@@dylanharrington744 "Im pretty sure it was 2 millions!!! .. There wouldnt even had been any viewers without Masvidal!! I mean who cares about all the real champions and titlefights there was.." Casual mindset of a Masvidal fan
Masvidal is the type of fighter that really grows on you. I didn't like Tony Ferguson at first,..but after you see what he does in there. You have to respect his personality. Same with Jorge, he definitely deserves star status.
@chang chang You sound like a casual.. Casuals were supporting Jorge and Tony.. Thats what made them popular after so many years but it looks like they already forgot Tony again.. We hadnt seen any type of guy comments since he was beaten by Justin
What did he do? Talked a bunch of shit, did not show up to the fight got dominated and than said to Usman no more need for shit talk.::. He’s not what y’all think....: if he won he woulda been talking all kinds of shit!
Masvidal story is that of the underdog and coming back from difficulties. He’s not an unstoppable force, he just believes in himself and that makes everyone believe in him.
People don't like Usman because they can't relate to him. Just by the PPV when someone you can relate to is fighting. Simple However, Masvidal sure is lobbying to rematch Usman......
@StocktonNative 209 crucified? Lmfao shut up and quit exaggerating because you don't like Masvidal. That wasn't a crucifixion. It was Usman doing what he does best by controlling Jorge with his insane wrestling. Neither one of them were anywhere close to being KO'd aka crucified.
Masvidal played his cards right and its paying off. His stock doesnt decrease and actually will proabbly increase. I know Colby has to be pissed..which leads up to a great matchup.
@Saint Germain thats what im saying, the guy hasnt fought since December and you still hear about him every day. im really interested to see the numbers after his next fight.
That is not a blockbuster in a time of pandemic, with pandemic you can't beat top 5, imagine if there is no pandemic, ppl would be busy going to work and watch other sports. SO I don't think this is impresssive And also he played it wrong, made a huge mistake in his career I think. FIrst he said it himself he wanted money of belt. I'm cool with that but then comes in 6 day notice, and then laughs throught the entire fight as if he doesn't care. He lost his reputation in fact it will be not for long as long as he still under BMF,
@Pickledickwhitechocaleteballs Deepinyourmomsthroat Masvidal said himself when Askren was calling him George that he doesn't mind being called that. He stated if memory serves that most native English speakers refer to him as George and he is cool with it.
His hair isn't new. When he was fighting in the street his hair was long like it is now. They didn't call him ponytail for nothing lol. I thought him growing his hair back was just a return to form for him. Took it back to the roots
@@blade643 yeah true. I don't think he cut it until he went pro. When he fought in the Afc back in the day he had a fade. That was the beginning lol. I followed him throughout his career he was always an exciting fighter but he never really got the right push.
@Matt Wilson Yeah it's stupid as fuck but that's why they're called bandwagonners. Personally I've never turned my back on any of my favourite fighters & my fav fighters always lose 😂
It’s not the hair, it’s not the robe. Exatlón turned that man into a murderer. 💭 Some time alone to think 🤔 on an island 🌴 Ends up headlining fight island 🌴
I for one would not have bought that fight if not for Jorge. I would’ve just watched it on RU-vid or twitter the next day otherwise. I paid for Gamebread
Right... beating nate to a pulp and koing till, or even sending askren to a different realm and serving a 3 piece and a soda, had nothing to do with it
Welterweight division is the most exciting it's ever been and it is because of Jorge. Storylines on storylines. Pieced up a trash talking Edwards. Friends turned enemies with Colby. Inevitable rematch with Kamaru. Jorge vs Conor superfight. Lots of exciting options.
John Fischer - I hear what you’re saying and the point you’re trying to make - but your GSP example is weak - he’s a huge draw, one of the biggest - he also became a fantastic wrestler later in life, he wasn’t a lifelong wrestler like a lot of them. Someone like Blaydes would be an example of a wrestler that’ll never draw.
im I the only 1 who got excited about the colby fight that was great? Usman needs a rivalry with someone fast or he'll be like Demetrious Johnson great but no body cares.
It would be pretty discouraging if you completely dominated a fighter but still the boss blames the success of the event to the person you completely dominated.
Welcome to the world of entertainment if you're easily discouraged don't bother. It's the same reason Dwayne Johnson is the highest paid Hollywood actor and not anybody that went to a Shakespearean School
I don't think it was complete dominance. I mean he controlled him on the fence and shit. But I think champs need to finish guys. He wasn't anywhere near finished or hurt in anyway.
@@moeahmed4582 Yeah he said "I wanted". He didn't say "I thought he was for sure going to". It would've been fun to see Conor Masvidal because they are both strikers who keep to striking and that's fun to watch. Funner, at least, to most fight fans. So I don't see what you're point is.
It's the style man it will always be style that sells fights. The casual fans who just wanna see scraps will watch him and that is the Billion dollar market. With a B not an M. He is his own brand
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Silly silly! Who do you think hea been training for? Fighters dont just sit on the couch until they sign a fight agreement then go hit the gym and start training! Especially at this level. They train for the belt!
i do believe that the 5 sec KO changed his persona in the audiences' heads. then Nate (who was the bigger star due to his comeback after some time) calling him out for a BMF title. UFC could not schedule a title fight for UFC 244 and hence had to create a new belt. Rock at the same time wanted to promote his new project (might not be a big impact, but surely added) and then he beats Nate up. i dont know why but the timing is not being given the credit that it deserves. it was jorge's luck that things happened the way it did. same theory will stand for Conor too. jorge is a highly skilled fighter, but his luck gave him opportunities to shine. he couldn't make UFC pay him better, then guess what happens, the champion of his weight class needs a new fighter on a 6 days notice. dont tell me 6 days notice was not marketed as the biggest thing a fighter has ever done. he is a great fighter, but you need luck to become legen - wait for it - dary.
I can see Masvidal fighting Colby or Connor before going back to the title fight with Usman. Dana wouldn’t let him fight before Gilbert burns so... there’s is a lot going forward for Masvidal. I hope he can make it.
I'm betting that was the biggest point of negotiation. Within hours of announcement, Dana knew giving up a million + but making 50 million+ was a win-win
Yeah, Masvidal didn’t sign the original deal because he didn’t agree with the numbers and so he was passed up but then when Burns got covid and things started to fall through, they came back to Masvidal and he had the leverage he needed that got him those PPV points. So he essentially became a multi millionaire overnight
Chael and Masvidal talk smart & together they can come up with a great show..We will name it something like 'Uncle Chael & The Prodigal Nephew..!'. How's that for a business venture Chael..🤑😉
i think the way masvidal handled the loss aswell just made his star shine even brighter, no excuses, no pettiness just accepted it and says he's gonna go back and return better than ever.
The PPV model really should be a thing of the past to be honest, I know UFC are a growing sport and Dana is fantastic at what he does, nothing but love for Dana however now that the sport has grown so much in so many other demographics it would be so much better if UFC adapted their live events to their Fight Pass service like the WWE Network have done with theirs, all the profits would be theirs and they would get HUGE amounts of subscribers now on there which would also bring attention to the other events too such as Submission Underground which would get loads more exposure and fans due to people discovering it as there's no doubt what so ever that the UFC would gain everything from this with Fight Pass subscribers increasing through the roof and not having middle men to pay either who host these PPV's on their network talking a huge percentage of the UFC's gate. It also cuts out that PPV model for the fans, specially in the US where it's pretty much those who have to cater to it so much, which I do have a lot of empathy for and would love you guys to not have to deal with this all the time. The PPV model should probably be reserved for public places such as bars who are showing the events, then for sure they should pay the PPV prices as they're making a profit of them showing the events. I would *LOVE* the UFC to adapt this model like the WWE Network have, Vince McMahon has got it spot on.
Yeah, those PPV companies are taking a huge cut of UFC's money also to be there where as like you say all profit would go to the UFC and they can use that more to benefit their company. It's less expenditure and more profit basically.
Chael, you're spot on. Honestly, I'm not a casual and I sincerely was so much more interested in Kamaru and Jorge more than I have been since Rose n Joanna and Dc Stipe and Bones Jones V anyone lol I NEED to see Jorge and Usman again stat! It was such a rush!!!
What Nate Diaz did for Jorge is what Conor did for Nate Diaz... As a Diaz fan I have always credited Nathan's popularity because of his wars with Conor. People should at least credit Jorge's popularity to his fight with Nathan. He never drew over a million ppv buys until he fought Nate Diaz.
I think there are a lot of factors in this. 1) it was on fight island during covid 2) 3 title fights the are highly sought after 3) promotion was 10x more than any other ufc bar a Conor fight because Saudi are trying to become the new Vegas and are paying for promotion now. 4) and the most important, masvidal is a star simple as that 👌🏼
All his next fights will generate more than usman. Vs.colby vs.burns vs.nate vs.conner vs.edwards vs.nick . he will sell double in all those fights what usman will sell. Plus he has a back story with all those except burns
Conor did 2 millions ppv in fight with cowboy, in an event that wasn't even supposed to be scheduled before conor had asked for it and sold the gate in less than 3 minutes. If you gave Conor fight with anybody, on fight island, with no other sports running, then conor would do twice as much ppv than Masvidal. You cannot even compare them.
@@ZEROTOHERO0100 you're wrong about that, Conor did north of 2 mil ppv but only with the khabib fight, Conor Vs cowboy isn't even in top 5 of UFC most ppv nos.
@@ZEROTOHERO0100 and I agree with you that Conor will sell more ppv than masvidal or any other fighter but twice is a bit of a stretch as in most countries like mine we don't buy ppv but watch it on live TV
First there is nothing else to watch!! No sports just UFC . And by the way it's was an entertaining!! It's was awesome 👍 and even though Usman won for sure buying Masvidal next fight for sure. 🤘
What about max??? Rose ??? They huge stars too thats why it did 1.3 plus everyone is home , no other sports , no competition and they only did 1.3 that’s tied for the 4th biggest ppv event at ufc and only done 100k more than Connor vs Aldo that did 1.2 mil back in 2012 when u think about it 1.3 Ppv buys not much considering everything ! I bet you if they had Connor on this card first ever fight island card with same under cards would have sold over 2 mil easily !!! Connor vs Diaz 2 did 1.7 mil ppvs buys !!!!
I love how Chael takes everything out of context because that's not even remotely what Dana said regarding the numbers. You only need basic comprehension skills in the following dialogue to come to the conclusion that what Chael said was taken out of context. Here is Dana’s actual quote word for word: Reporter: What do you take out of it (referring to the 1.3 million PPV purchases of UFC 251)? I mean, when you post a number like that, that’s one of the biggest ever. I mean what lessons do you take out of it? Was it Masvidal’s addition? Is it, you know, fight island? I mean what lessons did you take out of that? Dana: Well, I said it to you guys the other night. I think when you put out a fight, you know, a successful promotion of an event, you know is this big melting pot of different things. You know fight island was a massive star in this thing. Masvidal was a massive star. Obviously Usman. You know, the champion and a guy that we all are starting to realize that is tough to beat and a great card underneath it. And it all came together perfectly and it was a major success. But leave it to dumb Chael to make you think otherwise. A 14 minutes commentary on a fictional complement that never took place as you put it in the real world. Thanks for wasting my time.

Yup. Belts mean nothing in terms of star power. Charisma is everything. As long as you're not so shitty that you lose to gatekeepers lol. Guys like Conor and jorge could fight anyone and they'll make money. Dont even need a belt
This guy is an institution. I am going to name it, " The CHAEL shuffle". Loving his phrases. " " I am pointing to you". " I am Suggesting to you" " I offer you this".. this man is a Legend.
This explanation of trash talk versus truth talking made me realize what Chael meant when he told Joe Rogan I don't talk trash, I taught Uncle Chael was joking, he wasn't.
Chael makes a lot of good points here. I think we still need to contrast it with some recognition that Jorge Masvidal definitely did step his game up - whether it was primarily a psychological shift, or a change in his training plan. He got better and now he’s great.
Thanks Chael for giving Mavidal props! You just have to love him, so inspiring and just being himself, always entertaining!..and it was really him that pushed the PPV numbers!
What I like about the UFC is that you dont have to be absolutely killing it to be a PPV star. People like Nate and Jorge are still popular despite not beating everyone. Masvidal is good but it seems he isnt on Usman's or even Covington's level. Where as in boxing if you have a few losses.. you can pretty much forget about selling PPVs.
What I remember of the fight is watching Masvidal be dominated and overpowered for 25 minutes. At no point did he pose any danger to Usman. You can let them do it again but the outcome will be the same. Also don't forget Masvidal is older than Usman. It's not like he will catch up given some time.
Did anyone notice that beautiful switch stance striking shot that Masvidal did against Usman, he did the same to knockout Till. It's a beautiful set up and I thought it would finish the nightmare
When Chael became the American Gangsta the MMA world watched one man roll out his own red carpet and drag bodies down it to a title run. Reinventing yourself to stand out in a profession where you are your business should only make sense.
chaels paraphrasing of Dana is Off. I saw that interview, he was very careful with his words and was very careful on the amount of praise he gave Jorge.
Imagine Connor sees this, sees the compliment Dana gives Masvidal, connors unhappy he’s no longer the best seller or ufc cover star gets upset/annoyed so he decides to come back vs Masvidal or just anyone.
