I’m sooo with Perri here. We all complain that the oscars don’t honor genre movies in their nominations, so why shouldn’t we pick them in our own lists? Why isn’t a slapstick comedy or a gory slasher eligible if they’re the movies the brought us the most joy?

Of the lists provided, Scott actually had 3 films that would contend on my list (C'mon C'mon, The Green Knight and A Hero, although I agree with Jeff that The Worst Person in the World was better). This was the episode I've been waiting for! Added a bunch of things to my watchlist. My top 10 from last year so far, still have like another 50 movies to see so this is bound to change a bit. Honorable mention: Limbo , Shang-Chi, Little Fish, The Suicide Squad, and Dance of the Forty One. 1 - The Mitchells vs The Machines - I think this is basically a perfect film, and one that stayed with me all year. 2 - The Forgotten Battle - Really fantastic Dutch war film on Netflix that like no-one watched but I loved it. 3- Riders of Justice - Another fantastic Dutch movie. Mads Mikkelsen is amazing, charming cast, and script. 4- The Harder They Fall - One of the years best casts, so much style, great action, lots of heart. 5 - Coda - By this point everyone should know how fantastic CODA is, best feel good movie of the year with my favorite leading performance of the year. 6- C'mon C'mon - Just watched it this week and fell in love. So full of hope, love and growth. 7- The Hand of God - The 1st half is perfect. So charming and funny, 2nd half still great but not so much fun. 8- Pig - Subverted just about every expectation I had. Cage is brilliant, and the script is wonderful. 9- Eternals - Unpopular opinion but I loved this film. Beautifully shot, incredible action, some of the MCU's best and most compelling performances. 10- The Summit of the Gods - Another fantastic animated film that really worked for me. Loved the art style, loved the score, loved the story.

Perri, fellow CCA voter here. In 2003, my first year as a voter, I proudly used my #1 Best Actress nominating slot to vote for Angela Bettis in “May”. I knowingly threw away that vote, but have absolutely zero regrets! Been voting my heart ever since!

This best actress race is very similar to last years. Carey Mulligan like Kirsten Stewart were anointed the front runner in a divisive film that came up short. We get a shock golden globe win. Last year Andra Day, and this year Nicole Kidman. I have a feeling like Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain will win the SAG for a meaty role. But Colman will win the BAFTA and Oscar 4 years after her first win, just like it was four years after McDormand won for three billboards then Nomadland.

I recommend watching Drive My Car in the theatre if you can. The rhythms and pacing of the film is destined to be seen in a cinema where your entire focus is on the film and not on other distractions at home, and I promise you that you will be much more transfixed by the film watching it that way instead of on a screener. I highly recommend watching or rewatching this film in a theatrical setting if you have not.

i'm expecting a lot of Mass

I agree wholeheartedly about Alana Haim's performance in Licorice Pizza. For a first time actor/"non-actor" to come in and have that kind of poise, charm, vulnerability, and humor - she makes that movie what it is. Hell she might make it *more* that what it is. I know PTA wrote it for her and directed the hell out of the movie, and its shot beautifully. But Alana is at the center of it and makes the words on the page come to life. I think it would be a step too far for her to win it(but hey never say never), but I'll be more than sorely disappointed if she is not nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role this year. I know she's dedicated to her band but if this role is any indication I hope she can act again if the right film comes up, because she is legitimately talented as an actor. Of course, this isn't the most competitive year ever so I think she should get in. I do also agree that Emilia Jones' performance in CODA is special (and similarly is centerpiece of the film) and should probably win it.

Playing the game the way Perri did a movie I liked in 2021 that would be in my top ten that Nobody mentioned is Nobody. Very entertaining movie. I loved all the references to John Wick since I am a big fan of the first two movies of that franchise. Bob Odenkirk was excellent playing his part. Came out in March when almost no one was going to the theater. Obviously not a contender for an Oscar but one of my favorites of 2021.

I adored your list, Perri. I say always root for the underdogs up into the nominations. You love Mass, be team Mass all the way. I'm still rooting for Red Rocket. Hoping for at least a best actor nomination. Also, I have yet to see Malignant and by you bringing it up, it's on my watchlist.

Actually I am doing exactly this with a group of friends every year. It's kind of like our own award show and every year it's something I'm really looking forward to. To be clear, there isn't a single movie in Perri's Best Picture picks that would even be in contention for mine, but I respect her ballot because she approached the prompt in exactly the way she was supposed to imo. The exercise of "what would you nominate" is interesting because it celebrates diverse perspectives on what great filmmaking is, not because it rewards consensus. There's also a difference between asking what you would nominate and what you would VOTE for (which is where the gamesmanship can come in). If you honestly think a movie is great, then its absolutely worthy of nominating, whether you think it stands a chance/fits the profile or not. So whether I agree with the picks or not, I salute Perri for picking from the heart. Also, I totally disagree with Jeff about 2021 being a bad movie year imo. Might well be the best since 2016. Still have a decent amount to see and I've already had to cut a depressing amount of 4.5/5s from my top 10 on Letterboxd (waiting for Neon/A24/Netflix to hopefully add some more FYC screenings for Spencer, C'Mon C'Mon and Power of the Dog for starters). Even though I might not include some of Perri's personal favorites in my top 10, I still respect that she thinks they're deserving. Jeff unfortunately almost dismisses them entirely - which is how I think most of the Academy voters would feel as well. This is why there needs to be a change. Just vote for what you think the best movies are, regardless of indie, animated, blockbuster, etc.

Supporting Actress Dunst might pull a win against Debois. I think Dunst is likely to win the heart of her compatriots Others that will be nominated are: Ruth Nega, catriona balfe, marlee matlin. My heart aches for Ann Dowd Best Supporting Actor McPhee will win as i think Power of the Dog will win Best Picture, Director and Screenplay along with supporting actor & supporting actress , BUT i wanna see an upset from Troy Katsur as he is damn soooo affecting in Coda Completing my Best Supporting Actor list are Jared Leto for House of Gucci, Ben Affleck for Tender Bar and Bradley Cooper for Licorice Pizza
