Happy New Year!! I started driving electric in 2020, when I changed a petrol Honda Jazz to a Renault Zoe. At the time, I was unable to get a home charger for my car because of bad estate management. I’m now awaiting a home charger but still have to use public charging stations. My two nearest are M&S Food in Hoddesdon and Tesco in Cheshunt.

My prediction is that more and more CPOs will embrace dynamic pricing in some form (spot pricing and/or time of day) to shift demand and to compete with Tesla who already do this. In order to recoup their installation and maintenance costs, CPO's will always have to charge more than the equivalent domestic rate (and people never factor in their own charger installation costs into their per unit price). But if CPOs can arrange time of day pricing with their electricity suppliers then they too can offer cheaper overnight charging. In fact there are two factors at play here, the cost of the electricity and scarcity pricing on the charging infrastructure itself. So people who depend on public charging will then have a bit more choice - charge off peak and it will be cheaper, and possibly charge when it's windy and spot prices are lower/negative and it will be cheaper still. Electroverse are already starting to do this with their plunge pricing on Ionity and Osprey networks. This is far more sustainable than imposing price caps which will just mean that the infrastructure won't get built because business cases don't work, so then we all lose out because we won't have a decent public charging network.

Brilliant, two cats in this video. My MG 5 has failed to charge at the Tesla chargers in Banbury and Uxbridge. Not sure if it's the car, the charger or a problem with card authentication in the app. Is there a way to get customer support when changing on a super charger?
@ModernHeroes

There’s a history of issues with some MG models and superchargers - guess it’s the MG5 and mk1 ZS that are mostly affected. At one point it was suggested Tesla had actually taken measures to stop them charging there due to incompatibility but I’m not sure if this is more than Internet hearsay. MG4 seems unaffected. The thing that I find ignorant about the whole EV movement, is the lack of standardization and unity. *The fact that only certain cars can use certain chargers. *If you charge a non-Tesla, at a Tesla charger, you're going to get a lesser rate than a Tesla. *There is no power/rate standard. Whoever installs the charger can make you pay whatever they want. *You don't know what it'll cost you, until you're already plugged in.

Not if you take a Tesla sub out you get the same rate, standardization that will be CCS2, that's the price for investing in supercharger network and I know exactly how much they charge Gridserve are 79p Fastned 69p etc etc.
@jonathantaylor1998
@jonathantaylor1998 6 месяцев назад
Totally agree on the lack of standardisation - successive Governments have assumed that market competition would prevail... but, we're still waiting...! However, your 4 points are not entirely accurate - but, that's completely understandable, given just how much anti-EV rhetoric gets pumped out by the British media day-in, day-out... So... #1. Apart from the Nissan Leaf, all other EVs can use all (non-Tesla) public charge points. All Tesla Superchargers used to be wholly for use by Tesla owners - it was a key reason why so many people bought in to the Tesla brand. However, slowly but surely, Tesla are opening up their incredible network to other, non-Tesla cars - which is great for the whole EV market. #2. A non-Tesla car will pay slightly more pence/kWh than a Tesla owner would pay, even if they use the Tesla App. That's kinda to be expected and still gives Tesla a USP for their cars. #3. Sadly, yes... unless market competition finally kicks in, which Gary here has suggested may start to happen at certain Tesla vs non-Tesla charger sites. #4. All charge point Apps list the pence/kWh cost for all charge points, so with careful planning, an EV driver can pick & choose where to charge at the cheapest cost. Hope that's helped a bit... 🙂
@grahamleiper1538
@grahamleiper1538 6 месяцев назад
I think that as Tesla open up more charger locations to non Tesla other charger companies will have to drop prices locally to get any return on their investment. Look at Tottenham supercharger, it's busy all the time. An unused ultra rapid isn't making money for anyone. People already drive across town to save 2p a litre, 30+p/kWh is a no-brainer. In Scotland, Gretna, Abington, Edinburgh (both), Perth, and Aberdeen are Tesla only. Only new Tesla location in Scotland in last two years is Harthill. DNO connections will remain a massive issue.

Do you think we'll see another L6e that's better than the Ami, in the UK? Or even an L7e? At sane prices I mean, not weird grey imports or insanely overpriced stuff like the Microlino? Does the Dogood Zero (aka Ark Zero) exist? Will we see any channels be able to drive a street legal one? Will the Squad Solar or Silence 04 make it here? Will anyone do any of these vehicles in RHD or are they wildly incompetent 'engineers' who find that difficult? Yeah, I can see why this didn't make your top five. While I'm keen to see quadricycles make a big impact, no pun intended, I don't actually think the companies making them are all that serious about manufacturing, hence the prices and the slow production rates. Probably best to just wait until the end of 2024 and review what happened, then have a shred of optimism tbh.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. The Spring won't suit everyone, as it's actually smaller/narrower than a Fiat 500.... @rogerstarkey5390
@rogerstarkey5390 6 месяцев назад
Here we go with the "Internet armchair" predictions. . Check the data before making predictions. . What's the density of Sodium Ion packs at the moment? I mean gravimetric and volumetric.... The spec for both the Northvolt (VW?) and CATL Sodium Ion cells seems to indicate ±160Wh/kg at cell level. Compare that to the Tesla 2170 at ±270 Wh/kg.... . Translation? A Sodium Ion pack providing the same charge capacity as a Nickel based 2170 pack will be 68% heavier (cell weight). Let's say it's slightly more space efficient, being kind we might say 50% heavier at pack level? The vehicle has to move that weight. . Difficult to find Volumetric density, but again, it's lower for the Sodium cells. . Result.... You need a dimensionally larger, less energy dense pack for a sodium ion pack. It's not (certainly not at the moment) a "Game changer" for charging or range. . Cost? That's probably what VW is hoping will save them. . The problem The smaller the vehicle, the larger the percentage of total vehicle weight that's taken up by the pack. (Gravimetric density) . But also.... If the volumetric cell density is down, you can't get as much capacity from the physical space available, so *range* suffers. . Double whammy. . What you're (probably) going to see is larger cars and/ or shorter range. . The trick is actually to fit a pack with a HIGHER density cell in a SMALLER vehicle. . Sodium seems best suited to larger vehicles, buses, etc, and storage ATM. . Here's where you shout "but they're doing it!!!" . Look for the *data* Look for mention of "hybrid packs".

A couple of thoughts (rather than predictions). EV taxation will become a big issue, particularly in the run up to the next general election. Road fund licence, VAT on charging network prices, ULEZ areas etc. More car sharing / rental options of EVs, particularly in cities where Ami etc are great (a bit like Boris bike hire). Still poor residuals, owing to pace of innovation (mainly battery - ie range and weight improvements) making 2nd hand quickly obsolete. Company car tax pressures are currently causing market distortions, with the 100% writing down allowances for new cars, and the BIK rates, causing problems with the new -2nd hand split. More pressure on some of the legacy ICE manufacturers, with some of the new disrupters finally coming to market at a scale in 2024 (eg Canoo, x-bus) and the march of the Chinese manufacturers. Bankruptcy of one or more major Chinese EV brand, with no suppport for owners. Bankruptcy of at least one of the major legacy ICE brands. Continued anti-EV press, funded by bigOIL. Charging desert areas rapidly reducing (eg Wales, Scotland, Yorkshire), but without proper depth of supply. Complaints of queues at the charger network, as it won’t keep up with demand and the roll out of new EVs

@kensweet6022
@kensweet6022 6 месяцев назад
Given Modern Heroes' figures of 53,029 charging devices in the UK over 30,858 locations, that gives an average of 1.72 outlets per location. I don't know if the 53,029 included the ultra charger numbers but if not, even adding the figure of 4,505 ultra chargers to the 53,029 non ultra ones = 57,534 divide this by the 30,858 locations and it still only equates to an average of 1.86 outlets per location. I can't imagine the queues to recharge, especially during holiday periods, given even maybe a 30 minute charge time to possibly give enough range to get to the next charge station! With 8,365 petrol/diesel stations, most of which have upwards of 8 pumps and many have more than 12 pumps, at maybe 5 minutes spent at each pump to gas up, I'll stick with my 7yr old 2.0L diesel estate which gives me a range of around 600+ miles with a four adults and a loaded rear end, on a single tank!

Happy New Year! I think the cost of EV charging will increase as the government loses revenue from fuel duty on fossil fuels, and VAT will be increased to 20% on the electricity used. The government will continue to block imports of small city EV's that come in at around the £10k price point. The war against private transport in Labour controlled areas will be stepped up, and become intolerable if they somehow manage to get into government.

I Predict great news for everyone in the UK if we all get EVs in 2024 including Buses 🚌 Trucks 🚚 Cars🛻 and Motorbikes 🏍 then at the current capacity of the national grid including importing Electricy the poor person at the back of the Que regardless of how many chargers are available would have to wait approximately 15 Years to charge just once. Giving them a range of 100-300Miles before joining the back of the Que for another 15 year's wait for there turn of getting some fresh Electric juice from our National Grid. Make you realise how stupid our Government is 😂😂😂😂. But we all know there Thick and corrupt and only ever think of themselves. 😭🤬🤬😡😡

ROFL. Meanwhile, in the real world we're driving about no problem at all, charging at home, and it's costing us pennies.

@@MrDead1975 I assume you "did your own research" there. Literally know of people who can charge at home with non-compliant parking arrangements not getting grants, and that was when the grants were still a thing, so a few years ago now. Only grants available now are for rented accommodation and you'll still need suitable off road parking to install a charger at. There are no grants to buy off-road parking. Home owner grants stopped first half of 2022.

Absolute nonsense. The National Grid have already stated - on numerus occasions - that they do not anticipate any issues. But hey, what do the people who actually run the grid know about running the grid, eh? The National Grid were one of the organisations who lobbied the Government to bring *forward* the original 2035 ban on the sale of new ICE cars and vans to 2030. Shell UK were another...... In fact Shell UK outlined their plans to cut production of petrol and diesel by up to 40% on the lead up to 2030, in their last business report.....

@@MrDead1975 How do people who live in flats manage to fill up with petrol now? Do they have a petrol pump at their flat? Or do they need to go somewhere else to fill up? There are no "grants" for off-road parking I'm aware of. Where did you hear this nonsense? Was it from Fat George, down the Pig & Whistle? If you honestly feel it's true, you'd better get an EV, and apply for the "grant" then, hadn't you?

You missed one. That the Macmaster lee will produce another 40 ev videos all saying ev are not the future. we I have to agree on that any one buying a Taycan, this car is NOT the future ev with Poor under 3 miles to a unit are NOT the future. There is a very easy way to put down anev that is as bad as the taycan for efficiency and that is to drive it anywere. The only time when prices will come down is when supermarkets get there finger out and provide the ev driver with cheaper charging like they do for petrol drivers. supermarkets are the number 1 for supplying fuel so whay are they NOT number 1 supplying ev charging at the same discounted prices.

I can't help but marvel at the sheer hypocrisy of that man. He constantly bleats and rants about electric cars being no good for long trips - while driving all over Britain in an EV while saying it. You decide..... And yes, he'll continue churning out his videos to satisfy the needs of his audience. He learned long ago how to play them like a faithful old piano, and they in turn provide him with a healthy income via the clicks he gets on his site....

He just did a video were he puts down all the comments people have put forward as a joke, he ask for people to correct him if he is wrong yet does not what to see that the so called fact he used were untrue. some people thinking about getting an EV are put off due to false info. He must be earning a good wedge from the videos bigging up to the EV haters. and attacking the EV people who know the truth and try to tell him that what he is saying is wrong

@@davidsworld5837The whole point/ kingpin of his channel is to create *controversy* and elicit extreme reactions, which have the useful benefit of meaning the income from his channel keeps-a-rolling in...... I think of him as the Norman Wisdom of electric cars - minus the wisdom. I believe there have now been a number of complaints to RU-vid regarding his content and the methods he uses to present it.... He often makes a point of stating that something he says, or an experience he has, is "proof" or "evidence" that EV's *must* be this, that or the other. I did make a point of advising him that any opinion or statement he made on his channel is just that - his opinion - and nothing more. Needless to say, it got deleted.

Beat me too it. Yeah he plays the anti EV card very well, all the way to the bank. It's a bit like to old top gear scenario where they were the same every challenge, he knows the recipe and is wringing it out for all it's worth. The audience is blind to see that they're watching the same video over and over. I like his travel vlogs but don't watch the EV content, and I don't even own an EV.

Why would you get an EV... I don't understand why anyone would get such an inconvenient car.
@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh 6 месяцев назад
How about the convenience of being able to charge at home, for an 8th of the cost of using petrol, and without the inconvenience of *having* to drive to a petrol station to fill up, then getting financially rogered, paying one of the highest rates of fuel duty in the civilised World? Then there's smooth, almost silent drive, with instant torque from a standstill. Running costs of around 2p per mile, and servicing pricing at a 3rd of the cost of my last petrol car. On hot days or cold mornings, I can pre heat or pre cool the car interior while it's still plugged into the mains, so that when I get in to start my journey, the car is at the temperature I set. I only need to charge my car around every 8 to 9 days, and I tend to charge through the night, on off-peak rate, which costs around a 5th of the daytime rate. I don't find it inconvenient at all. Oddly, people around 130 years ago were saying "why would anyone ever need a motor car, when you can have a living breathing horse"? One day, oil will be no more. New ways of personal transportation will need to be devised and developed. It's called progress, and it happens whether we like it or not. We didn't move on from the Stone Age because we ran out of stones.....
