Yes, this keeps coming to my mind. I know NY and California have strict laws when it comes to children in the entertainment industry. I don't see how the courts haven't used these laws against the family vloggers living in those states or increased the scope of the laws to cover modern day activities.

Ugh. As an adult with a disability (epilepsy), I absolutely cannot imagine if my family filmed me having a seizure and tried to capitalize on it. (And they would never think to do so, even though I could consent when not having a seizure.) There's no reason they can't give advice to other parents without using her. Education is hard enough as is.

I used to love them. I started watching before the potty video blew up, they won the Shorty award, and moved into big house with "all the things." Once they won the Shorty away "fame" majorly started going to their head. Then there was a huge shift when they bought the house. I lost what little respect I had for them when the stuff about Asa's oldest daughter came out and his woah is me video about that, when it was uncovered that lots of stuff was put in Priscilla's name, now all made sence. Plus the fact both of them are calling the other mother "money hungry." NO. They are the money hungry people with the cash cow that they don't want this other daughter, who is no fault of her own alive, to mess with THEIR money.

... Asa loves his child... If he can completely abandon his other children, especially one born from his infidelity, it says a lot about his relationship with Abby. She makes him money. And when moving to another place with a "special needs " child, wouldn't you try to make her surroundings as familiar as possible? And why did they not keep the sensory room? It's so beneficial for her? this is crazy!

I have followed Fathering Autism and I agree with some of the comments below. Things drastically changed when they moved into the new home. It became less about Abby and more about house renovations, trips, buying things. It’s clear that Abby can learn sign language but why the limited modified language Why not teach her more signs. Why not spend money on more therapy for Abby. It sort of reminds me of Jim and Tammy Faye Baker At first it was about their message and then it was about extravagance!!!

I've heard a lot of examples of her exploitation but I have yet to hear people talk about the risk this notoriety could potentially bring her (Abigail). Her parents are basically telling hundreds of thousands of potential perverts that their teenage daughter has severe intellectual disabilities and is nonverbal. They tell what town they live in, and what school she goes to, and they even show the vehicles and go carts they ride in. I think it's scary that they share all this information about a teenager who is at a greater risk than most teenage girls that age. It is supposed to be Asa and Priscilla's job to protect Abby, yet they are telling countless strangers very important details that potentially put Abby in a dangerous situation since she has no idea that there may be bad people out there who know she is intellectually disadvantaged, making her an easier target for sick people out in the world. I wish this world wasn't that way, but unfortunately it is.

I tried to shut them down as “they are raising awareness!” But now that you put this out there I regress. My boys were correct. It’s very sad. I’m bummed their life turned into $$$$ and not their daughter. Again, I don’t know them, I can’t judge but things changed. I dont EVER post pictures of my boys without their permission. Here’s the worst part about the MLM - if their videos are REALLY trying to reach and help other ASD parents then aren’t they also targeting these parents that are often under extreme stress, both emotionally and financially? In my opinion, it’s worse than the MLM mommy vloggers that are targeting parents of neurotypical children.

Alexis Andrus Yes this! Many people have pointed out that what Priscilla is doing is actually *far worse* than a regular MLM scammer, because she's using her daughter to get her sales and using pictures of her on the MLM page and worst of all, targeting *other* disabled people and/or their caregivers and parents, knowing full well that they are the most vulnerable and less financially fortunate 💔 (Tattle Life has some good commentary on this :) )

Their journey began with good intentions. It was meant to share Abbie's story, the good and the bad shown with truth and sincerity. All of it was aimed at helping other families. This family would not have the recognition they now have or any of the material items without Abbie. Not one of them is interesting enough to have found success on their own. They owe every penny they have earned since they began monetizing their channels to Abbie, for without her, no one would care who they are. They know that and they will ride this meal ticket as long as they can. Fast forward a few years and their vlogs are no longer about Abbie or how to help or guide families struggling with a diagnosis of severe Autism. In Abbie's case, she has both severe Intellectual Developmental Delay and Autism. Huge difference from a person who only has Autism. Yet, they focus mainly on Autism, and only touch on the IDD once in a while, which is not being transparent nor truthful to their followers who truly look to them for advice on Autistic matters. All the facts about Abbie are obvious if one actually has watched each vlog, from the very first one to the present day. The earlier vlogs were more honest and truthful about her abilities and lack of. Start with their first vlog, turn on the closed caption, get some popcorn because watching them all will take a long time, and pay attention. If you have watched ALL of their vlogs from the start then you are well aware of the following; Mentally Abbie is a two-year-old at best, a toddler. With toddler behaviors, thoughts, and wants. Chronologically and physically Abbie's body is that of a 15-year-old. Abbie will forever be a toddler mentally, yet her body will continue to grow and change. Think about that for a moment. Abbie is NOT a typical teenager, nor will she ever be a typical adult, or typical middle-aged or elderly person. Abbie is NOT potty trained and will more than likely forever wear diapers. Abbie will NEVER be independent or able to do anything on her own without supervision or prompting. Abbie does not have the cognisant understanding to navigate alone in her own yard safely, let alone in this world. Abbie will never go to college. Abbie will never have a paying job that she could independently do on her own. Abbie will never get married or have children. Abbie has never spoken a word. She makes sounds and noises, however, she has never said a word or sentence. That has been stated numerous times by Asa himself. ALL of this is OK, as this is who Abbie is. What is NOT OK is her family portraying her as anything other than who she is. Abbie should never be spoken about or portrayed as a "typical teen", she is not. A typical teen is what her family so desperately wants her to be seen as. It is deceitful to the followers and MOST IMPORTANTLY, unfair to Abbie to portray her as something she is not. Look beyond the numerous platforms this family provides. Do a few google searches of names and throw in words like "other daughter" or "arrests" and you will uncover more legal docs and information than you might be prepared to accept about this family. I honestly could care less about his affair, but the way he hid from being found for so long when he knew he had a first daughter (who was born years before Abbie) to support, is telling. We all make mistakes, (his affair) but living in a half a million-dollar home while behind on child support (all documented time-wise if you look for it) and living their best lives on camera speaks volumes about Asa and Priscilla. That was the moment for me. Signed, a former follower of this family, who finally took off the rose-colored glasses in March of 2020.

One of their “fans” at the beginning said it all; “this is their fill time job,” so does the “fan” not realize Asa will do anything to keep the $ coming in? Also, if the parents do not work, how do they have medical insurance? Are they both on Medicaid which is funded by tax payer dollars? And they probably get month payments from Medicare as Abby is on disability.
@TheRubinre

I live in Florida. The state provides everything as long as it's endorsed by Dr.'s, therapists, etc. Also Asa sued the public school district in Jacksonville. The school district lost & most likely has to provide for her current school costs. I doubt the school gave them $$. IDK about their personal health insurance, but on several videos they state they had to pay cash for procedures. Like when Priscilla had dental work done. Some gossip suggests she even paid $15,000 for her weight loss surgery.

The problem with Fathering Autism fans is that a lot of them are very vulnerable - they may have autism or special needs themselves, are poorly educated, lonely, have mental health issues or are desperate mothers looking for support. Some of them latch onto Fathering Autism as a way to feel like they belong or are a part of the family. Asa and Priscilla know this and are very savvy business people- they not only exploit Abbie but exploit the vulnerability of their fans. When you point out the truth, the fans become VERY defensive out of fear that their "family" support is about to be taken away. They just can't accept the truth - it's a defense mechanism called cognitive dissonance.

You don't "train" a child. You "reinforce" good behavior. And you do that will words, with play (ten minutes of uninterrupted play - whatever the child wants), with an art project. NEVER with food. That creates an addiction, especially if the food is sugary. It also creates this association that food needs to be earned. And in the future, if she regresses to the point that she doesn't "earn" the food, that will cause food insecurity, which may also lead to EDs. Guys, School House Rock did a video on this in the 80s! Get with it XD
@dscrerar1111
@dscrerar1111 3 года назад
I don't think food should be used as s reinforcer. I do think Abbie should be able to have food when she is hungry. They can offer a balance of snacks. She is not on a diet. I think any teen-ager gets hunger pangs and it's sick that they withhold food outside of meals. It's the parents who are overweight not Abbie.

I wanted to mention a few things with you. I mentioned previously I am an Autism mom. In the state I live in (not Canada) SSI is based on parents income and assets and acts as a supplement to the parents income. I am not sure if this is different depending upon the severity of the child's disability or needs. In my situation , as I got on my feet and made more money the amount of SSI I received decreased until I did not qualify anymore. I am also a Special Ed PreK Teacher which means I am a Mandated Reporter. This family walks a fine line however, it appears Abbie's needs are being meet, she is safe, and receives support in multiple areas. I think if a teacher or therapist reported the family it would not go far because Abbie is not in physical harm and lives in a safe environment. I think her parents create excuses for themselves to justify the exploitation of their daughter to make them feel better about what they do. Abbie's face does not need to ever be on screen for them to be amazing advocates! They are taking advantage of her because she can not voice her beliefs. This hurts my heart knowing this is happening to Abbie and so may other HUMANS! Thank you for speaking out!!!!!!!

I am a mandatory reporter in Texas. I agree that this exploitation. However, having worked in public education and having been a foster parent, I do not believe this falls under “reportable”. I also do not think that action would be taken by CPS. In my experience, the only thing CPS will respond to is physical abuse, extreme verbal abuse, sexual abuse or extreme neglect. My daughter Stims more when she's over stimulated OR excited. Its VERY easy to tell the difference between the two. Example: when my daughter is excited she will stand on her tippy toes, flap her arms, shakes her hair/head to feel her hair on her face. When she's stressed or over stimulated she will grab her arms, aggressively rubs her eyes, rocks, throws her head back. But alot of Abbies Seem stress related to me. @@MyLittleHomeSchooling honestly anything under 3 will be a "wait and see" diagnosis. Our first sign was our daughter speech was very delayed at 2 (maybe 5 words she knew) we got speech therapy then while she was in speech her SLP noticed some things off with her like eye contact, attention, some of her behaviors so she got referred to at OT. and now she sees SLP and OT. They recommended we see a development pediatrician and he told us our daughter meets 3 of the main markers for Autism but shes doesn't quite meet the secondary (i think she's missing 2?) He told us she could and he wants us back in Feb for another diagnosis. For girls I am seeing its alot harder. But she is my first and after learning more about autism at younger ages especially girls. I learned she had alot of signs but I didn't know what they were or that they were not normal. Like she started walking at 11 months then stopped and didn't walk again until 16ish months, she would gag on any food with texture, she wouldn't look at you if you called her name (she still doesn't do this) I could go on but these are really the main ones I learned. She is in early intervention preschool, speech, OT. They are talking about PT maybe soon because of how she holds things and sits. I work with her daily and we have a dope play/sensory room for her. My daughter also screeches and covers her ears when we are in the store and people come over the intercom, she hates that sound and when people are on speaker phone. Your daughter might just have sensory irritants but truthfully it's so hard to tell that young because like babbling is normal at 2. And hiding(being shy) is also quiet normal too.

This entire series you've done has been so eye opening for me! I found FA thru another yt channel that I totally respect who is friends with them, but has a verbal autistic daughter. The one thing I've noticed different between Lauren's Channel and FA is that 1. Lauren's little girl is verbal and can communicate when she does or doesn't want to be filmed. If she's having a "hard day" they don't show her. They will even say "she's just having a hard time so she doesn't wanna be on camera". They also ask her if she wants to be on and say hey--and sometimes she is excited and wants to get the camera and talk to everyone. Sometimes she doesn't. 90% of Lauren's content has nothing to do with their daughter or her autism---she started out as a keto channel. She does still family vlog and she's about to give birth and we are all super excited to see their new little baby, but it's just SUCH a different vibe with Lauren compared to FA. Abby, while she can communicate somewhat on a tablet, has ZERO ability to understand what she's "consenting to". Everyone wants to say she can tell them no on her tablet, etc, but she doesn't have the understanding of a teenager to actually consent. She has the mental capability and understanding of a 4-5 year old (if that). I was a real FA stan in the beginning. I learned almost everything I "know" about Autism thru watching them and other autism family channels, but this podcast series has really opened my eyes to the exploitation of Abby and it makes me really sad! I can def see a regression in her knowledge and communication since they moved and they've become "more famous". She is most def not the #1 priority of their family anymore----and I've ALWAYS found it so odd that Priscilla seems so disgusted & frustrated with Abby all the time! I mean, I know i"d surely be exhausted and tired too--but that's still your child and any true mother who can muster up the energy to film a cooking show can certainly muster the energy to play with her child.

I know this will be long but hear me out...Yes they may buy things "she can Enjoy", but Abbie has the mental capacity of a small child and can not verbally communicate those feelings, so who's to say she does enjoy these things? They're luxuries, not needs and using Abbie to make the money to buy them is where it's wrong... All the shit they're buying and money they're spending could be spent on building Abbie her own damn house that's specifically made for her, with 24/7 care so she CAN eventually live on her own with paid help there to help her do so and give her some sort of independence.... That's Abbie's money, and they're not only exploiting their child for said money, they're exploiting the fact that she doesn't understand and never will be able to understand that she is entitled to part, if not most of that money. What happens when Abbie is an adult and the well has run dry?! She can't go and sue her parents because she can't understand what is happening around her and that's not fair to her. Sorry but to me this is worse than just exploiting a child without a disability because at least that child can see the camera in their face and will one day understand what happened along with the ramifications of this lifestyle and will hopefully be able to do something about it, if they feel they want to... Abbie will NEVER be able to ulunderstand how she was taken advantage of and why she was forced to show how to use the bathroom and other things that must be very confusing for her, especially with having sensory issues and being pushed and pulled in CONSTANTLY like a rag doll ALL for content... They're exploiting a child who will NEVER be able to give consent and all they're doing is confusing her especially when they have her sit on a closed toilet when A. She doesn't need to go and B. When that's not how she's supposed to do it, any change in an autistic person's routine can be detrimental and cause added stress so let's force her to sit on a closed toilet with her pants on after she learned how to use the bathroom in a COMPLETELY different way, like that isn't confusing the hell out of her?! A child without any of these issues can differentiate between "oh we're only doing this to show other people how" and "oh so THIS is how I'm actually supposed to be doing it?!" abbie CAN NOT, and when she's being used as an example for content I'm sure it gets very difficult when how she normally does things, is being done completely differently for the content, no wonder that sweet girl has regressed and is doing WORSE and that IS the parents fault. Consistency and routine is very important to someone like Abbie and using her as "an assistant" is hurting HER more than it's helping others!

About Abbie not being able to understand what's happening - I think she understands more than they give her credit for, but there's a caveat. You see, one of the autistic people I follow online is verbal and also completely unable to understand loaded language (and as such she cannot be sure she won't vote for a politician she disagrees with because the language fools her more than it would a person without that specific language impairment). If Abbie has a similar language issue, even if the rest of her language understanding is completely normal, that could completely tank her ability to sue even with an advocate because she might not be able to grasp the nuances of the legalese even the lawyer would tell her and translate for her, even if she can understand most statements in plain English and some technical terms (as the woman I am referring to does).

I also have a diagnosis of autism and I stim when I am feeling stressed, the repetitive movement is relaxing, if she is constantly stimming then my guess is she is feeling uncomfortable being on camera. I make videos about my autism now as an adult and I am in control of the content but I can't think of anything worse than my parents exploiting my developmental differences and making money from making my private life public.

@tonksloopy
@tonksloopy 3 года назад
Stimming can let you know what the person may be feeling depending on the situation. It can be a frustrated, happy, tired, sad stim and it all depends on the individual. It's all about knowing the person and paying attention and UNDERSTANDING that all of their behavior is communication. I do not know much about Abby but the blatant Ableism and infantilization pisses me off. Just because she's non-verbal and has an alleged IDD does NOT mean that she has no age appropriate thoughts or feelings whatsoever. I do not view Abby's behavior and lack of communication as regression. She has just not been given the chance to be HERSELF. Her environment is not letting her show everyone what she feels because nobody seems to actually SEE her. Also, one reason why her vocabulary may not be expanding is because they may be doing ABA based therapy. Which, if anyone listens to the Autistic community, will learn that it is compliance based training and abuse. It has been shown to cause ptsd in the long run. You have to change the environment to the individual, not the individual to the environment.

I used to watch this channel and I do feel like I gained some insights into autism that I value, and I loved seeing A's personality and unique experience. I was a subscriber and looked upon them with admiration. When I started to see the MLM stuff, that rubbed me the wrong way, but I didn't think negatively beyond that. Thank you for your perspective in these two videos about them. It really made me see the exploitation in a clear way that can't be denied. I do think that their channel was probably started with positive intentions, but it's been highlighted to me here that they have always sailed by the fundamentally crucial issues of consent and dignity, and have morphed into something that is wrong overall because of the lack of consent and in the details is questionable on many fronts. Thank you for raising these red flags, and for helping me question myself about what I was watching and why. I've unsubscribed.

As a teacher, I think I may know how Abby gets her school services. I don’t know about the respite care and such, but when I used to watch the channel I picked up on how they get Abby at the very special, and I am assuming, expensive school. Children with special needs have IEPs. These are individual education plans. These are federally mandated and anything that is decided is best for the child must be provided by the school system. They have said that they fought the school system, and I’m guessing that they fought to have the fact that the best educational placement for her would be this school. If they can get that in the IEP, the school system would pay for the schooling, not them, not the money made off of Abby. I would be interested in what else they are being provided by outside sources and what special services they actually pay for. I am not implying that every child like Abby should not get the best services, but if you make millions of dollars the financial obligations should to some degree fall to the parents.

You can Google all about their lawsuit. Its sad. They said Abbie wasnt progressing because the public school wasnt following her IEP. And all these years later, at JSA, nothing has changed. Its certainly a safer environment for Abbie than public school, but the state is paying about 20k a year for what amounts to daycare.
@nickishairmetal4408

@@mothermarie6057 I never said she didnt deserve schooling. Is a 40k school for autism the best fit for someone clearly so IDD they still cannot dress themselves? Probably not. The Maass only focus on Autism therapy. Who knows, she could thrive in an environment structured around her intellectual disability, but that doesnt make Asa money. Hey Josh, love your content. I’m a SPED teacher and former early interventionist with focus on children with autism. To answer to your question about stimming...for children on the spectrum it can be done for a variety of reasons but most commonly it is a way to deal with sensory overload, adapting to a new or unfamiliar situation, or to help reduce some frustration or anxiety. Sometimes it is a coping mechanism for boredom or even to temper excitement. I have a daughter with high functioning autism that will also sometimes stim when she feels happy, but most often it’s in response to boredom or stress. Hope this helps, and keep fighting for these kids.
