivered in the next 2 or 3 days . Thanks a lot :)
Mr. Brett I am not sure if I have asked you this before but do you use any kind of Co2 or other additives or is everything with this tank stock? Do you use liquid fertilizers? I have two Fluval spec 2.5 gallons and one spec 5 gallon. I seem to have a lot of issues with algae which may just be something I have to deal with. My Edge has been running for about a day and doesn't have fish in it yet but I put one Amazon sword and dwarf hairgrass in it and I am hoping the hairgrass does well.
hey on my Fluval Edge I am running a Fluval 106 with 6 Mollies, but I have a problem with my tank and that is I get a lot of algae growth, how do you think I can stop this from happening apart from what you said in the video. Thank You
Yes!!! Dwarf puffers FTW! That's what I'm doing with mine 12g edge. How many would you suggest in this size tank? From what I've read 3-4 (with a 1-2 male-female ratio minimum)
buffntumble I have only ever had one in a tank. The ones I had didn't seem overly aggressive. But I wouldn't trust them too much not to chomp on each other. Every other fight in the world began with 2 guys and a girl they both wanted.
I thinking of adding 6 neon tetras in my fluval edge 6 gallon, there is no other fish beside 4 rcs shrimp and 5 nerite snails. I hav plants and driftwood can u tell me if this is a good idea
i have a fluval edge 6 gallon, right now i only have 3 fish, a blue cobra guppy, a dwarf puffer and a skunk corydoras, i am planning on adding a pair of otocinclus and another corydoras maybe some playmates for my guppy and puffer., i have plenty of live plants and hiding places in mine and i currently run an air pump that also so oxygen isnt a problem theoretically ,my fish seem very healthy and happy :)
Thanks for tips on that tank this is going to be my tank I'm getting the 12 gallon edge. I thought of two spec v one for me and my wife but she wants nothing to do with this and so I thought I would do one med size tank. I like to set it up just like you have with plants. I have had like 5 tanks when I was a kid and a 50 gallon salt water about 20 years. Boy did I spent some $$& on that it was a live reef tank But it look so cool. But now I'm married and life changing and wife so I'll keep it simple for now. Is the regular filter good enough to keep that tank clean ? I love the quality of tank. I'll probably get the same heater but had mix reviews like anything. Is it holding up in your tank ok. Is it a 50 watts. Is that ok ? Bill in San Diego
I know you do not recommend the Fluval Edge 6 Gallon for a Betta? I understand they are surface breathers and I know the main opening is likely too small for him to surface so I was wondering, how much surface space should I allow for him to breathe? Also, is there a way to reduce the flow rate so as not to knock my Betta around.
+Leslie Hill I have one in the 12 gallon. The flow hasn't been a problem for him. I resisted putting him in here for a long time but he is doing fine in there.
my gouramis found it easily because that is where the food was dropped. I have not tried corys but will definitely attempt it. I have trouble with my water staying clear. I currently have no fish in it now. any ideas?
Hi, first off great videos SO helpful and informative to a total newbie like me! I can see this tanks design has its short comings, but the dimensions and footprint is exactly what I'm after. I would really appreciate your advice on stocking it if thats ok? First off how would a small school of Glass bloodfin tetra do in it? If suitable how many would you recommend? If not any suggestions on an alternative? Lastly what would you recommend for a clean up crew (loving those bamboo shrimp!). Huge thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! 🐠
Andrew Morris Thanks man. I havnt kept the blood fins some Im not sure about that. I would shoot for a small shoal of smallish fish. I have white clouds now. I have had mixed results with the shrimp. So far the only ones that lived very long were the Amano shrimp.
pecktec Huge thanks for the reply😊 after a visit to the local aquatics centre the wife has agreed to a bigger tank (result!) Did see the fluval edge when I was there and really love the look of it, think I may do what you suggest and have a Dwarf Puffer tank when I get a little more experienced? Keep up the great vids, thanks mate 🐡
The lack of oxygen is from the small surface area of a fully filled edge. Not the lid where the perforated holes let plenty of air in. Unless you meant that you took the glass off the top? That would be pretty amazing.
Hello there and thanks for this video! It did gave a a lot of guidance! I am actually just got this tank about 5 days ago and it is still in set up process. I am hoping by Saturday to get some stock in and i would really appreciate if you can tell me whether to get 15 or 20 fish? Also, I really love gouramies but i dont want to get them and not being happy. What would you suggest me to get? I would like not aggressive fish but more calm swimmers etc. And last question: i have a betta in a different tank without a filter or a thermometer but he is ok shall i put him in the new one or leave him there? THANKS!!
I have a question, do you think that the Fluval Chi is good for a betta (or any fish) or does it come with many disadvantages? I have used a 32 l Jewel Vio for my betta but maybe the closed lid made algeas grow too fast. They don´t sell the Fluval Chi in Sweden (only spare parts) so you have to order it from Italy or England. Have you tried the Newa More 30 or 50 Aquarium? They also come in a reef version 30 R, 50 R?
I don’t personally like the chi. I don’t think it’s worth it. But I’ve also not owned it. I think for the money you would do better with a simpler system but I have no idea what is available there.
Thanks for the answer. In Sweden it´s more expensive with everything. An Edge costs mostly 200 Euro (about 2000 SEK). They have it on sales now for about 170 Euros. The Newa More 30 tropical costs over 200 Euro (28 l)
I notice a few people have commented that bettas are working out fine in this setup. I'm new to the whole hobby, and my vision for my tank was a betta tank. My original idea was to get a biorb, but the more I read the more that idea seemed almost, well not almost, laughable. I mean, they're cool looking, but really expensive and don't seem conducive to having fun with live plants. Fluvals are expensive, too, but I just like the look so much. Maybe it's too much work. I dunno. Anyway, I'd like to hear more about people's experience with bettas. The general consensus on the forums I read was 'Don't do it, bad idea!'and then I watch this video and there you all are, saying everything is fine. What do I do?!
People keep saying theirs are doing fine. Bettas are pretty versatile they don't need a lot of tank to flourish. I keep thinking about years down the road though and I don't know if an "old" Betta would do as well in there, but I haven't tried so I don't know. There are plenty of other choices.
Pektec Ive got one of these... Sorry I know its an old video and I really hope you read this because I think you would be best placed to help Im looking to replace the Fluval filter that came with the tank for either a sponge barrel and a small power head or better still a canister but I have no idea what small canister would best suit the tank. I like you keep mostly shrimp (3 Bamboo, 4 Amano and 3 giant fan for now) but Ive also added a Betta and 2 bristle nose to keep it clean (its planted) Any help pn what to look for with regards to flow rate would be great
+BladeRunner21577 the canister from the little tank I made for my sister a few weeks ago may work. But it sounds like your mixing fish with low and high flow needs. So the betta may need his own place.
OMG Pecktec spoke to me!!!!!!! Yes I think the giant fan need a higher flow rate but they will not be stopping in there as a 46l tank is to small, ill be setting up a 120 for then as soon as I can arrange the slate cliffs for it... before 6months are out they will be gone. Ill check out the video though. Thank you for taking the time, I appreciate it.
hey mr brett would you like to make a video of all you fish tanks in your home? like a tour? id like to see what kind of fantastic set ups you have! thanks -Tony Uveino
Please people, let's all agree the Betta Splendens is a BETTA, not a bayta. Beta was a Sony brand of video recorder that lost out to VHS. Happy tankin'.
6 gallon with 2 ghost shrimp, 2 sakura shrimp, one rubber nose, one blue electric ram, one hachet fish, and 2 American flag fish. and plenty of live plants
How many gouramis do you have in there? Im getting this tank and the google stocking forums have disappointed me so much :( all saying that its suitable for nothing because its tall and not long
Yet it's tempting...I'll just try for a week something. I've kept 3 discus in 20 gallon before...worked out well until i decided to add some harley queens without quarantine. New to this hobby...Keeps experimenting. Can't get the fency stuff where i live so mostly rely on my problem solving skills. Love your videos, started watching a month back...Nothing hyper...flows easy & quite fun to watch while chilling back in my room. Thanks for the quick reply...Can't wait to bug you more with more experimenting questions... ; )
I think i'll end up with couple of Neons & guppies... a Siamese algae Eater or two may be. perhaps a pair of paradise fish. The tank design seems like it'd make a stunning display tank. ; )
I just took this 12 gallon tank out of the box and found the glass cracked on the top. I am so disappointed. Even worse, dreading if I have to ship this thing back. My living room is covered with packing material.
I just bought this tank, I absolutely love it! However i'm getting a bit discouraged by many people saying "don't add this fish, and that fish won't work" So i've been doing alot of research and decided to try 4 Cardinal Tetras. I also have a Mystery Snail and an ADF Frog too. I dropped my water level down so that my frog can get enough surface area to grab air. My question is, is this tank more work than its worth? I'm a new tank owner and I don't want to get in over my head if this is too complex for someone new. I can still return it so I want to see what your thoughts are and if I should just invest in another tank. perhaps a 10-12gal. Let me know, Thank you!
I was considering getting the Fluval edge 12g because I saw a lot of people with it on Google and RU-vid with at least 2 clown fish in them. and I really wanted clown fish but I'm pretty sure it's too small of a tank for them and like you said oxygen can be difficult to get. but I wanted to know your impute on the matter because I was reading the comments on those tanks with clown fish but no one seems to be saying that it's bad to keep clown fish in it or anything, so if you could just shed some light on the matter for me that would be great thanks!
Hi, I had a betta in mine... it took him a while to find opening and really struggled with flow. I eventually took him back to my local pet store so that they can get better home for him
