In this video I replicate a piece of concept art that Eyvind Earle created for Disney's 1959 classic, Sleeping Beauty while talking about the artist's interesting life and his unique style.
Thank you to ArchiWorks and crystalheart9 for inspiring me to try some Eyvind trees!
If there is an artist you would like me to try replicating, please let me know in the comments below. Thanks for watching!
My process for this painting:
Using acrylic gouache, I started with the background colours. As always, when replicating mid-century, gouache illustrations, I work my way forward in space, laying down the "ground" first. I use a larger brush for this part, usually a 1" flat head works best. (in this video I use a round brush because my flat head wasn't available)
As I move forward in space I do each colour, one at a time. I make sure my gouache is the consistency of melted ice cream. I do this by adding a very small amount of water at a time and taking my time mixing it with the gouache until it's nice and creamy.
I do multiple layers to create the opaque effect, waiting for each layer to completely dry before moving on to the next layer.
When painting more detailed areas I hold my brush very close to the bristles to gain more control.
Another helpful tip to remember is to think in shapes. Try not to see the elements in your composition as what they are: a castle, a person, trees, etc. but as shapes: a triangle, a rhombus, a square, a line, etc.
When painting straight lines (like the trunks of Eyvind's trees) turn your canvas around and paint downwards. This technique allows gravity to help out and instead of dragging your brush upwards, you pull the brush downwards to give a smoother, more effortless line.
For a nice, bright white, try adding a little yellow (Naples yellow is best) to the white paint. It will actually look brighter than straight up white from the tube.
And last tip, use washi tape to mask off your dimension as it doesn't tend to rip the surface underneath when you remove it.
Thanks again for visiting! Please like and subscribe and come back soon!

@@children_of_the_craft I love painting portraits in gouache, which is why I came across your channel, but I know NOTHING about concept art or Disney artists. The only thing I do really love when I go there are the gouache paintings for the haunted mansion. They are so perfect and that weird turquoise green color is seriously amazing.

@@ivyclough8969 Oh yeah, the haunted mansion paintings!!! Good call! I have been there several times, and you are so right, the atmosphere is so strong.... that turquoise green. I need to go look up some pics. And I would love to learn more about doing portraits in gouache. It's the one area I've avoided out of fear.

Just wanted to say that I'm loving your content so much! I really enjoyed your videos on Mary Blair and was super excited to see this one pop up in my feed. I haven't had the time to really paint in forever but these videos have me ready to break out the gouache and just have fun experimenting again. Thank you!

I also like that style. It's simple with the design and with the color palette but still gets the point across. I also enjoy the accompanying featurette that comes with "Sleeping Beauty" called "Four Artists Paint A Tree" that goes into the design work of "Sleeping Beauty" of four artists working as a cooperative group, but also contrasts with how those artists (including Mr. Earle) paint a tree based on their own individual thoughts, perceptions and experiences of and with that tree. (And now that I think about it, it probably should have been called "Four Artists Paint A Tree While A Camera Man Is Filming Them" because the camera man was also creating a moving work of art while they were painting.) 🙂

This is wild! I JUST watched that short two days ago! It was so inspiring to each artists' strategy. I think your title is better though... The camera man did a great job! Thanks for the comment :)

This is so good! :). What kind of paper do you recommend for this?
@children_of_the_craft
@children_of_the_craft Год назад
Thank you so much! I recommend using illustration board. You can also use wooden canvas, matboard, watercolour paper, or multimedia paper. Because gouache is a "water medium" -- meaning, you mix water with it (typically), it causes lighter weight paper to buckle. I hope this helps!
