I think her response was appropriate. My country is generally LGBTQ+ friendly but i can't support it in public or else my parents would drag my ass. You are not entitled to know kpop idols' personal beliefs but it's understandable if you're hesitant to support them if their beliefs go against yours.
for me i do not support it because it goes against my beliefs. Is this wrong? If a kpop idol would say out sth like that they'd most likely get cancelled...for having different beliefs. It's okay to have different morals as long as we don't hurt each other those kind of fans should apply this mindset on the kpop idols because it's actually none of their business.

Not trying to disagree here, I do think Rosé supports the gay community, but "carrying the flag" as proof of that makes me giggle. It's like the best example of performative activism. Literally any celebrity can carry a pride flag on stage and it says nothing about them. I think most people simply don't understand how limited these idols are. They really can't say or do anything without asking the record company. Singers in the West can just say whatever they want, sing about same-sex relationships, talk about Trump and the war in Ukraine, protest and rant on social media against things they don't like. K-pop idols aren't free to do that, which is sad and a lot of Westerners simply can't comprehend that. Most American singers are activists today, they go to a TV show to promote their new album and they'll be just talking about wars, climate change and "Oh, by the way, I have a new album coming out" Westerners don't really get Koreans adn a lot of young Koreans want their idols to be more like Americans, like Taylor Swift. To be honest I also wish that K-Pop idols would be more free just do and say what they want to. We had girl groups in the West like Spice Girls. They started the whole "girl power" feminist movement and were culturally very important. That's the one things that I miss in K-Pop, it's the cultural and social importance or any historic significance like a lot of Western girl groups had (Spice Girls, Destiny's Child, TLC, The Supremes, The Pointer Sisters etc)

Spice Girls were singing about stuff like losing virginity and were preaching safe-sex to kids (2 Become 1), lots of songs are about female empowerment, especially female sexual pleasure etc. They and bunch of other girl groups like Destiny's Child first started singing in gay bars, they were advocating for LGBT rights back in the 90's, when it wasn't that easy as today. Spice Girls especially did a lot of charities for HIV victims etc. Britney, Christina, Cher, Madonna, Miley, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry have been political since day one and were advocating for human rights and tolerance. There are literally thousands of University research and PhD Degrees about how Western music shaped the world and society of today. Google it. K-Pop simply doesn't have the ambition to be anything other than nice music, which is totally okay. But that's also why a lot of the Korean girl groups don't have any long-lasting effect on culture or society.
She will get an enormous backlash no matter how she answers a question like this. Idols aren't even allowed to talk about politics, their company literally prohibits them from making any controversial statements. She could have gotten scolded by the company or even worse if it had created a big scandal she could have even been fired. Like, no joke, things like this can ruin careers in seconds, especially for k-pop idols.
Cornering idols with dangerous/provocative questions is definitely a problem of boundaries that fans of kpop should address, 100%... it just irks me however when ppl reduce queer people's existence to an inherently political and ideological one-- especially when a lot of young queer fans just genuinely want to know if the idols they look up to see them as valid and human. No one fan is entitled to the response they want, of course, but at the same time I understand how queer fans might want to know if the person they're supporting is cool with who they are. Some of these fans definitely cross the line by asking outright and in an unpredictable environment with no time for the idol to even prepare to answer or not (that rosé video made me so uncomfortable fr) but to insinuate that it's crossing a line when queer folk jus wanna know who they're supporting is kind of a bad take idk. I also think part of it is the disconnect between cultures (in the east you have to be so fucking apolitical as an idol so you can have fans across the spectrum, who in turn are able to project on you as a "problem-free" blank slate; I think a lot of western fans don't really understand this and cross topical boundaries they didn't even know were critical to an idol's career in the first place). I'm not very active in the kpop fandom anymore (ie. I'm not on twt and I don't know how general fandom behavior/etiquette is rn) so maybe it's a wider issue that I'm just not privy to. But this vid came off a bit... mean-spirited? I dunno it just felt like a knee-jerk rant that was bordering on bashing a certain group, and not an actual conversation on why this keeps happening or why it's not right to do this. I think the majority of the issue here is a group of western fans, being ignorant (although not malicious) towards how idols' positions and apoliticism in the industry work, because although LGBTQ people aren't inherently political, for some reason it's still a hotly debated issue that breeds a lot of contention and definitely has political undertones. it's something that should be addressed and also learning which questions may be appropriate to ask celebrities you're parasocially attached to within an industry that has a specific ethos, but I agree that even the phrasing of the title comes off kinda bleh.

I'm a lesbian and I have two opinions on this. 1. I do agree that her answer was right and that it must be difficult for her to be open about this due to her immense popularity across the globe where many countries forbid gay rights. Hence, she made a smart choice by protecting her career like this. 2. I am however sad that this is an issue. Gay rights literally means rights that a person can love and marry the person they want and start a family. For me these are human rights and the question "do you support gay rights?" is equivalent to "do you support human rights?" The answer to this should be a no-brainer. I don't want to criticse anyone for protecting their career, but I'm criticising our society for it still being such an issue. There are countries where you get murdered just for loving the person you love and it saddens me so so much

Yeah! Inclusivity bias is a problem in this world, if you are either white, male or straight, your problems are ignored and people think it is alright. Regardless, behaviors should be called out regardless of our own colour, sexuality or gender. Even if my favourite group does not support what I support, it does not stop me from enjoying their music. I may not like their opinions but why should I care? I still like their music.

I totally agree with what is being said in the video. I find it unsettling that ppl think that it is necessary to ask if idols support the lgbtq+ community as if being gay or trans is something that needs support to exist oppose to being natural. One reason why Rosé and GIdle gets harassed by these comments is because people keep shipping them with their members and claiming that they are either bisexual or lesbian. Regarding the g(I-dle) clip where they are throwing pride flags. I find it very controversial how idols are afraid to speak on topics like the LGBT+ community because of their companies but put out songs that talk about being seduced by someone of the Same-sex (oh my God by idle). Rose is a thoughtful person…even though her fan base aren’t the brightest, I know that she is at the very least. K-pop idols are smart, and compared to a normal person, they are stronger in a emotionally, physically, and mentally standpoint. Asking irrelevant questions is imo just kind of dumb. K-pop fans are dumb, noting that most fans are teenagers, our brains aren’t fully developed. Who would ask a question during an event about sexuality when your freaking fav is in front of you. I believe that this person asking doesn’t really care about Blackpink, simply, the person just wanted to make something happen. If I was a blink or any fan…I would be peeing, screaming and fainting by just my fav being next to me! Like it’s literally in our face that this person doesn’t care about BP, cause if the person really loved BP the person would ask a question more interesting than a output or opinions about a controversial topic. I believe that idols have their own thinking of human rights. Meaning, they can freely depict what is human rights…it’s in their power and they can’t be stopped by basing their opinions of that certain topic. if the question was "are you gay?" then yes, it would be extremely invasive and disrespectful. however, i think the question "do you support gay rights?" is relatively innocent? gay rights are human rights, so the pretty obvious answer is "yes", regardless of any conflicting political/religious beliefs. it's not really a question about politics/religion, it's more a question of morality (ex: you can disagree with homosexuality while still believing gay people deserve basic human rights). also, i think it's fair for fans to want to know if the idol they are devoting so much time and money to is supportive of their identity, especially since kpop is notorious for exploiting the LGBTQ+ community through queerbaiting + fanservice for profit. that being said, if rose declined to answer the question, that would be totally valid and would not mean she's homophobic. kpop fans are not entitled to an idol's opinions, however, that doesn't mean they can't ask. nevertheless, i do agree that the way the question was presented put rose in a very awkward and uncomfortable position, and i understand why people would view it as an invasion of her privacy for that reason. i don't think asking if an idol supports the existence of gay people is the hyper-controversial topic that this video makes it out to be. and maybe it's just me, but i felt like a lot of the jokes in this video had an undercurrent of homophobia.

As much as LGBTQ+ rights are human rights 100%, LGBTQ rights are very much politicized as sad as it may be. Asking a public figure who has to stay apolitical for their career to work (look at idol culture generally for reference, this even happens in other countries and in spaces where idol culture is upheld like V-tubing), most likely isn't gonna work out and is gonna leave fans upset and the idol in a position where they literally can't answer. That's also why it's easier for veteran idols like Sunmi or ones with international fanbases as opposed to domestic ones to express outright support for minority groups/be political. Idols aren't the same as western celebrities, as much as you see variety in concept and appearance in the end it's the same as the AKB system where the tiniest thing that your clientele doesn't like can fully end your career. Using these situations as an excuse to be homophobic is lame as fuck but the point of "you need to be mindful of the relationships between you and your idols, what's appropriate to talk to them about when you have the chance, and the position they're in as public figures in a conservative country" holds true even if this dudes way of phrasing it was kinda iffy.

Why do people want these entertainers to become politicians without actually being politicians? They’re just here to dance and sing on stage. And instead of policing people, act yourself first. Be the activist yourself instead of checking if they are politically aligned with you. I wonder how the fans will react if any of these idols reveal that they’re conservative later on in their lives after they retire.
The last part is why they do these things. They dont want to be supporting and pouring all their love for someone they dont even know is a good person, so they try to force them into voicing their opinions on serious topics. It's marriage, adoption, right to show that in public (I'm Russian this is relevant), and if you expand to lgbt issues, then the minimum age to consent to transition, existence of a third gender, gender change in passports. That's a complex issue. There's many things to consider. I for one wouldnt have a clue what to answer, and I for sure support human rights, including the rights of queer people. As I said, I'm a lesbian myself, ofc I want the best for me and other people in the community! But there's a lot of issues which, especially nowadays, are tricky. And also, the word 'rights' is political itself, ofc it's political! It's about laws and rules. Your basic human rights, freedom of speech, freedom to express yourself, that's politics! Even feminism topic expands to right to abortion, equal pay, working or not working, being handled the custody etc. But still when we say we believe in feminism, we aren't saying it politically but morally. Lgbtq rights or female rights just mean treating these communities as equal and not discriminating them instead of other things you mentioned. So it's moral question not political question.

Not supporting lgbtq+ is common in asian countries (I'm south asian) and a huge population will crucify you if you speak up for gay rights. Also not supporting lgbtq due to religious reasons or societal reasons isn't always malicious/homophobic. As long as people are respectful and don't interfere in your personal life I think it's cool. I'm bisexual myself and I really don't mind if someone doesn't support it as long as they treat me with respect and don't tell me how to live my life.
I honestly think the person asking the question said it in a satire joking manner, it’s sort of a trend/common thing for the queer community to ask people those types of questions to see their reaction and if a question like that would offend or catch them off guard (WHICH IT SHOULDN’T, THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY IS EVERYWHERE)
I watched some of your videos and I found you are probably one of the more sensible ktuber out there. How you word the question “do you support xxx?” actually you asked her literally what is HER standpoint and it is indeed uncomfortable because whatever she answers, it would be taken wrongly by certain demography. It has been mentioned that the timing to ask the question was not right. I think one of good example to ask a question if you want to enquire whether they are supportive of LGBTQ+ is in Shuhua’s vlive when a fan asked what they should do if they like same gender. This brought the focus from their standpoint to us as a fan who wants encouragement. Of course it doesn’t guarantee that the idol might answer, but still, let’s be a more considerate fan.
With people saying that an idols opinions are none of our business I am really questioning on how they will react on idols openly being homophobic. They will get hate. I am totally ok if you dont support LGBT+ BUT if u are going to bully someone for who they are say shit like ewww gay people or eww ur gay? and similar stuff imma lose my shit. I haven’t yet watched the full video, but I don’t think asking idols “do you support my basic right to life and autonomy” is at all “forcing” anything on them. Especially in a country as homophobic as South Korea. Homophobia isn’t an opinion someone is entitled to have. It’s bigotry. I think queer kpop fans are justified in wanting to know if their idols are bigoted. Same thing as black kpop fans wanting to know if their idols are racist.

that's the thing. because of South Korea being "homopobic" this question can have severe concequences if ansewered rather with yes (in the korean society and the ones of other conservative countries in the world) or no (by lgbtq+ activists, people in the community,..etc.). Plus If Homophobia isn't an opinion then how do you define homophobia? If not supporting the lgbtq+ plus community doesn't make me homophobic then it's fine i agree. But i think ppl would most likely view me as homophobic if i said i don't support the lgbtq+ community. Because the actions of the lgbtq+ people go against my believes, supporting the community would mean i am contributing to normalizing these actions, but i wouldn't do that when the actions go against my believes. Now ofcourse everyone deserves human rights and so do lgbtq+ people, not supporting the community doesn't mean I want no rights guaranteed for them or see them any less human than others. In fact i wouldn't even consider those actions to be identifying the person, to me they're just humans like everyone, other individuals with different morals whom i respect and expect to respect me, too. That's why i don't view it as the same as being racist. Racist people treat people differently based on their looks and origin, and that's just stupid because those don't define the human being and the person does not choose the looks and origin when born, it is wrong to blame a person for something they can not change or have responsibility in. Now the argument with a lot of lgbtq+ ppl is that they are also born with it and have no choice but that isn't facts. That's how they view it and others view it differently. When a baby is born you will know its race but can you know its sexuality and gender identity? I don't think so cuz things like that develop with time as the person along with their believes and attitude develops. Now closing off the topic of homophobia being set equal with racism, coming to the topic to this video, it can be referred to the political statement of the idols in general. There will always be topics where people don't agree on one thing and those idols are in an industry where they shall stay neutral to not cause any conflicts or lose on fandom, so asking this kind of questions and expecting them to answer can harm them. And generally one does not have to support any community to be considered an "unproblematic" person. Supporting certain communities is a sort of activism and a political engagement. One can always stay politically neutral, that doesn't make him a threat to any community. Do i have to support the black lives matter community to be considered not racist? I'm not forcingly a racist person if i don't support the community for not spending time on being engaged in those political movements such as protesting. Now ofcourse that's not what one expects when asking those questions, but i think we should care on how we word it. "Do you hate black/ gay/... people?" could be a way of asking then it would be so simple to simply say "no" "ofc not" because why should we despite human beings. I do not support the lgbtq+ community, but that doesn't make me hate the people in that community.

It's so sad the way some kpop stans function; this is basic human decency and the fact that so many kpop stans just don't know it is beyond upsetting. It reminds me of some fan call semi-recently where fans kept asking Dreamcatcher's Yoohyeon about her sexuality, despite her trying to write it off and clearly getting uncomfortable. Yoohyeon has said things before that could be seen as an implicit way of stating that she's queer, but it's obviously never been made explicit since this can cost an idol their career and their safety. So then when you're in a FAN CALL, and you're supposed to be their fan and you KNOW that idols aren't allowed to be queer in this industry, why the fuck are you asking them about this? Why are you choosing to hurt someone you claim to be a fan of in this way? Because you want a satisfying answer, 'cause you're curious? Does your satisfaction matter more to you than Yoohyeon's career and her everyday safety? And just like with Rosé, it's not like there's a right response. If Yoohyeon says 'yes', her career is over. If she says no; either that means she's straight and delusional fans will be dissapointed; or it means she's queer and you've just forced her to lie about her identity AND disappoint a fandom. And even then, queer identity (and opinions on the queer community) is something so highly personal and complicated, sometimes people don't even know these things about themselves, and these sorts of questions can rarely be answered with a simple "yes" or "no" and it's fucking ridiculous to even think to say something like this. I just wanna say that this person is Indonesian a country where homophobia is still the norm, there's a high chance that they posted this knowing they'll enable homophobic acts. The fact that they haven't done anything to prevent the subtle homophobia in this comment section is saying a lot.
I do think that this wasn't EVEN CLOSE to the worst question that she could've been asked, and I think some people do have the right to at least ask someone's opinion on a matter that isn't that polarizing- because at the end of the day; fans get to choose who they support and if their idol doesn't have the same beliefs as them or show support to a whole community that loves & basically gives them their income (especially on a human rights matter like the LGBTQIA+ Community) it can be very disappointing. I do understand that it truly isn't none of our business as long as they aren't being outwardly hateful, but it just bothers me; because I feel like the same people that say it isn't any of our business, are also THE FIRST ONES to start attacking them if and when they eventually do say something actually offensive, so its like “Oh so NOW their viewpoint on this issue matters?” I don't think that Rosé deserved any of the hate, she answered in the affirmative to the best of her abilities while having to think about being under a contract that prohibits her from acting in certain ways and also the fact that Korea is a very conservative country regarding LGBT issues. But that's the important part, she's already shown her viewpoint on the matter, while so many other celebrities [not just idols] don't. I know that some people {mainly straight people} won't understand the importance of the celebrity you support respecting your existence as a human being, but for queer individuals it is a LIFE LONG battle. Imagine that your favorite celebrity doesn't even believe that you should exist or that there's something wrong with you in secret while you keep supporting them and they don't suffer any consequences for it. Even though they are commonly grouped together, things like politics aren't in the same spectrum as LGBT people, it's not important to know who someone votes for in the elections; it is important to know if somebody believes in Human Rights FOR ALL. This world and the fame industry are just so fucked up, y'all 😔😕😢😤🥺 TL; DR : Celebrities should show support to ALL of their fans to avoid situations like this one...

Did you watch the video? They literally discussed the whole reason. It’s controversial because there are multiple opinions on the topic that could cause rosè her reputation. If she said that she supports it, yes the lgbtq+ community would be proud, but also the people who don’t support it can attack her for it. They may be in the wrong but that’s probably what would’ve happened. Even asking the question to a person out of no where, can be a controversial topic.
