To a solid light color preferably white for better visibility for the watcher. Take a look at the Orvis videos with Tim Flagger and Tom Rosenberg. Good luck.
Butt-Monkey additions to Loathsome Characters Wiki: Todd (Wayside): Arguably one of the best examples of a butt-monkey, he was constantly tormented and tortured in a nice but not strict way by Mrs. Jewels and Marchenia since he first transferred to Wayside School in Wayside: The Movie by having his name written on the discipline list by Mrs. Jewels and sent home on the kindergarten bus almost every day just because he couldn’t adjust to and failed to follow Mrs. Jewel’s class’s odd set of rules for her class and got himself in trouble without realizing with “Age of the Aquarium”, “Kindergarten King” and “The Note” being the best examples of Todd torture episodes.
Love this fly. I’m thinking about downsizing the eyes to see if it still kicks but dog legs more neutral on the stall. What kind of barbell eyes does the pattern call for and what size? Thanks
It is a good thing you like all that "wispy stuff" near the head, because the hackle you chose was too short for this fly. Also, it is a lot easier to START the hackle at the head and go backwards, and then catch the hackle with a wire counter-wrapped forward. Just sayin'.
I like this dude becuase he just gets straight to it. I don't have to skip through a 20 minute preamble and then 8 long-winded sidebars throughout the whole thing. Nice.
I'm like lovetheoutdoors9485, once I got my peak I'll never tie on anything else. I believe you can get a piece from peak that attaches to the rotary vertical piece that comes out horizontal. On mine I stole that piece off my previous vice. It locks into place with a screw and solves that finger slipping off problem. Like you I have bent, and indeed even broken hooks tieing. I suspect the hook was tempered making it a bit more brittle, and resistant to bending. I now tie almost exclusively on Mustad 3366 hooks, mostly in size 6 for panfish. Not much trout fishing in eastern North Dakota. Love my peak. I also went back and looked and I see the table top clamp style now costs 40$ more than the weighted base model. They have a very good design there and they know it.
I've been on a kick of tying these lately and me and some buddies finally got the chance to see them in the water and my lord we were impressed. The crazy part is that I actually caught a mouse with this mouse pattern. I casted on the far bank which was all giant flat rocks. Before I started to strip, a buddy who is new to fly fishing asked a question, while I was turned for a few seconds answering him, he pointed to my fly and I turned to see a mouse wrestling with my fly and tumbling down one of the angled flat rocks. I gave it a little twitch and it hooked the mouse. Anyway, we did not catch any browns on it and only fished them for a little while since it just didn't feel like the right time to be fishing mice, but if it's realistic enough to fool another mouse, I'm totally sold that this is the only mouse pattern I really need. When this thing is tied correctly and wet, I doubt there's much else that looks more realistic. Thanks for sharing this one with the world. Hopefully I can comment again with a pic of a big old trout with one of these in its mouth. It's only a matter of time
hey cool fly something is bugging me what's up with that mounted brown trout looks like it has had big chunk bit out of it by a giant or something lol. I'm talking about the 1 on your right behind you
Awesome looking tie your deerhair is topnotch... Def getting some of the peacock bucktail when it drops. Thanks Josh I've learned alot watching your video's. #SouthJersey #Fortescue #DelawareBay
Sounds like we grew up a lot a like, no internet when I was growing up or by the time it came around we were too poor to know it, and in East Tennessee as a kid it was easier to just buy a fly and pull it apart in an attempt to figure it out and put several back together. Anyway, thanks for the tutorials again brother, you’ve definitely helped keep me sane during some long hospital stays here recently. It’s been nice having a place to go get a detailed refresher course on some of my favorite but not often enough tied patterns. Thank God for a good wife that’s smarter than I am, that didn’t feel like searching for small hooks in a hospital bed or room, which meant that I would be tying streamers for a few months in a row. With the kids help, she pulled out every bead box and streamer hook box I had, grabbed every spool of GSP she could find, a half dozen of my favorite bobbins, and started making trip after trip into the hospital with boatloads of plastic totes full of marabou, flash, schlappen, chenilles, etc…. I knew I was a lucky man but dang I didn’t realize I was this blessed. This girl has kept me swimming in materials to keep me motivated and busy, and with your help we’ve been able to do just that. So, long winded I know, but thanks man! Six surgeries in seven months and I don’t know where I would be without the inspiration and motivation because I wanted to give in and give up a while ago.
Hey Josh, being retired now and being too young to be, all I do is sit around now between VA hospital visits and surgeries tying flies and dreaming of good days to come with the youngest on the river. I go through so much material it’s not even funny and at a point where my material orders are approaching $500 or so a month, where are you getting your materials in bulk to tie your streamers, and are you yourself a commercial tier, or do you own your streamer business and tie for yourself or hire on tiers as needed? Would love to have more to do and if it’s related to my passion I would damned near do it just to be doing it. Anyway, was wondering if you could point me in the right direction on sourcing materials buddy?
Just saw this video Josh. Bought a bunch of your stuff when Kelly first got it. I live in Colorado and Charlies Fly Shop touting it also. Wish I could get my hands on more, mostly out of stock where I shop. tying season is upon us. Your spinning hair is awesome.
Man you listening to yourself call some of your work mistakes or garbage kills me, you are a Bob Ross in your own right buddy. Would love to be able to just sit and tie with you one day, I’ve always enjoyed watching ya tie, would just love to sit down with a good bourbon or beer and just spin up some bugs and tell some good stories. Once I get out to Idaho or Montana and get the house up, I’ll have to see if you’re up to visiting a stranger for some fishing lol. A small side note, hard to imagine but Bob Ross was in the military like myself and made it to a rank only one spot away from as high as he could have gone on the enlisted side. Just hard to imagine him barking orders, right?
Man I have to agree with you, I think this is probably my favorite pattern behind the dungeon and I love white, gray, and olive as my top three, not necessarily in that order. I’ve enjoyed watching you tie my friend, and hope to see you still posting more streamer vids.
I just got an order of your hair from Charlie Craven. I’m a bit confused? I bought 2 patches of White Short-Fine hair but, it also says Deer Belly Hair on the package? It is very nice hair. I’m wondering about the Short-Fine coming from the belly?
Hi Tom, glad you like the hair. It is short-fine hair from the belly of a deer. It is very select hair that only a few deer per year produce. I sort all of the hides I process and only package the ones that make the grade.
Your reaction to the dog barking 😂. Great video, I've been looking for ways to recycle spare material. Marabou brushes are great, and I think I could combine the marabou with other spare materials to add some flash etc. Thanks for the tips!
I was recently directed to this video when I asked about how John Stoyanoff fishes his nymphs. I know that the video is five years old, but I would love to hear about John's method, rigging, etc.
He uses a sighter of two colors on his leader, it is a variation of tight line nympging and super effective! Hard to believe that video is 5 Yeats old already...
I don’t know if I missed it, but what hook and size are you tying on? Been looking for the right size dry fly hook to give me enough gap and strength to get a solid hook set into 3+ lb smallies.
My hat goes off to you sir you’re an inspiration you deserve ever bit of success that comes your way !!! I’m travelling to America in May next year and I’ll be doing a bucket list trip to Galloup slide inn and my first purchase will be some of your deer hair !!
I used the D arm and it was effective but I wasn't as fluid with it as the renzetti, it just didn't fit my finger the same. Absolutely solid vise though. I'm sure a little more time with it and I'd be more comfortable with it.
Hey Doug, spinning the thread will pull up some of the slack in it and if you spin it counterclockwise the thread will naturally flow to the tail of your fly making it easier to grab with your left hand while securing materials to the hook.
The look on your face during the dogs being dogs moment was absolutely priceless! I love watching it and I’m glad you left it in the video. Too bad you didn’t share with us what was delivered man lol. Thanks for what you do for the tying community, this video and many others you have helped me get through a lengthy, emergency, VA hospital stay brother so thanks for that! I owe ya one……
@@varnersstreamers would do it again a hundred times over even knowing the outcome! Thanks Josh and keep tying and posting, some of us literally live for this stuff. Planning a move to either Montana or possibly Idaho within the next 18 months so tying like a madman to ensure I can fish every moment I get on the good days when I get there.
