Sodom was on the shores of the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea - actually a lake - has an extremely high salt content and as it dries leaves salt deposits on its shores of various shapes and sizes. Tour guides routinely point out ones that might have been "Lot's wife." There's no deep symbolism. It's just that the ignorant scribes who wrote that story lived in an area with unusual geological formations that they couldn't understand so they invented a miracle story to explain their origin. It got included in the bible along with dozens of other fairy tales with no historical basis whatsoever.

In fact, this is one of the ways God teaches us what we need to know in order to make good choices as believers. We can learn the easy way by knowing and obeying God’s Word, we can learn the hard way by suffering the consequences of our mistakes, or we can learn by watching others and “taking heed” from their experiences.
