Grimburg Less Lethal is setting the standard right now. They listen to what people want. Small, sleek, and powerful is in the most demand. Gone are the days of big bulky launchers. Granted this isn't a small launcher by firearm standards but it's a nice step in the right direction.

When I attended the Chicago Police Academy about 30 years ago it was estimated that only 2.5 rounds were fired during each encounter. It is my professional opinion that if you are in a protracted gun fight, you won’t survive firing more than a couple rounds unless you find cover.

Nice testing Jon. Kurt with Grimburg is an awesome person. I mentioned to you previously of my business dealings with them. I recall that there is a different spring which can be provided for the Gavle to properly handle pepper type rounds. I've never used them so I'm not positive. There was also a heavier projectile that Grimburg sold when the first Gavle was released weighing close to 10 g. Kurt tested that in that Gavle and I believe it was achieving over 40 Joules. Again, thanks for your continued testing and input for the less lethal community.

Remember these launchers at minimum, are really to deter, distract, and delay a bad guy so that a victim can break contact and try to escape the danger. The Gavle gives you five heavy shots per Co2 cartridge, so even if it had a magazine to change, you also still have to change out the empty Co2 cartridge then load another fresh one in. Realistically I don't see the average citizen getting into a sustained and extended fight.

Nice review but the demo on the Grimburg site shows two different springs depending on kinetic vs pepper ball rounds. The tactical advantage of a higher velocity and joules of energy does make the Grimburg superior to its competitors for that, but there are other factors to consider. Price is much higher. They don't have ammo clips, so five shots is it in an engagement. You can't reload in the field. They don't really caution you in the product manual about a pepper round breaking up in the launcher, so that is a safety concern. They also need to finish writing and providing a complete manual with all necessary safety and maintenance information. They say they will get around to that, and also providing a list of acceptable third party CO2 cartridges. Also, you can't leave the CO2 in your launcher in a hot car, so readiness could be an issue for all these CO2 powered LTL weapons.
@AlternateArmsSD
@AlternateArmsSD День назад
@@user-bo6rd8vv6e Yea indeed. The spring swap for the pepper rounds caught me a bit off guard but I’d like to try using that spring with a moisture of kinetic and pepper rounds. That’s coming. The price is higher, I suspect, because they are a smaller company and have to mill and manufacture them themselves. I suspect that the price may come down in the future as they grow and expansion continues. The lack of a magazine is a bit jarring but some of the best performing launchers don’t. (IE the HDP50) I believe they are working on a new model though that might alleviate that concern. We shall see :) I’ve tested the C02 in extreme heat situation and have never seen any issues myself. Cold, on the other hand, is another story altogether. :) Have a great week!

@@AlternateArmsSD Thank you for a thoughtful response to my concerns. Made in USA attracted me in anticipation of superior quality and reliability, but we're getting into the price range for a real Glock when you add up all the extras. A person could buy a PCP air pistol and use a wide assortment of available projectiles without a CCL or permit if they wanted play with potentially lethal penetration and extended range. My take on LTL is pepper rounds outside the house and kinetic inside. But a basic home defense shotgun can fire birdshot or rock salt if you're at home and you don't intend to kill and intruder. Also, you could go to Taser, or bear spray. Reliability, proportionality of response according to the location and situation all need to be considered. Cost vs value is a big factor, even if you prefer to buy US made.

From the Grimburg website, they offer their own pepper balls.... 10% CS + 2% OC KinetiCS projectiles have the power of a 6 gram kinetic projectile PLUS, the most potent combination of irritants available. Even with thicker plastic on their irritant projectiles, there is confusion about using a different spring depending on kinetic vs irritant. I sent an inquiry to Grimburg for clarification on this, but I'm not thrilled that I had to dig into this question rather than finding a complete tutorial or a complete and downloadable manual for their various launchers, configurations, ammo choices and cautions - particularly if you want to use third party rounds. Somebody with law enforcement experience and legal liability knowledge needs to offer training video on when to use pepper vs kinetic situationally, and what exposure you might have if you embed one of those 8 gram rounds in someone's face. Also, I'm pretty concerned at this point about having a pepper round explode during launch in this device. That would benefit the attacker not the person hoping to defend themself.
@AlternateArmsSD
@AlternateArmsSD День назад
@@user-bo6rd8vv6e Weeellll I’ve revised that video quite a bit and that depends on a couple of factors. Primarily the wind and distance. Given the powerful “cone shaped” expulsions of the ruptured round that is might be quite effective at short range (assuming you were down wind of it.) 8grams coming out of these is brutal albeit kinetic or pepper rounds. A face or head shot within 10 feet could be devastating. That being said, if you are in a situation where it is necessary, then mitigating the threat is the ultimate goal giving you time to escape. I do agree on a good manual and instructional video though. Perhaps I should volunteer to help them with that.

Thanks brother, oh man, you’re making me make tough decisions here :-) OK, strictly from a power standpoint, there is no equal to the gavel out of the box. The thing is just brutal. I would like some improvements on the loading mechanism for the ammunition, and I suspect that a future version will have some sort of punch cap to puncture system. I don’t think we’re going to be going down the road of a full magazine like the Byrna does, but I’m not overly concerned about that. I think for EDC, I would probably use the Byrna as it’s a little easier to conceal. However, for something in my car, or for home protection, I would definitely look to the gavel. Also, remember that Grimburg is constantly improving and updating their models. I suspect we’re going to see a lot more cool stuff coming out of these guys.

I was talking with someone about the gavle- the power is just unmatched for something that can be concealed. We were joking that using this would be like stabbing somebody with a brick. Lol. I know curt is very adament about the twist to puncture being totally fine and not being magazine fed about the fbi statistics, but i dont think it can really be argued that having a magazine and a quick pierce wouldnt be better even if just for peace of mind. Split seconds count and IF you do need a 6th shot for whatever reason (most people arent trained and WILL miss shots on a moving target trying to attack you, especially if theres more than just one attacker) it would just be nice to have. But for less lethal, lets say its between this, a byrna, and a salt s2 and you gotta pick one, and they all work exactly as intended, id put my life on this. Concealing a byrna le currently, swapping to the gavle the moment it comes in the mail and i can test fire it with a couple mags.

@LessLethalOptions-82323
@LessLethalOptions-82323 3 месяца назад
At Home you use it as a backup. On the street you need to use pepper spray (any powerful launcher) to get time to move away, draw, twist and fire. Robbers are going to run after the first hit. There is no percentage for them to go after you. The Byrna first shot without charging with safety on, will get you cut, even if you can get it out in less than 2 seconds. The bang to charge S2 will be faster than taking the charged Byrna safety off. On the street the launcher choices should be among the Gavel and TCP/FSC, with pepper spray, or, the S2, with a sub 2 second draw-fire-and hit capability. Great product. A better one is coming with their bang-to-charge model eventually coming out. TBD

I believe the reason these numbers are this high is because these are the new JulV3. They don’t have copper. They have steel and are better bore matched. The Julv3 are .686 The new solstice coming out in 2025 wiil get 44j. Great test John. Thanks Grimburg made those new JulV3 with the steel powder instead of copper in the old JulV2. Because they work with the new magnetic detent

John, Sean Kempter used the Grimburg JulV2 in the Salt Supply S2. Grimburg discontinued the JulV2. But I believe those new JulV3 Grimburg sent you will be better bore matched for the S2. They are the closer in size to the S2 barrel than the JulV2. Maybe you can do a test with those JulV3 in the S2. To see the joules it’s putting out. Also Grimburg does have a pepperball made by Duke. They have steel powder in them. They are 6g. Thanks and awesome testing

Awesome video! I'm surprised there are not that many gavle videos out there give the launcher's insane performance. Are these serialized? I'm leary buying one of these and carrying it out in public. I'm more confident using my EP or my TRP because LEOs know what they are. The gavle is a borderline ghost gun if it cant be traced back to the manufacturer.

@@dta6446 we are aware of that, but you just know cops and prosecutors will use that "no serial #" bs against us. I read in a FB group post that someone used a gavle in public and the cops confiscated the launcher. Kurt had to talk to the pigs and explain what the gavle was all because it doesn't have a SN and the pigs didn't know about grimburg.

Yeah, the biggest issue is size. Even with perfect engineering, the .68 round is big. Also, you have the limitations of the 12 (or in this case 16) gram C02 cart. They have a tremendous amount of power but limited capacity. These were never designed to be a replacement for a firearm, they are another option.

@AlternateArmsSD Thank you I agree you are one of the rare few utubers that appear to actively reply to comments that is much appreciated. However the post after this in quotes appears to has been either removed or somehow made invisible. Just bringing this to your attention and interested in knowing how or why my comment is invisible or deleted. Here’s the comment I made --- “Very much appreciative of your videos. And glad your experience with the gavel was a positive one. Sadly my results with it were very poor and would never feel comfortable or safe trusting it in a less lethal encounter due to it leaking all the gas after one or 2 shoots. Supposedly had it repaired and returned and did same thing. Then got exchange and had same problems using up all the bag of co2s grimeburg sold each time. I've given up on it. Now I have a useless $500+ paperweight. Sorry to post negative experience with it but people have right to know there are and have been a bunch of problems with it and there are videos and many posts conveying the same issues from quite a few gavel buyers trying it. Of course some post have been abruptly removed and the OP’s were banned from the grimeburg less lethal facebook forum page. Which to me is extremely petty especially without any warnings or explanation. Because of that also I lost all respect for the grimeburg principals (won’t say any names but its known who it is) who I used to revere for his contribution and development of LL products, but that was the last straw for me. You got a great channel and do great reviews and will continue watching them as an avid subscriber and customer to your website. I hope I am not banned for simply sharing the truth in what I witnessed and experienced. Look forward to your next review video.”

Sorry, not even close. We have the design but we haven't prototyped it. And we probably need to do a year of testing. The current wist to pierce method does not fail. Magazines are less reliable than the current design. For the weight, size, and statistically the Gavle launcher makes more sense.
