So odd that so many 21st century Mormons aren't aware of the vaults. When I was a kid it seemed to be common knowledge. Driving up the Little Cottonwood Canyon, it would inevitably be at least a short topic of conversation (not infrequently tying into the "last days" and "The Millennium" or something). In other settings it wouldn't be unusual for people to wonder about the amazing things that maybe were in "the vaults" (in addition to genealogical records). Kind of reminds me of the gruesome "temple penalties". As soon as the leaders decided they weren't "useful" anymore, they got memory-holed. TBMs who experienced them wouldn't talk about them ("too sacred" and all that rot). The people whose temple experiences started after 1990 would accuse people of spreading "anti-Mormon lies" whenever someone tried to tell them about the penalties.

I only went to the temple once and it was pre-1990. That was all it took. It was all so unappealing I never went back. I’ve practically blocked it out it was so traumatic. It was the beginning of the end for me although it took me another 30 years to officially resign.

A few weeks ago I read "Raven Rock" a book written by Garrett M. Graff. It is about the US government's effort to maintain continuity of government. One of the chapters discussed the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex in Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs. The complex was built in the late 1950s and early 1960s. According to the author, the government picked the Utah Construction and Mining Company to construct the complex because of their previous work building the LDS vaults in Granite Mountain.

There's also one in a rural area not far from D.C. The elite insiders have bunkers allover the place. Kill Bates has several. A lot of the numerous food recalls lately are being used to stock lots of their bunkers.

As a child during the Cuban middle crisis I can attest to the frightening possibility of a nuclear war. It would not surprise me at all if those granite vaults were also intended to be a possible bomb shelter for top church leadership at the time. As Landon mentions it’s a lot of money just for genealogical records.

AS a former elected official in Utah we were all on the Governors' Emergency Preparedness Team. We had tours of the SEVEN stories beneath the Church Office Building, as well as BYU where food, clothing, water, and tons of emergency medical supplies, and the lowest level is even a morgue in case of the impending disasters. IMO the morgue should be on the top level to toss out dead bodies. *eye roll* This is in prep for the earth to receive it's "paradisiacal glory"... LOL!

You guys need to do an episode on the "Dream Mine" in Salem, Utah. An early Utah Mormon bishop had a "dream" that ancient Nephi treasure was hidden in a cave in the Salem, Utah. Many believing members bought stock in order for them to start mining to find the hidden gold/treasure. Nothing was ever found. The Dream Mine still exists on a hillside in Salem. Many TBM's still own stock in the "Dream Mine" and believe treasure will be found in the last days to save the church... News flash...the church is worth 250 BILLION, so I doubt they will need the treasure now!😮

The Dream Mine annual stockholders meeting is on May 13 at 2:00 PM in the Salem Community Center. You don’t need to have stock to attend. Board Directors speak and questions from the audience are welcome. It’s informative and somewhat entertaining. Also known as the Relief Mine. They have a facebook page. It’s not only a mine. The company has orchards and real estate.

Back in the 60’s my husband took a tour with his Grandma of the vaults. Apparently Tours were common back then . The only thing he can really remember is the reservoir, which he thought was cool. I can see a very practical reason why they don’t give tours anymore though. Even though the population of Salt lake county has boomed, there’s still only a 2 lane highway up the canyon. It’s a nightmare to try to get to those ski resorts in the winter. In the 60’s even 33 south was rural, Draper was all farms and the west valley was even more sparsely populated. Can you imagine the traffic if they have tours now? I’m kinda glad they don’t.

Granite Mountain is misnamed. The rock that both the Granite Mountain vault and Perpetual Storage’s vault are carved into is quartz monzonite, not granite. Quartz monzonite is frequently mistaken for granite due to the similar coloring.

Never Mormon here. The use of underground spaces to save critical records for enterprise institutions isn't unusual at all. So am not surprised that the LDS church has their own underground vault because they have the financial resources to do it themselves. As a matter of fact, there is a company called "Iron Mountain" in the USA which stores client records in an old iron ore mine in NY. They will come to your business as needed, collect your records (paper, hard disk, tapes, etc) and ship them to their secure facilities.

I believe I’ve heard stories of people hearing of documents that they suspected were in the vault (or other storage) but couldn’t request because they weren’t listed. And it was only through public shaming of the church that they were able to access things. Are things publicly categorized and searchable or are some things unfindable? Like, I thought the seer stones were stumbled upon in the vault.

I don't believe there is that much in there other than mementos from beloved penis-holders and redundant genealogy records. What they are doing there is very conspicuously performing security. Regardless of the worth of the objects contained therein it makes people believe there must be extreme value there. It must be immensely valuable based on the money required for this operation. We now know the expenses are less than a thousandth of a percent in any LDS church ledger. The real value involved is in demonstrating the immense value of the objects contained- over and over again. It's marvelous propaganda. Any of JS's belongings have value as proof that the brigamite sect is rightful successor. I appreciate the work, fun to learn about these things!

Honestly, not much considered valuable stuff are not in the Vaults. Anything someone would consider valuable or big ticket items are stored in the President's Vault that is under temple square. The secret "F Vault" really just had journals, meeting notes, old typewriters, first edition of books in different languages. Video and audio recordings. But even the seer stone is kept in the President's vault downtown.

Given the recent knowledge of the church's vast wealth, and as any astute investment advisor will say: "diversify", meaning invest across a wide spectrum or assets, then doesn't it make sense that there would also be a considerable and sizable quantity of what is often called "God's money" -- GOLD!! It's safe against market fluctuations and government collapse, but most importantly - it's secret. No one would ever know how much is buried there. Oh my!

I remember back in the 70s-80s hearing sbout the church getting a lot of gold from Imelda Marcos of the Phillipines when their government collapsed & a large amount of gold was made available to buy. The rumor, not church policy or anything like that, was that the gold would be needed to"buy" freedom for the saints if a greedy dictator took over the country. 😂 totally urban legend!

Guarding & protecting genealogical records might make more sense when one considers that when the Savior returns, at some point, He will receive these records from the Prophet or some GA. If that is true, then Satan would use every means at his disposal to thwart & destroy that plan.

@@nancylowe2692 Athanasius Kircher was a Jesuit Priest in the 1600's. He claimed to have the ability to translate Egyptian Hieroglyphs into a form of "renewed Egyptian" that could then be translated into Latin. He claimed to translate the writings from an Egyptian Obelisk which he said was the Obelisk of Nephi. He also dabbled in automatons and made "balls of curious workmanship" with pointers and spindles with writings on them. Kircher went on to write several books on these subjects which Dartmouth College had in their libraries. Since then the Church has bought those books and tucked them away in the BYU Vault.
