Genshin Impact has passed 2 years of launch, and it's been a very tumultuous path filled with equal parts memorable experiences and frustrating drama. Today I want to have a retrospective analysis on how Genshin has changed from launch to now. Is it better now? Or does it still face the same problems it did when it first started?

The main problem is that neither side gives an actual shit of what the other side enjoys long as it doesn't affect them why should they care? The downplay of the core combat has been happening for a very long time with nerfs here and there to mobs, bosses and etc. The hardcore playerbase wasn't even giving two shits to these nerfs not even all you content creators to the degree that you are now over a poorly written interview that I question its source as much as I hated how shit the follow up as well as the lack of anything since they asked throw away questions and put themselves in dead-end. That entire interview was so bad and no one is talking about it only that ONE sentence. You analyze so well but refuse to acknowledge that interview underneath a better journalist would have asked broader questions and better follow-ups. For example since you have no plans to make another end-game content LIKE THE ABYSS! Will you make endgame content different from the abyss that players can enjoy void of any "anxiety" such as the ikku rogue-like that many players enjoyed and further will you keep making combat related events? Instead they asked about accessories...but you see the devil in what was said and not said? We know absolutely nothing..due to how crap job the journalist did, anyways, since the gripe is about endgame now you all give a damn? Where was this intensity when inazuma mobs were nerfed? Devalin, Childe? Etc. Not even a single raised brow it was only when the precious endgame became a matter...yeah...ty if both sides can't give a shit where it was happening outside of what they care for how can change happen? If none can point out how bad that interview is ndquestion how valid the journalist, source and how it was conducted..but all you care about is one part of it. You meaning the people that only look at that one part and not the full scope. As much as I enjoy the way you do your content as I love all aspects of a game I'm disappointed in everyone over this drama if all it took was a poorly done interview to cause anything, I'm not strictly on anyone side but God damn this was a bad interview it was by all accounts...but who cares right? Since only one part of it matters the answer to a poorly done question with no follow up...mhm...who cares? Right?

The worst part besides the "if you disagree you are wrong" is the "this parts are much easier to correct" It's not. You clearly are no programmer and don't know jack. The programmers and devs did an AMAZING job with the new reactions that they must have been working non-stop for 2+ years. The small details and lore that keep the world and game alive. Just look at ToF. People like the combat just fine, but more than half of my friends who played stopped after the first week because they didn't have any lore or character or anything really well written. The combat there is great, but combat alone don't make a game as good as genshin.

Been playing since 1.0. Old enough to remember prototype star glitter was called prototype grudge and what not. Can definitely say the game is better in terms of atmosphere and feeling lively with the addition of sumeru. But over all it doesn't feel significantly different from when the game released in terms of mechanics, significant features, or things to just do in the game.

The core problem persists, and it's as if they're determined to make it persists so they don't compete with their other game. - Story writing still sucks, as if they don't want to compete with honkai. - Combat still have no proper end game, as if they don't want to compete with ZZZ. But these 2 are the very very core of the game, doing quest feels like a freaking chore because it's painful to read the dialogues. Doing abyss feels tiresome because it's been stale for the past 2 years already. And the game is all about exploring the world, doing quest to unlock more exploration, and finish exploration to gain resources to upgrade characters so we can do combat. The only great part among those process, is the exploration, which is then feels meaningless, because the reward is meaningless, as there's no medium for us to use the combat power we attained, while we need to bore ourselves to death doing quests just to unlock more exploration. They want genshin to be unique in it's exploration open world system, but this aspect is intricately woven with the 2 other aspects they don't want to improve, cheapen the overall feeling of the game.

It's been 2 years and they still don't give us a goal other than to wait for the story to unfold after umfteen years. Most of the event mechanics are good yet they are fleeting and they are being hypocritical with saying about people will feel more anxious if they add more difficult things when in fact the things they add are time limited and wont be back making newer players not able to experience them.

I would say Genshin's biggest problem is still an over dependence on FOMO. They use it to drive almost everything from monetization to engagement on a daily basis. Even the resin system and domains giving different rewards on different days plays into it to a degree. This makes the game feel like it needs me to play at its pace on its schedule rather than at my own leisure and aside from the predatory gambling mechanics remains my biggest criticism.

Not to mention the pacing is extremely fast. You literally can't do anything else in the game if you want to 100% the events that come out one after the other lol. I'm so far behind in the story that I can't participate in any of the new events as they come out anyways so I just gave up. Only playing still to do dailies/weeklies to slowly rack up primos so I can do a massive pull and still not get any of the characters I want in like 20 years.

@@BortaMaga It was also one of the issues I had. That and some of the more interesting parts of Albedo's stories are locked behind events, so i feel like newer players will find it hard to connect with him. For Scaramouche at least, I feel like they've stopped introducing plot important characters in events and for those who missed out on the Irodori festival, they've gone out of their way to fully flesh out Scaramouche in two mandatory Archon quests. That and they e started uploading event cutscenes on RU-vid for those who might miss out. However, I still hope they find a better to get new players up to speed and not make them feel like they missed out on something very important to the story.

Ah yes, had the same problem when I took a break before Liyue even had its mainline quest started. I'm not a fan of the game giving me a little bit more to do once in a while (especially thinking about questlines that need daily resets), rather wanting to be able to do things my pace, so I took a break and missed out on those events. It's already not fun that there is so much content only available outside of the game - and then there's events which are sometimes a little more than a mere mini-game and very sometimes are apparently important to the lore. Nahida's recent quest even has a throwaway line for "Bongohead" from that one fungus battle event. Going through the main quest alone is already pretty convoluted, asking you to do / finish some random other quests inbetween. Then again, a lot of the things in this game seem unnecessary convoluted or receive way more attention from the game itself than warranted in my eyes - just look at all those tutorial pop-ups!
@Geminosity
@Geminosity Год назад
One major problem I noticed, coming back to the game after taking a break for a full year, is that you're basically locked out of using your new shiny gatcha characters unless you speed-run through the exploration and likewise the events WANT you to speed-run the story, warning you that quick-starting is sub-optimal. I wanted to take my time going through chasm and Sumeru along with the associated archon/world quests which were added after I left, but because I rolled Nahida I ended up kind of rushing through Chasm to get to Sumeru and just forcing my way through exploration instead of enjoying it at a leisurely pace so I could unlock/access the essential bits to get her advancement materials. I also have the current events as a ticking clock to get so far through the story too or I miss out on freebies... it's a terrible bit of design. This is content that could've helped shore up player's play time if allowed to be indulged in at a gentle pace so there's less droughts but instead there's a lot of mechanics that punish you for not sprinting through it.

As I was playing the boar-catching event for the Weinlesefest event, there was one thing I couldn't get out of my head: "Why am I constantly having to learn new, temporary gimmicks? Why can't they put that effort into improving the core gameplay instead?" I generally liked the rhythm game event because I liked rhythm games. But compared to dedicated rhythm games, even the 'pro' difficulty was barely 'medium'. If I wanted to play an actually good rhythm game, I would go play a rhythm game. I play Genshin because I want to play Genshin. I wish Genshin would focus on what it already has instead of chasing after gimmicks.

Need artifact experience go farm arts on the map which is worth 80 resin in domain runs Need Mora sell those arts for over 70K per day which is only worth 20+ resin of leyline farming but you can get 2mil mora per month selling them and it takes 2.9mil mora to 80/90 8/8/8 a character, so you need to farm a 3rd of the leylines you normally would just on mora

Not to mention the enemies do cool idle animations when u arent fighting them, like recently i came upon an ermite playing music while the treasure hoarders were sitting around in the camp and listening to him. Or like that girl (who reminds me of Jeht) dances so happily. It makes the world feel way more alive than before. They included well written npcs (unlike a certain Teppai) who fight along with u in world quests, and for the first time it makes sense why the traveller ended up getting involved in a country's affairs, so credit where credit is due. By nothing to do I mean, no incentives that mihoyo gives us to do it like co-op, killing monsters in the overworld, doing abyss over and over again, etc. I think the game itself has to give us the player some incentives to do content inside their game, rather than the player themselves creating incentives for themselves.

I don't mind that they want to make the game casual. I'm fine with rewards being obtainable without a ton of min/max'ing or perfect play. Heck, I'll go as far as to say I prefer that. But that doesn't mean there aren't issues. One is that there is often no way to crank up the difficulty for players that want it to be harder. Me, I don't care much for the Spiral Abyss, but I'd really, really, like to up by my WL more, so that enemies don't die if I so much as glance at them. Purely optional for the player to do this, no extra rewards, just, if you want stronger enemies, you can have them. Another is the variety of content. Spiral Abyss over and over gets old. I don't care if the game caps the rewards for "end game content" aka the Abyss at what they currently are, but just gives us more than one path to earn that reward. That way, maybe I'll play the Abyss this cycle, and do the Rogue-like the next time. And, of course, I can always do both if I want to, for the fun of it. And then there's the resin/artifact system. If my enjoyment is supposed to come from variety of characters, from trying out different team comps, then the game design needs to support that. I need to be able to farm up a decent artifact set in a reasonable amount of time. Otherwise, I'm not going to try out a team that uses an EM clam set Sayu. Heck, we're on the third banner in Sumeru, and I still don't have Collei or DMC in a 4 piece dendro set. I simply haven't gotten a good hourglass or circlet yet, and, of course, getting an on set dendro cup... yeah, as if. And, of course, I can't save loadouts to quickly swap between two set ups, in case I want to easily swap between an EM Raiden and one built for her burst. The game rewards me if I focus on a couple of teams that can crush everything. It punishes me for trying to diversify.

Especially your last point stands out to me here. Like yes I get that a gacha game is using an energy system to make it so you have to come back repeatedly day after day, but that being said it limits the creativity that MiHoYo tends to preach and also makes it difficult to get new characters set up for any form of content. The powering up system of characters is rather open ended, but getting the resources to power up the character, their weapon (let alone getting the desired weapon), and their artifacts just takes too much time for people not constantly capping out their resin daily (which requires the utilization of primogems, aka irl money, to achieve). Take for example the Cyno I just pulled, he is currently sitting in my roster at lvl 39 and I have yet to touch the desert area because I'm first completing the initial jungle, however, I have farmed out all the regisvine pieces he needs which takes a maximum of 960 resin and minimum of 640 resin (4 to 6 days) of dumping your daily resin into the boss without accounting for the gems needs for ascension, exp books which need to be grinded out for levels, or the collection of regional specialties which you can only get a set amount of per 3 days before they reset in that 72 hour period of picking them. Got to also make sure you have the talent materials grinded out as well because the character isn't going to do a whole lot of damage without levels there which tends to have players take talents up to minimum lvl 6, but often times taking it much higher than that to lvls 8, 9, and 10 for 2 or 3 skills on a character which will eat up more days of resin accumulation on top of only being available on 3 days each week. Then their is also weapon enhancement materials needed for a new weapon being built up from scratch which also has the rule of 3 days per week for collection. On top of that tac on collecting a moderate artifact set for new characters (most of which are released alongside a brand new tailor made artifact set for the character) which we all know can easily take thousands of resin to maybe get a set of decent pieces for the one character you are trying to empower. And to top it all off you also need to run leylines for mora to do any action included above as their is always mora utilized at a catalyst. Mind you this is all for one dps character and MiHoYo likes to introduce 1 to 3 characters per update on top of other characters you own that are just sitting in your roster of untouched characters. Point being that maybe if you are lucky you can afford to power up one character per update without getting too hung up on min-maxing stats and this problem is only becoming more apparent for newer players as old units get left on the bench to gather dust (it is already a fairly annoying problem for a day 1 player who is classified as a dolphin in terms of amount spent, about 1.2k over the last 2 years which hurts me looking back on it). The only real solutions to this for players (without intervention from MiHoYo) is to become pickier about who your choose to power up due to limited resources at your disposal. This is the exact loop Vars described above with less people spending on more banners because of the lack of being able to utilize said new and shiny character. At its core, the resin situation is probably the biggest problem this game has at its epicenter creating a tensions between the players and developers, the former losing out on fun factor in the game and the ladder losing out on profits. If you made it this far, uh thanks for reading random internet person, please point out any flaws or pieces I might have missed as the constructive feedback is always appreciated when it comes to these posts and it is just fun to read what others have to say in response.

Live service environments thrive on retention and they're currently capturing 60 million average players on a monthly basis, so they're still retaining their core audience. However, it's questionable how they can continue to retain their market dominance if more worthy competitors arise and show greater progress.

Well, I personally think that if we need to do fun co-op, like PVP, it shall not be dependent on the character's in-game strength which is the result of a ton of RNG and level and possibly whaling. I like the current TGC PVP system which everybody was given fair resources, unlike the in-game characters which you have unchangable RNG, potential whaling, and need quick reflexes plus a ton of iframing skill, character controlling skills while you can take your time for TGC. Plus, when bosses are designed for multiplayer instead of single player, these bosses would have much bigger hitbox and hit frequency, which makes them generally impossible to beat in single-player. Plus, people have a natural tendency to compete, and the amount of difference and complexity for in-game kits would probably make the community extremely toxic, though Mihoyo may get short-term sales surge for people suddenly began to whale. You know, whatever they do, they're standing on a needle. The "right path" may be an illusion.

I think that, while Sumeru improves certain things in the open world, it also managed to add a few new problems. Mostly due to its design having multiple places at the same X,Y coordinates, but at different depths. For someone who plays casually after work for a couple of hours before bed and on my off days, I feel the amount of content Hoyoverse provides in each update is just the right amount to keep me and others like me from feeling overwhelmed by the game’s contents. Granted, there’s a little bit of a feeling of emptiness that comes towards the end of a particular patch when all the events are over, but that hardly lasts for a week before we get new events, world quests and sometimes archon quests. What I am saying is that as an endgame player who can only afford to play a few hours a day, I believe HYV found the perfect balance and the right amount of content to release with every patch so people don’t feel idle most of the time but they don’t feel the overwhelming need to catch up either. I somewhat agree and disagree. Pokémon is the game this game is trying to emulate. The endgame of Pokémon is not the battle tower, but people play endgame to “collect them all”. That’s have always been the main attraction for Pokémon and Genshin obviously wants you to pay for that experience. ( collect as many characters as possible). The hardcore players have been asking for more endgame content for 25 years now and game freak have been ignoring that and have been rewarded generously for 25 years. The fact is both Pokémon and Genshin know their player base extremely well. Artifact farming is exactly the same as IV / EV training, a feature designed as a time sink that is never needed to clear any content (Other than may be a bit of Battle tower/ abyss) in the game and both game freak and Hoyo will never add any endgame content that requires it. The artifact farming in Genshin is designed to be as tedious as possible. Look at character level, ascension, weapon ascension, talent level, every other piece of character leveling is very predictable with small variance. It’s not that Genshin doesn’t know how to design predictable systems it’s just that they donot want artifacts to be that kind of system. Same as Pokémon, leveling Pokémon, acquiring new moves, all are predictable in Pokémon but not IV/ EV training. The difficulty and lack of end game content is not a oversight, but a deliberate design choice. Because both Pokémon and Genshin wants you to focus on horizontal progression ( Acquiring new characters and playing with them at a moderate time investment level) than making the most powerful characters ( Heavily invest to Vertical Progression). It is not a mmo where gaining power is the experience it wants to offer. Offering more difficult endgame is something the devs of both hoyo and game freak sees as not a potential but a detriment to their horizontal design choice.

Very good comparison! I've always viewed them as very similar and it's the reason I like both - they're simple on the surface with the main appeal being casual, collecting Pokemon/characters and enjoying a rather casual story and gameplay - and then if you like, you can get deeper into the combat system and mess with IV/EV or artifact optimization respectively. The difficulty ceiling of battle tower and Abyss is not very high but it's fun to try out new builds on different characters. One diference is that PKMN has PvP for the hardcore players. But I think as much as the hardccore players want these games to change, Game Freak / Hoyo been very successful with this dual approach of casual/hardcore and it's likely they'll never change their formular, why would they, there's other games like MMOs for that
@blueray222
@blueray222 Год назад
The only thing about that is that Pokemon offers PvP, where your EV training and careful team building is rewarded, Genshin has nothing of the sort. So while you can optimize your Pokemon for a tangible reason in competitive player battles, there's no reason to optimize your artifacts for anything but clearing the same old Abyss a little faster according to Hoyo.
@pratyaydatta2014
@pratyaydatta2014 Год назад
@@blueray222 yes, I agree. Pokémon does offer PvP for their hardcore players, that is something the dedicated player base can look forward too. But game freak itself doesn’t really care about pvp in my opinion. I do think, because in Pokémon you get pokemons by playing where in Genshin you get it by paying, Genshin will probably not add it due to the stigma of being a p2w game. That stigma is more detrimental than any potential upside for adding p2p. Which does put the hardcore player base of genshin in a tough spot. The only thing they can do is self imposed challenges (like nuzlocks in Pokémon that their hardcore player base have came up with.) Yes, Pokémon & Genshin have some differences mostly due to their respective business model (that dictates somewhat dictates what can or cannot be in the game), but I think it’s obvious the underlying game design philosophies are very similar. As a side note, game freak/Nintendo was so adamant in their own approach they didn’t even release their own games on their home consoles for 2 decades. Switch basically forced them to make it happen. Mobile is clearly the platform hoyo sees as the most important moving forward. I see hoyo being similarly adamant in their core philosophies. It’s not that hard to do when you are that successful. The anime, all the other collabs with like banks, cars, restaurants - these are all tactics Pokémon used outside of their game to get as big as they have gotten. Even outside of game it seems hoyo is trying to use the same tactics (atleast mostly in China. ) TLDR: yes there are differences, but they are trying to follow similar strategies and have similar basic game philosophy.

EV training is literally the most predictable grind in Pokemon. Chug a bunch of vitamins and you get 100 EV right off the bat. There are berries that reduce EVs. At the very least for myself, I’m just glad they’ve gotten the main storyline back on track in terms of being fairly good quality Mondstat and Liyue quests were solid enough quests but then inazuma happened and to this day, I still think the entirety of that quest line even with their handling of the proper conclusion, was a shitshow of bizarre plot points and bad pacing. Sumeru so far has been far more satisfying and surprisingly more profound than any of the regions weve visited prior in terms of overarching themes that puts Inazuma’s attempt at depicting political drama to shame. Usually this sort of heavy stuff was more found in the background sidequests but Sumeru hasn’t shy’d away from the wider topics (gatekeeping/hoarding of knowledge, misinformation/disinformation campaigns) while also haven’t characters not come off as stupid or trying to sound smarter than they are or just being a jerk because it’s “charming” or funny.

Mondstadt and liyue are pretty simple stories so they don't need detailed world building like inazuma should have.There's too much characters involved in inazuma archon quest, yet there's not enough character building for everyone except ayaka and yae miko... instead its focus is all over the place..like yae miko and teppei...and dating sims.....the 2nd arc of archon quest is somewhat explaining something but even that wasn't enough to make inazuma lore easier to digest. *Video Summary:* 1. Genshin aims at mass appeal. 2. But mass appeal led to debate about what kind of game it is, due to clashing design ideals and gameplay approaches. 3. One approach was hardcore exploration, common to open-world aRPGs. But Genshin has a content wall. 4. Admittedly, base content has since grown to ~200 hrs for new players. 5. However, other open-world games have long term objectives/options to create your own (e.g. sandbox/mods). Genshin still lacks sufficient long term intrinsic & extrinsic motivators. 6. Once Genshin's main content is completed, all it offers is pulling, character building, and domains. 7. Some QoL has improved - strongbox, crafting, element balancing, exploration 8. But many problems remain - non-permanent events, artifact RNG, expensive gacha, 5* outpacing 4*s, stagnant rewards, lack of endgame. 9. Genshin has improved, but inconsistently: increasing ''presentation and polish'', while neglecting 'root problems''. (e.g. fix artifact rng VS expanding strongbox.) 10. (To Vars) Genshin is foremost an open-world aRPG, and that should take priority over all else. My take? Welcome to live service. Genshin is an unfinished game. Once you're done with the main content, bail if you don't like the service. Your real choices are to spend time and money on their dailies and monetization loops, or save yourself. Should this be? Ideally no, but mihoyo is doing business. So are content creators like Vars. Eat what they feed you, or leave when you're full. I consider myself somewhat of a meta player but after having tried several gacha games I now realize how unfulfilling endgame content feels in this genre. I like the odd spikes of difficulty here and there (mostly in some events) but that's about it. Any sweaty end goal would feel more frustrating than anything to me, especially if it involves leaderboards because the main and more direct way to improve your performances/ranking would simply be to get more constellations. Maybe if they made it so that every character is c0/r1 or something like that I could enjoy it but it seems highly unlikely. I know this has been said before but Genshin's huge variety of features is one of its greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses, because every player can find something they truly enjoy, but will have next to no interest in other features that some players care deeply about. I think this means that there will always be some degree of discourse around what HoYoverse should be focusing on developing, because players will never all want the same thing. The easy example is the Serenitea Pot. People who don't have any interest in housing systems say it should receive less attention from HoYoverse, but people who do enjoy it are disappointed with how LITTLE attention it's received since its introduction and are dying for more content (myself included). I think, due to differing priorities, some players fail to see how much certain features and systems are valued by other players. Regardless, it's got to the point that HoYoverse needs to decide what kind of game they really want this to be and double down, even if they lose some players, because in, what I believe to be, an attempt to please everyone, they are pleasing no one. The company's intentions for their biggest game shouldn't be up to interpretation.

We have come a long way from Mondstadt to Sumeru and I'm glad to say Genshin is improving drastically, from Characters to animation and soundtrack everything is very well crafted. Or. You know. Blatant power creep simply hasn't come into play yet because Genshin releases characters at such a slow rate relative to other gacha games. 2 years in, and Genshin has fewer characters in total than something like FGO had at launch. You can definitely see an impulse towards power creep, with shit like OP archons, and characters like Yelan and Kazuha, but that's held back by the fact that it'd take Genshin 4+ years to release as many characters as other gacha games will release in one.

I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking what if they packaged this up as a stand alone game, with DLC characters for example. I probably would have spent much more, but whales much less. I'd favour a hybrid system, you can outright pay a moderate fixed amount for 1st copy of a character, but leave the RNG part in for additional. I think that would make it much more acceptable to gacha-adverse gamers while leaving whaling open. As much as I also dislike the artefact system, what could you replace it with that wont break the game another way? Make it too easy to get a perfect set, and you run out of things to do. Make it incredibly grindy so you get progress like some old Korean MMO? No thanks.

One thing they could easily implement for Endgame content would be custom domains, where players could add different monsters and or build structures like in the "mario maker" event (Basically creating your own spiral abyss floors). This would be accessible for all players because they can choose to create or play whichever domain they like. You could even add on special rules to make it harder or change up gameplay. You could even create time challenges, jump and runs or mazes Along with that I would add a sort of reputation store where you could for example buy Constallations for the starter characters, rotating 4-star weapons (maybe even favonius or the like), weapon glows/skins and other goodstuff. The amount of reputation points you could earn would obviosly capped and can be optained by completing other people's domains or creating domains and getting positiv reviews for them by the players. In my opinion this could be an almost endless source of content like in Minecraft and improve the community aspect of the game. What do you guys think about this idea?

Overall good video. And yeah, the core issues with some of the problems people have though I wouldn’t say isn’t just relegated to the endgame content but also the regular content that people want to get through. For example, the World Level system is absolutely terrible because it forces people that want to catch up on the story to have to play with others and grind artifacts because of how it automatically advances and under extremely limited circumstances allow you to go back a little but eventually you’ll get to a point where your world level WILL outpace your real progression if you just play casually (and listen to “advice”.) Like, a player shouldn’t even need to grind 5* artifact sets to play through the story if they want to be a casual, yet here I am with fully maxed 4* artifact sets stuck in Inazuma’s Archon Quest with my world level leveled down at AR45 (effective WL4) and I can’t do any damage to Raiden in the first encounter with her. For a game that’s so focused on trying to keep a casual playerbase, it’s systems like these that actively turn players away, on top of their refusal for endgame improvements as well, which overall just goes to show that Mihoyo/Hoyoverse is just more interested in letting their popularity get to their head and being complacent by doing everything they can to “improve” the casual experience via creating distractions from the real problem (more new locations, more new puzzles, more new minigames, etc.)

A LOT. More than I have ever had in other games that I've played previously. Colleagues, friends, family, kids, teens, adults, male, female... you name it. Granted, this is a sample size of a friends list of around 30 people (around 50 if you count the ones who have already stopped playing), It still speaks volumes of Genshin's widespread appeal. And guess what? Only two people on that friends' list actively participate in the spiral abyss and 36 star it regularly. My friend, and........ my other f2p account who is on my friends' list (lol). And after speaking and having critical discussions with my friends / cousins / colleagues about what they like and don't like about the game, it has been rather.... eye-opening. I asked this question of all of them: "Which patch was your favorite? What event was your favorite?". Do you know what a majority of them said? Lantern rite was most people's favorite.... why? Because of the pretty lanterns and that wholesome cinematic at the end. Most of them loved............. Windblume (ugh... i know right?).... they loved it because they could co-op with each other without the stress of needing to actually build their characters to be on an equal playing field. @cherluv8352
@cherluv8352 Год назад
I agree with this point yes, but the thing is why not both? Having the teapot for design enthusiasts, having a TCG endgame for the turnbased enthusiasts, are both arguably a "plus". Catering to the majority is all well and good yes, but it never hurt to catering to a niche, or minority as well. For example, makeup companies can just create white-centric makeup instead of catering to the darker minority aka being more inclusive, if they just went by majority. The thing is genshin impact want to be a game for all, they have a good (wasted) combat system, its gatcha and whales who want to be stronger pull for c6r1 for that high, theorycrafters thrive in crunching numbers and predicting potential. I mean it's okay to neglect that niche, but that doesn't say much about Genshin being lacking overall. I think the FOMO factor is on the new events, as you said people's fave events are Lantern Rite or Windblume, what of people who missed it? They miss basically a chunk of lore and the enjoyment :/. People don't get FOMO if they cannot design their teapot (even if it has rewards as well), as well as people don't get FOMO when they can't explore the region as fast or not do the archon quest immediately. So its bs that genshin said the "anxiety" factor was in the spiral abyss because, as you said, people just ignore it, since they dont really care about it. It wouldn't be hard to make a "tryhard" combat endgame either, they made events that already have good combat. They have the data to make it permanent. Mihoyo is putting a hard stop and essentially saying, if you want a harder game, find another game this one is for casuals, and that is bad not only for their revenue and business model. Let's take in mind as well that "casuals" aka the majority are f2p, mhy do not get much revenue to them, they only contribute basically a free advertisement and a booming fanbase (whether good or bad) compared to the minority of megawhales that are basically directly paying to add quality to the game for the majority of us to enjoy. It's not simply that they cannot add combat endgame because only a few people play spiral abyss, since they added more systems in the serenitea pot, and since I am one of the people who do design my pot, I would like to say we are fairly under the minority as well. There is no consistency if the agent is "niche" don't get love. The thing is they want to kill off the tryharder metawhores because they only want casuals in this game. It's sort of filtering their audience. (The reason for this is pulls. They don't want a random ass youtuber keeping you from pulling for meta if they release a mid unit with beautiful animations, they want you to know that its not going to matter anyways since the game is not hard, some child can do it with a blindfold, so just pull~) I would love a game with genshin's complex elemental system to be as hard as like say, Tower of Fantasy (another game I'm playing). Compared to genshin, the artistry is well below, but in terms of things to do, you will never be bored with working your ass off trying to defeat an evolved pyro regisvine (robarg) that you can't even defeat on your own. It also has a team-based spiral abyss-esque endgame. Basically, all the tryharders and grinders wet dream. I dont spend money, so I don't really care abt genshin endgame being a card game but if I was a c6r5 whale who poured a lot of money in this game and has nothing to show for it, well the youtubers already echoed the sentiments. In my friendgrp, most of them already achieved 36* abyss because we've been here for a long time. When you're just to that point where you're only pulling for what you want, and you get them. There is no incentive for an f2p to pull for consts because they already got what they want anyway. There's no incentive for finding perfect artifacts either or levelling up talents and give them a crown, if there are no places to see them shine. Which is just generally a bad business plan and model, if they want people to pull more and spend more. In a business perspective, they are killing off their social media/youtuber influencers as they basically starve them of content long term (most of the videos are either character guides and builds, one shot/ team comp showcases, should you pull etc etc), and not saying that no one will do it, it's just since people will just adopt the "what is this for when there is nowhere to use them?" mindset, that will hurt the "goal centric" and dopamine rush in grinding/gatcha games. The only way they can get coverage are story and events (both which are one time thing and once finished no more content) and pulling videos (then just idk box the character cause lack of mats) these RU-vidrs will go on to other games because of this. TLDR; genshin being an action based rpg (if there is no such endgame) is false advertising at this point, they will only cater to casuals as it's an exploration game, a visual novel, a home decoration game, pokemon-esque game and now a card game. It's basically a playable art piece, which what drew me in as well. I just have to play ToF for harder content and more endgame ig.

"So its bs that genshin said the "anxiety" factor was in the spiral abyss because, as you said, people just ignore it, since they dont really care about it." - The anxiety factor definitely is bs, and I still think to this day that it is translation error, but the meme remained. However, people don't just ignore it. The fact is, primogems are so INTRINSICLY tied to the reward systems of Genshin, that if the more f2p or newer players are not able to get them due to the high difficulty of the content, they actually complain about not being able to get all the rewards on the surveys. I know a lot of people like this. Again, it doesn't matter if we think they're entitled or not,... they do it regardless. So no... they don't ignore it. I don't mind fighting the same bosses and enemies over and over again, but being forced to do it every day for multiple weeks if not an entire month to get their level, weapon level, talent levels, artifacts, required mora, etc to make them playable instead of being allowed to grind it all in a few dedicated days feels awful. I understand it's there to keep people coming back, making it harder to quit and more likely to spend money (not to mention many whales spend money on resin), but it makes getting new characters feel kind of empty. I have almost every 4 star character in the game but I don't use them because I grinded the 4-5 characters I play and really don't want to spend months getting others to a playable state at World Level 8.

I was late coming to Genshin & may not have found it at all had Onigiri kept the NA server online. After 7+ years of slaughtering yokai my account was gone & I had to find another game to start over. So I stumbled across Genshin while trawling youtube & various gaming review sites & found a new virtual home. While I agree that more permanent content is needed & the fomo instilled by the banner system is palpable it's no better or worse that any other gacha game. Personally, I enjoy the lore of the world & it's characters but would like a bit more variation in the 'daily' content. Maybe just a few more involved random events rather that take x to y & get z or kill a for b to save c, after all variety is the spice of life.

I personally still love it. I'm AR59 so late game right now, but I love just playing a bit each day, like 30 mins. Every game I've been playing over the years was like this, I guess it's just my style. If I have more time, I will play an event and enjoy it, or rush it on the last day for the rewards. Kinda wishing it had less temporary stuff, but just artifact farming, seeing how lucky I will be today, perfecting my builds and all this is very fun and rewarding to me. And this will logically never end, as there will always be new characters I will want and wish to build. Also, the game is breathtaking and full of details. I think that is one of my favourite parts.

My overall thoughts on Genshin is that it has three main concerns always pulling at its attention: money-making, gameplay, and art. Art is top priority. Yes, I do mean the visuals and music, and even the story. But has anyone other than me analyzed the game's literary themes? Mondstadt explores responsibility, Liyue explores trust, and Inazuma explores vulnerability. Dainsleif's two interludes cover faith and hope. I'm convinced the game is setting itself up to conclude "Love rules the universe" while exploring what Love is and how human error often keeps Love from doing its thing. (I'm typing upper-case "Love" to mean the truest and most powerful form of the concept, not an actual divine being, although the game does make a point of connecting its themes equally to our relationships with all beings, mortal or divine.) If you ask me, the game exists at all because people had some powerful messages they wanted to communicate, and they chose a videogame as their artistic medium. Next, and at a close second, is money-making. Their approach here is much less idealistic; honestly, I'd say its a bit evil. Tartaglia really comes to mind, with his dream-come-true image and psychopathic underbelly. It still fits, though, because Liyue's story notes the difference between trusting people because they're morally trustworthy (Ningguang and Rex Lapis) versus trusting people becuase they"re effectively reliable (Childe and Rex Lapis). In the money-making department, Genshin leans hard on the latter. And they're very good at it. Their last priority, like Geo is the worst-ranked element, is gameplay. This part of Genshin must yield all concessions to the other two aspects before it can say its piece. The developers are doing pretty well with what they've got, but when Amber's character theme is "optimism/courage," so the art department says her skill has to represent "her companion is the good luck that she makes herself, blowing up in the enemies' faces," there's only so much developers can do. Miss Scientific Observation throws an experiment at her problems. Mr. Dramatic Gestures chucks some bull at his. Miss Exoticism's charged attack is about poking unfamiliar things with a stick to see if it's dangerous, if she can cook with it, or both. Physical damage represents what the character can do by themselves, while elemental damage involves help, fate, chance, or anything else. Yes, each character is fundamentally designed in a vacuum, especially before the developers had gameplay data and player feedback to work with. Add that the art team seems to have most or all character themes planned out in advance, meaning that we really are getting an incomplete version of the game that has to wait for story progression before certain pieces of the puzzle can be available (Mika, will you be Mondstadt's 4-star specialty-finder? If so, you're way too late to the party), AND add that Genshin is clearly more dedicated to its long-term playerbase so that inducting new people almost becomes an afterthought . . . and I can plainly see why their gameplay is so haphazard in quality. The result is incredibly inefficient and really hinders that their Loving messages get through to their broad and supposed-to-be eagerly-listening audience . . . . . . which is deeply ironic. Honestly, forgetting that gameplay experience is the defining trait of the artistic medium known as "videogames" doesn’t do them any favors.

I'd like to think that we should take that interview with a grain of salt though. They didn't specifically say that they have no plans on adding endgame content, only that they are not gonna make something similar to spiral abyss. Looking at Honkai, if genshin has a similar system then they would have to make every character and bosses from then on to powercreep the older ones just to keep gameplay interesting, which imo is more predatory than what genshin has to offer atm. That's my take on it. (Sorry for bad English, not my first language to learn.)

I like how you made the comparison with pokemon cos that's how i compared them as well. To me the root of so many problems is actually the artifact system. my guess is that mhy looked at summoner's war and decided that since that's where content creators just endlessly grind on, that's going to get them their play time kpi. But one of design road blocks in making challenging content is the disparity of account strengths and therefore relative difficulty. And this is caused by the damage fluctuation caused by the artifact system. Its not easy to make content that "scales" to player accounts because knowing what to scale to is complex. But wanting to make 1 content to fit this wide of a fluctuation is just an uphill task. For me end game to play is something that i want. but i can understand why its not easy to even start to choose a format. Then again not like mhy didn't make that problem for themselves. So im looking forward to how they slowly work themselves out of this. I've seen some players who tried honkai want something like the Elysian realm as a genshin endgame. But this thing took honkia years worth of permanant and event content put up and taken down to finally have. Before that it was a literal endless tower grind. climbed to 150+ floor from scratch each round was honestly painful after 4-5 times. But the problem here is that the difficulty is easier to do. Because damage output is is predictable. unlike genshin where if you make content based on c0 r1 5star limited characters on either 800 em or 60/120 crit. you will see 2 very different camps: some ppl who only have 50/100 mighht not even have started artefact grinding long enough to reach there (i've seen 30cr). on another end, 70/220. Add to the more complex damage calculator with multipliers, differece magnifies. So all these combat and challenge events i thiink are just ot collect data to do better descision making. Then again, i don't see any harm in genshin letting us have the prototypes for more than 1 event duration before taking it down for the drawing board

Reward progression doesn't even come close to the rate at which the roster is increasing, and that's to say nothing of the difficulty/endgame motivation to strengthen a variety of characters. Yes, a lot has changed in the game, but on a day to day basis, it feels like nothing has changed. For an action rpg, there's an awful lot of focus on non-combative elements, such as the addition of the teapot, fishing, and soon to be TCG. Hoyo seems determined to cater to the casual players, leaving more competitive players unsatisfied. The core issue of shallow content without repeatable endgame or increasing difficulty hasn't really changed.
@Kanethedragon
@Kanethedragon Год назад
Except they’re not even doing a good job at catering to casual players either (or rather people that aren’t day 1 casuals that grind). If I as a casual can’t even catch up to content without having to be forced to grind artifacts with other players because the World Level system forced me to be stuck at a difficulty range that outpaces my real progression, that IS NOT being good to their casual fans. It’s just most casuals that are excusing Mihoyo/Hoyoverse for this take are ones that have been around since the beginning, farmed their artifacts early, and now don’t need to do anything else to stay caught up. For all the players that quit the game during 1.0 and came back later or joined up in a later patch, Mihoyo basically gives us the middle finger by forcing us to be at X AR level in order to catch up on content knowing full damn well that the World Level system will force players to deal with harder regular and story content and not providing any avenue or tips for these players to be able to get or know what they need until it’s too late. Honestly, it really bothers me seeing the ignorant dedicated playerbase spout these lies that the game is fine for casuals as a form of criticism/exoneration for Mihoyo when it isn’t, it absolutely is not. Uh sorry for the unhinged wall of text, that just got me heated. But anyhow, it’s more or less a shame that this is the case because even despite all this, I do still like Genshin for what it does right, such as the lore, worldbuilding, story (to an extent but it’s improving), and characters and I want to like the game more as a casual player as I’ve since given up being a dedicated one, but I’m literally at a point where I can’t do anything but pick up rocks as the main interactive part of the game, which is the combat, just isn’t a fun experience for me and overall I would be fine with the game if it didn’t have/force any combat at all for the experience at this point. I love my fair share of Visual Novels and other purely story-based games, and while I do like farming style casual games, I’m more inclined to titles like Rune Factory than I am to Story of Seasons or Stardew Valley because I also like having some combat features in more interactive titles and RF generally has well-designed combat and balancing, something that Genshin is sorely lacking.

Qiqi carried you early in the game and Barbara used to have a charming husky voice. Also, the camera placement used to set on the rear or at the back of your character, hence interfering with fights and aimed shot used to be hard to do in mobile. Zhongli used to have a shield that breaks after a few hits from hilichurls and he hits like a wet noodle then a buff came after players were disappointed with his sub performance.

I agree with your points about what should be improved, but I disagree on how you mention that "there is no point in getting new players if they don't stick around for very long" (13:24). From what I could see, you're just guessing that people are actually stopping to play because of those issues, right? I couldn't find actual numbers, let alone the reasons on why an average player will stop playing and never return. Player retention is a "problem" in every game, and I believe there is literally no game out there that can keep their player base only growing or stable everyday for years. People start and stop playing games for any reasons. And even though I can understand and agree how permanent content could fix a lot of the issues that we see, I believe Genshin's whole purpose is to retain the player base with Events and the updates with new regions and, in my opinion, that's not horrendous. It's a valid approach, if they have the resources for that. Also, I believe the whole philosophy behind those "mario party" minigames events are "let's deliver the widest of variety of game experience and see what people like" and, personally, I think that's fun. Every update we have events related to the core mechanic (being exploration and/or combat), also events with something different, like tower defense, hide n seek, mixing drinks or managing a shop. Not to mention the events where they focus on story as well, which is a great reason for someone to come back to the game and see that extra bit about their favorite character. In my opinion, even though these don't "fix" the problems, I don't think they were meant to fix, they were meant to retain the player base. I remember you saying about how some events cause FOMO, which is another problem, but I still think that's more about how the players handle any system than a fault on the game. Things that are "limited-time only" are pretty common IRL, and there is no real "penalty" in missing thoses limited-only things. It's only a problem if the person wants to HAVE EVERYTHING AND CAN'T MISS ANYTHING, which is a mindset problem, imo.

I'm honestly in the same bought. I love storytelling in games and am no stranger to long-spanning dialogue cutscenes through JRPGs and CRPG dialogue trees, but there's just something much more tiresome about the dialogue in Genshin sometimes, and I think it's that there's so little actual combat or exploration in story events compared to dialogue so it just gets tiresome. Not to mention at times it feels like there's a lot more being said than is necessary and even times where the dialogue feels outright pointless or bloated. This is more of an issue with side quests and in between stories more than major stories quests though to be honest, but they can have that problem at times too. Events and Hangouts especially are really bad about this since it's ultimately just characters re-meeting and talking half the time, and at times the characters even seem caricaturized more than usual by playing up their 'quirk' trait more than usual. Events in general I feel lead to their own problems or themselves highlight issues. It's also kind of the opposite issue to games that don't update enough - it seems like an event hasnt even ended before they drop like 3 new ones so it just feels endless.

A little 20 minutes everyday for fun and wait for tomorrow for something new. They believe that "endgame content" equals "having something to do" but since we already have something to do every patch, there's no need for endgame because you always have a reason to play the game in their eyes. New content every five weeks regardless of whoever it's targeted towards is already steep hill for them to consistently provide to be fair, but it's not like they don't have the resources to funnel some of that money and manpower towards something the people that pay them have been asking for instead of a very pretty mini-game that'll disappear in a few weeks. The only saving grace that I able to finish 90% of the game is because I have a day off that I can spend upward of 7 hours to play Genshin. And some don't have that. The anxiety the Dev talk about is the stretch of content and the time the average player with a job is force to do with the game. Not the reaction you have in the game. in light of China's mentality of encouraging people to not game too much (encouraging school-age children to focus on education, social/extracurricular groups, and developing skills/hobbies that aren't gaming), it makes a lot of sense that genshin doesn't put too much endless content. The way that Genshin is designed allows people (not just kids) to not worry about their account too much and not have anxiety when logged off, and I think it's a good thing. A decade ago in China, the last time I visited, there was a big problem with wayward young people (not just students) just slumming it out at internet cafes, playing MMORPGs (which in my head, are lifestyle games) and nothing else in their lives. I have played and lived the mmorpg lifestyle before (tera and archeage) but it's really unsustainable and, no shade to people who can continue doing that and enjoy it longterm, but personally my mental health and social anxiety became very bad during that time... I can understand why this kind of mechanic (endless content combined with FOMO or anxiety that you can't keep competitive if you take a break) to keep playerbase hooked might be seen as something to avoid. I would honestly be upset if Genshin turned into that kind of "lifestyle" game. I've taken several hiatuses off of Genshin and when I come back, I do feel like I missed out on some nice things like event rewards and constant trickle of primos, but ultimately I don't feel super pressured in the same extreme way compared to MMORPGS. However, I think the developers are aware of the western gamer crowd's demands for more content. I think that them shortening their development cycle from 6 weeks per patch to 5 weeks is their compromise for their western audience. Now, if Mihoyo/Hoyoverse would allow us to spend resources or even primos to reduce rng in artifact grinding... (wishful thinking)

Because they release endless events which almost never repeat, with some parts of lore in it, so if you missed it you can actually lack some vital information to the upcoming quests and other events. Like who does it? Im not even talking about all those amounts of primogems and some rare things you will miss. And some of those events are just so long? I couldnt even touch base game quests at that point, I simply had no time to do anything but that summer event.

You have a fair point, except genshin is not a good example of a healthy 1-hour per day game. The "healthy" part in Genshin may be considered exploring the story/world for a short while, then logging off. What most people do instead as daily gameplay is comissions and consuming resin. These are purely artificial and mind-numbing activities that offer no intrinsic value (except maybe feeling good about crossing something of your daily to-do list). Many are motivated only by primogems. Most of them also get anxiety over missing a banner, losing a 50/50, farming for weeks only to get Qiqi'd (happened to me), and may end using real money to get the character. Dare I say that I think Genshin was crafted deliberately to induce only a mild amount of anxiety that can be kept in check much easier than other addictive games (like MMORPGS) and is more potent because it attracts more casual players and keeps them hooked for longer. You can get rid of the anxiety easily by logging for 30 mins daily, so you may think it's a good deal, that's why some people say it doesn't feel like a chore, yet others still feel the FOMO. Some people just don't feel like playing the limited time event in the coming weeks and know that the content (and the rewards) are never coming back, so they feel forced to play. I made lots of assumptions in this paragraph, but I think I made a valid point.

So far (I started in 3.0), I’ve been enjoying the game a lot − to the point I play a probably unreasonable number of hours each day − but I think it’s partly because I mostly ignore the gacha. I just do pulls when I can and play with what I get, which has worked out just fine. I do fear that the grinding could get tedious at one point, but I mostly play for the exploration and stories anyway, meaning I don’t feel like I have to spend all my resin every time. I’ve barely touched the Spiral Abyss too. And if I run out of stuff to do… Well I’ll stop playing for a while and come back later. I do agree that the artifact system is… not ideal, which is weird because the stigmata system in Honkai Impact works perfectly well. And of course the limited banner system is absolute bull if you want to pull a specific character or weapon.

As someone who started playing 2 weeks after launch, legit when there was like nothing online saying anything about this game, it has gotten a lot better than I thought it would get. But yeah the one thing that ruins the game the MOST for me and I'm pretty sure everyone else is the artifact system. While most other things have their flaws, they become slight frustrations in the grand scheme, nothing more. The artifact system is what probably got a lot of people to stop playing genshin, as it is so ungodly random that no casual player can be bothered. If they fixed that, and add some decent improvements to end game content, this game would go from an 8 to an easy 9.5 game in my eyes. It has the potential to be one of my favourite games of all time, but not without fixing the stuff that's been broken since the start

Its been 10 months since I started genshin and I am very satisfied with genshin other than that I wished that some events we were permanent like that domain event where we can build our own domain and that event where we hide or catch others hiding, I forgot the names of the events😓. Recently devs said that there will be no endgame other than spiral abyss but I don't even care about endgame. The reason I started genshin was because of the characters and open world.

Okay but what are you using those characters for? do you just mindless do quests without leveling your characters? you cant since progression is halted if you don't ascend your character essentially making you prone to engage in combat. which is hence the reason why players who focus on said combat are just sad that there's so much wasted potential. I'm not downplaying what you personally enjoy but, others enjoy the other aspects of the game that haven't been delivered since the launch of the game. What was said during the video essentially makes farming, grinding, and ascending characters pointless if the devs themselves refuse to reward players for time and money investment. Genshin has become a cesspool of mario party mini games when it could of been so much more.

I hang on playing through the headache nations of Inazuma and Sumeru. Both nations are hostile. You can go around a corner without someone wanting to kill your active character. That's why I love Mondstadt. It feels like home, a place that's not hostile. Plus The Golden Apple Archipelago is like Christmas, it's so much fun. Spiral Abyss is a constant headache. They had a good event in 2.7 that could've replaced the Spiral Abyss.

I think they try to keep bringing in new players, that's why a new Set of chars make even more sense, instead to keep up for older reruns. I can't run 12-3 Abbys for myself, mostly because of my few chars to choose from and my bad artifacts, but I play less then 220 days, so I don't mind to much. But I feel everyone who is playing from day 1 that those are disappointed. Why not make a PvP Tower, why not raise Abbys to 15? Why not bring Endgame content? It would not hurt, even I'm not part of it now.

mihoyo is doing what a company does when there is no direct competition, just improve it little by little even tho we know they can improve much better. this is why i want wuthering waves and other similar projects to be successful.

there is one attempt, tower of fantasy. though I think it kinda moved to another space different than genshin and is making it's own identity now. so genshin still currently have no competition.

Wuthering Waves, while in theory can be a direct competitor to GI, but based on the dev's history and the gameplay showcases so far, seems to be more of a sweaty tryhard game than chilling experience in GI. So I honestly think it will not take any of GI's targeted audience lol

Day 1 FTP AR60 player here... I have to say it's gotten pretty annoying after all this time yeah... I agree with the part where you say they should prioritize more on the permanent content side of things and less on the events and the teapot... This way the game can be taken more seriously as an action/open world rpg instead of a gacha or party game. The latest article regarding "Not expanding on the permanent side of things because it stresses the casual audience" was also pretty disappointing.

I also hope that the game will improve upon its Ubisoft game design formula, with the quests being walls of dialogue, fetch quests etc, idk I hoped they would show more and tell less Even if they probably never will because Honkai Star Rail has the same issue
