THE HYPE - twenty one pilots | REACTION + BREAKDOWN 

My interpretation is that Tyler is writing the lyrics to himself (Tyler now and his past self) saying he should not believe his own hype after their blow up to fame. He's remembering where he first started (in his basement making tapes) and telling himself that those who are loyal fans will stay with him even if they don't stay on top of the charts ("my kind will be on my side"). He writes literally that he doesn't know which way he is going within this very song (because he is known for changing up the beat so much), but he can "hear my way around" in the music. Tyler often writes about the song writing process within lyrics (see: Pet Cheetah and more).

There’s a theory I’ve read that the music video represents their progression through each of their album “eras”. For their first self-titled release they had a small intimate fan base (living room), then their popularity grew with Vessel (garage). Then Blurryface blew up and put them in front of massive crowds (the roof), but I think Tyler felt his creativity took a hit (listen to Lane Boy). Falling down slowly represents the year-long hiatus they took to “fix some things” and produce Trench, an album that their real fans would love (back in the living room).

When he closes the door on his chest he is also referencing their song Screen

Btw the intro/outro shots are a reference to the song Screen off their Vessle album, he says “iv got a screen on my chest”

Also notice through out the video that they progressively wear more plaid/flannel as do the fans. I always assumed that was the fans being identifiable to them no matter which direction the band goes in; they could tell who "their kind" were.

Think of this as staying grounded throughout the rising fame... aka, The Hype.

I am here for the NF reactions but I really like TOP also. In case you didn't know they are similar to NF, in the fact that they share a Christian faith but don't necessarily consider themselves "Christian Artists". Their music is so symbolic too. My favorite album is Blurry Face, the first album in history to have EVERY song go "gold"... SO many good songs on it. Id love to hear you do "Ride", "Heavy Dirty Soul" or "Stressed Out"!

I think the thing of them going up to the roof slowly to falling back to the beginning in the living room, while singing the line "nice to know my kind will be on my side" shows that they know that their real fans will be with them no matter how popular they get or no matter how hard they fall, they know they can rely on those fans, and are saying that they will be there for those fans always, if that makes sense, If not I'm sorry lol🤔😂

On their Trench tour when they play The Hype, the huge screens behind them show clips of articles that have been written about them

To me the song and video mean theres always chance to get better, to grow, and even when things seem broken they can always be fixed, even if it's a little crooked like the picture at the end

i get such an oasis vibe from this song, kinda reminds me of champagne supernova in some parts

Tbh this song I think is supposed to be about himself talking.to.his younger self. People will take advantage of you, but people will be with you. Dont believe the hype of fame but know that it'll make you feel less alone inspiring others like you.

It’s totally ok to not get it all on the first time through. The music these men make offers new messages every time you hear it...for years to come...

I understand you've heard most of Blurryface already? How much of Vessel are you familiar with? I'd recommend all of them, but certainly Car Radio, Ode to Sleep, Holding on to You, Trees (Live), Migraine, Guns For Hands, Kitchen Sink.

so like the hype and believing it is like all this fame and fortune but tyler and josh dont want to believe that bc they want to make music for more than just that and so they get bigger and bigger then realize that they are starting to believe the hype so they go back down (to the living room) and are chill again and realize its not good to believe the hype so they start to be themselves again and chill a little

The hype doesn’t sound like a tøp song, and the music video doesn’t seem like a tøp music video. It’s really strange. It kinda has the same feel as hometown in a way. It definitely doesn’t sound like a trench song. It’s really weird but I kinda like it.
