The Worst Talk Show Host Is Still On The Air (Jerry Springer) 

The only person I respect on the Jerry Springer show is the guy working very hard at his one-man circus in the background.

"topless model steals man" Sorry, but I can't help picturing a shirtless woman wearing a ski mask running with a dude hog tied over her shoulder. Can you imagine working at the man store, when a busty burglar busts in and pilfers the merchandise? Even if you could steal a man, what would you do with him? Make him clean gutters? What if the neighbors saw? Would you go to jail for grand theft man?

In my senior year of high school I had to do a presentation where, about 3 minutes before class, my partner told me she had reworked the project so that we would be doing a puppet show version of Jerry Springer addressing the cast of Hamlet. Still one of my most surreal memories.

As a trans man, there's one thing I'd like to address about Jerry's show. When I was 11-12, I was just starting to explore the internet and RU-vid. After teaching myself some basic English (I'm French-Canadian), I ventured a bit further into videos that weren't clips from the Big Time Rush band's tv show. I found that one episode of Jerry Springer where they guess "who's the man". That video f*cking ruined me. If you don't know what I'm talking about, well Jerry had about two dozen people come up on stage all dolled up in gowns and told his audience that some of them were actually men. The people on stage obviously all appeared to be stunning women, so people were shocked. The audience wasted no time and tore apart every one of them, using awful stereotypes as arguments. Some "imposters" were drag queens, but I know some of them are trans women. Jerry organised this, used harmful language, humiliated many members of the LGBTQ+ community on his show and contributed to the perpetuation of hate and violence toward trans and queer folks. He's a piece of sh*t. And the fact that he can't understand why he needs to apologise makes everything worse.

One of my best buds has a traumatic family background. His mother had violent and scarring outbursts. He came from an abusive childhood. Why do I bring this up? His father was offered money to be on Jerry Springer. His father luckily said hell no but knowing people get offered money to be "crazy" for his show is disgusting.

Fun fact: The Jerry Springer show started as a serious talk show with a focus on social equality. It did not do well, so the producers started to emulate the other trash talk shows like Donahue. It quickly became one of the most watched shows on TV.

I’m college, I went to a party with a friend I hadn’t seen in awhile. While there I met two girls who were telling everyone about how they wanted to get on Jerry Springer and they were planning to stage some feud about a cheating boyfriend. I don’t know if they ever succeeded. But I think about them a lot. I hope they achieved their dream.

I went on the jerry Springer show once (audience member, the trip was free), and it was the most scripted shit ever. Before the show started, the producer or whoever came out and told us how to react. Basically: - stand and cheer for Jerry whenever a cue was given to. Also we had to laugh at his jokes. -when the “bad guy” of the segment came out, boo at them - if a fight broke out, stand and cheer as loud as you can and the chant Jerry while fist pumping the air. Yes those were the exact instructions -try to look as invested as possible whenever a camera was pointed towards you - there was a trans person on one of the segments, so even before question time transphobia was rampant in the crowd, though I that’s par for the show. - Most in the audience was either an old person or college kid. Some college frat guy was really into these shows and verbally sucked Jerry off whenever he opened his mouth. It was annoying as shit and by the end it seemed like everyone on set wanted to murder this dude. - Someone’s cell phone rang while Jerry was speaking. - Also if you followed some influencer guy on Instagram you’d get put in a raffle to get a shirt or some shit That’s all I can remember for now, but it was some of the worst two hours of my life. Totally real situations full of real people.

"We happen to dress better" is an interesting statement to me bc in 2008 I was offered tickets to the show and was explicitly given a "business casual" dress code where women were to "dress cute" with no t-shirts allowed. I didn't go, but felt disgusted that they wanted to give off the classist audience vibe.

My old roommates were traveling sideshow performers/clowns/burlesque performers and someone from the Jerry Springer show reached out to them while they were touring to ask if they wanted to come on the show for like an extremely low rate, I believe it was like $100, they wound up not being able to do it but I think that sort of explains the randomness of the background talent.

as someone who immigrated out west as an older child, videos like this and the ones about Maury and Yo Momma are like a little insight into the ehm, culture of the time where my family and i were here physically but very much absent uhm...culturally??? idk how to describe it lol but when you come from a totally different background it takes a long time to get into the inner culture of a society like i definitely grew up hearing names like maury and springer and even references but lacked the context til much later. honestly I would love a video about other judge "reality shows" and how they reflect the American judicial system. A lot of people that show up in these programs seem to be from pretty poor places and, knowing how much costs just going to court, I wonder if they explore those people or are actually doing justice to the extent they can because the system failed them

There's something genuinely amazing about the idea of a judge reading evidence and then going "ooh" at the end like a teenager who just scooped some juicy gossip. Jerry's an awful human but that was hilarious.

So the spinning plates thing, from what I understand and remember, was actually an allusion to the show being a circus. Jerry did things to get his crowd riled up and create the kind of volatile atmosphere they wanted, which included rediculous and distracting circus acts, the whole stripper pole thing, light shows, and other bizarre things. The idea was to make the whole thing seem so unreal that the drama on stage would feel visceral in comparison. This is second hand information, though, so take it with a grain of salt.

I remember seeing this show at a restaurant once with my best friend. We were dying laughing the whole time "bad boy brawls" was on, thought it was some sort of satire or joke or something until I found an episode on RU-vid and all my worst dreams came true 😭😂
