Dallas failing to get a play off at the end of the wildcard against the 49ers should be on a revised version of this list. That one will forever sting for Cowboys fans and make everyone else laugh at the mere thought of it.
10:43 “And it cost Dennis Erickson his job.” Dude there was a LOT that cost Dennis Erickson his job in Seattle, not just that one play! 😂 He’s literally on the Top 10 episode for coaches who should have stayed in college.
@@Noles4life77 The Seahawks in 1998 did have Warren moon at Quarterback Rickey Waters at running back and Joey Galloway at WR On defense they had Shawn Springs at Cornerback Chad Brown at linebacker So to say they had no talent is an overstatement
I remember being surprised at that Gary Andersen missed field goal. But I also seem to remember that the Vikings still led by a touchdown......🤔 Why isn't the defense catching heat for not closing the deal?
A huge part of me, possibly everything but one little toe wish’s Ray Didinger is the only person to give thoughts. The two Raider idiots and most of Mark Maddon caused my finger to search for the mute button just from the sound of their voice alone.
@Harry Engel He’s a homer to no one, he doesn’t manufacture outrage about the about the list and most importantly he’s not a member Sklar brothers who I’m convinced that if I go to hell in the after life I will be forced to spend an eternity on a couch next to them.
Can we talk about the fact that NFL Network has "Top 10 Collapses", "Top 10 Meltdowns", "Top 10 Worst Plays" and "Top 10 Foul-ups" and they're all different lists?
There are a few repeats but the lists are different. For example The meltdowns one includes the 2008 broncos but the collapses one included the 2009 broncos since it came out later and the 2009 team made the 2008 team look better
"Mad Dog" Curtis said it best at the end-"lucky that we won". PS he should have been MVP-caused fumble by Duane Thomas at Colts goal line (the one Manders recovered but officials said Colts recovered) when Dallas TD makes it 20-6, then with just over 1 minute left in 4th quarter, makes INT as shown here to set up O'Brien's winning FG.
Curtis also said that there was a lot of pressure on both teams. The Cowboys being in their first SB and the Colts because they had to avoid what happened in SB III. But still far too many mistakes were made in this game. Curtis should’ve won MVP as he had the play of the game but the voters were just astounded by what they’ve seen that they said you know what lets award one of the losers with it
I disagree that Gary Anderson prevented Minnesota from winning. The defense could have stopped Atlanta from tying the game and stopped them from winning. They didn't.
Hector: that would have made an interesting story. Minnesota and that offense v Elway. Harry: I agree. He had a fantastic career and he didn't lose that game. It's unfair.
Gary Anderson’s miss set the dominos to fall. Atlanta took advantage of the sudden shift in momentum and drove down the field. Even so, that was a kick in Minnesota in a dome no wind artificial turf. There is no reason to miss unless the holder messes up which he didn’t.
Yes, Anderson gets a lot of unfair blame for losing that game. They still led by a touchdown even after he missed that field goal. The defense lost the game.
@@mahmoud6843 that is because every always talks about it because it has become a pop culture legend as opposed to the fact the Redskins were a better on all sides of the ball in all facets of the game.
That Skins team may be the most underrated great team of all time. They went 14-2, great defense, great O Line, great receivers, and one of the greatest coaches ever, Joe Gibbs. That Bills team was good, they weren't beating that Skins team
Exactly. Which is why I laughed my ass off watching that part in the ESPN “30 For 30” film “The Four Falls of Buffalo” when Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith and Darryl Talley insisted that XXVI was the Super Bowl out of the four that they should’ve won. NOT. A. DAMN. CHANCE. 🤣🤣🤣
In what must be the greatest line in football history that I somehow missed before. Steve Sabol’s “Haynes boner remains limp in my memory” is a one liner for the ages.
The Kyle Turley bit they showed, he reacted that way in defense of a teammate who had been tackled, was down with opponents on his lower back, and an opposing player had his arm under that teammate’s head and was driving with his legs trying to bend the guy’s back and injure him. Turley’s teammate was literally screaming in pain and Turley came to his defense, and l had and still have absolutely no problem with him attacking that guy, ripping his helmet off and doing what he did. Honestly the guy who tried to purposely injure the Saints player is the one who should have been suspended and fined. If this had happened on Bourbon St the police would have shaken Turley’s hand and told him “Good job, way to go”.
I remember watching these back in 09' Top 10 on nfl network was GOLD back then! They need to bring this show back! I am so glad we can always watch these videos, cuz you cant find these on NFL network anymore.
Look at Luckett’s conversation with Cowher. It’s a little hard to hear him, but he told Cowher precisely what the amplified audio shows. He told Cowher that Bettis said “headtails”. Luckett was absolutely correct and he made the proper call on the coin flip. Absolutely correct. Luckett was also correct on the Music City Miracle. I understand why some people think otherwise, because of the position of the players. But there IS one angle right down the yard line. The ball CLEARLY goes backwards, if only by a few inches. Poor Phil Luckett. Right on ALL of these calls and made out to be the bad guy. The ONLY bad call shown in the Luckett series was, as the video points out, not even his call. He didn’t make it. Not one single “foul up” by Luckett. (I’m sure he made some. Every official does. But nothing in this video.) He doesn’t even belong on this list. Coin flip? He was right. Music City Miracle? He was right. Why is he being demonized? Zero foul-ups in this video. So, he doesn’t belong on the list. He got everything right that was shown here. It’s just sore loser Pittsburgh and Bills fans that believe otherwise. Whiners. They’re wrong. Luckett was right.
@@dirty.dan37 Romo had been the holder for kicks for several years going back to his days as a backup and I'm guessing Parcells didn't see the need or benefit in changing that mid-season.
It’s ok Mr. Marshal I was 12yrs old that year and a huge Vikings fan , that mistake was no big deal and I can’t believe it’s #1 with all the other stuff . Fran my favorite offensive player Jim Marshal my all time favorite defensive player . Thanks for the memories ..!
I still can't determine whether, or, not Jerome Betts said "Hea-Tails." at 8:59-9:05. Some say he didn't & others say he did. I remember watching this game on Thanksgiving of 1998 & to me, it sounded like he said "Tails.".; To this day, I still hear "Tails."...
Just imagine if Jim Marshall ran the wrong way in today’s climate of football it would never have been forgotten because it would’ve been all over NFL memes everywhere through social media. 40 million people would have been double today… and he would still never get credit for actually causing the fumble later in the game that actually won them the game in that same game.
Bills could have won that game of prepared but it would have been a fight. Redskins were the best in a division that took turns winning Superbowls. It's only cause the Bills losing four times it barely gets talked about. I'M LITERALLY THE BIGGEST BILLS FAN BTW. Lol
@tomatkinson4880 , If the Bills win even ONE of those superbowls, they're in the discussion for greatest team of all time. 4 superbowls in a row is impressive regardless of the outcome.
Jim Marshall should be in the HOF. 20 year career, most starts by a defensive player ever, most consecutive games played for one team, 2x all pro, 130.5 sacks, 30 fumble recoveries... And one lousy gaffe is keeping him out... Ridiculous.
With #10, the Falcons quarterbacks in 1974 would be on my list as well. Not only did they finish bottom of every offensive category that year, but the QBs were sacked 50 times in 430 plays with two Pro Bowlers as offensive linemen: Norm Van Brocklin should have made a comeback at the age of 48. Rudd, Freotte and other boneheaded celebrations and helmet throwing incidents have entries on my extended list, along with Bill Grammatica celebrating a first-quarter field goal and wrecking his ACL (ending his season), various kickers' blown clutch kick attempts (these have its own entry), Red Right 88, the Colts' flea-flicker in Super Bowl III, Washington's flea-flicker on Monday Night Football in 1985 (which ended Joe Theismann's career), Seattle not running the ball in Super Bowl XLIX, Bob Griese getting sacked for a 29 yard loss in Super Bowl VI, Art Modell's failed attempt to move the Browns to Baltimore, and the Butt Fumble, while Leon Lett gets two separate entries. Also, I agree with Abner Haynes being excluded from the list, as he only delayed the Texans' celebrations (rather than causing their cancellation).
Grammatica's acl was highly indicative of him having severe strain to begin with. Its not like his celebration was wild, or even excessive at all.... he hopped once. Generally you're going to hop once on a follow through from a kick too. If you're a pro athlete and outside of your usable skills is "propel self less than 3 feet into the air" something is very wrong. Also how did Art Modell fail to move the Browns to Baltimore? He brought his franchise here. Baltimore REFUSED to take the Browns' name, history and records. We know what its like, when Irsay flew in the middle of the night on the Mayflower truck. Believe it or not, Baltimore was actually concerned about the fate of Cleveland. We didnt want to be the reason that another long time football city had no team for the foreseeable future. There was a lot of trepidation here about it until we found out that an expansion team was going to Cleveland soon after anyway. Since Modell obviously wasnt happy there it just wasnt going to work. With that in mind, we took his franchise, Cleveland got a new one(and stadium which was the start of the problems to begin with) and everyone ended up better overall. Do I think our goodwill towards Cleveland would have stopped the team from coming here? Not a chance. But I also think a fair amount of fans would have boycotted the team until the Browns got one back, out of principle. I learned to hate Irsay before I understood the rules of football, the hurt is deep here. Unitas wont even acknowledge Indianapolis as the Colts.
@@booradley6832 Of course, Modell ended up getting an expansion team while the Browns were out of action for three years - so it did work out better in the end. For bonus points, Modell also fired Paul Brown in 1963 - five years later, Brown founded the Cincinnati Bengals in response, thus giving the Browns their archrival.
At the time I was delirious that Anderson missed the FG, because I knew that my Broncos couldn't beat them. The Falcons and Pete Carroll should be on here now. Leon Lett is infamous because of his mistakes. Mike Grammatica's "celebration" should be on here
Here's the thing they didn't mention: It wasn't John McVay who made that call in the Miracle at the Meadowlands. It was the OC, Bob Gibson. Also, if there was a re-do on this list, the Butt Fumble would easily be #1
That blown call flushed victory down the toilet, and cost Gibson his job the next morning (after angry fans had flooded the Giants with phone calls). He never coached in any level of football again, or spoke about that play for the rest of his life.
@@MRB16th McVay later said his headset was malfunctioning and had he heard the play call, he would have overruled Gibson. The Giants ended up cleaning house after that season with both the HC and GM out of jobs.
I'm a Falcons fan and I could literally say this 2020 season alone for us is at least a top 5 foul up. The only good thing to take away from this is that the coaching staff will get a complete overhaul, and hopefully they invest in some Defense.
But I will say this....The Minneapolis Miracle that happened to New Orleans would be a very satisfying selection for me as well...just saying...I also think the Butt Fumble needs to be on here too.
Ooh, if we had teams on the list of foul-ups, your Falcons would be some way back - you have the Detroit Lions since 1958 (when they traded Bobby Layne) and the New York Jets since 1976 (due to gross incompetence).
At 9:16 if you focus you can hear Bettis say heads if you’re listening for heads, and if you’re listening for him to say tails he says tails. It’s kinda like yanny or laurel from years ago. But tails is a lot more louder though
The standard of play in Super Bowl V was more befitting of a matchup between two cellar-dweller teams at the back end of the season, and they're playing in a torrential downpour to boot. In my opinion, the Colts Super Bowl III effort - where they were upset by the Jets - was better than their Super Bowl V win.
In the episode, they say "there have been 41 super bowls"... super bowl 41 was played in February 2007. What has happened since then that can be considered a Foul Up, as per the criteria of this episode. I'll start (I'm going to avoid bad referee calls/no calls, cause that's it's own list): -Bret Favre's interception vs the Saints, 2009 season -Cody Parkey, double doink -The NFL for allowing slit film synthetic turf, the NFL for over painting the turf for the super bowl between Eagles vs Chiefs -Minnesota Miracle (that Saints defender didnt tackle) -Seahawks not running the ball with Marshawn Lynch on 3rd and goal at the 1 vs Patriots -Falcons not know the onside kick rules vs the Cowboys -the antics of Antonio Brown
While Ray Didinger speculates that Curtis just went down after a short runback to make sure the Colts didn't fumble the ball away after the late INT, Curtis had a different take. "Mad Dog" stated in the "America's Game" series that the Cowboys were so mad about him getting that ball that if they got their hands on him during a runback they would smash him with no mercy...so he just made a couple of moves and went down at the 28 yard line to set up the O'Brien FG.
After all these years, it’s still inconclusive as to whether or not the ball crossed the plane of the goal line before Don Beebe knocked it out of Leon Lett’s hand. I think it was not too long after that that they started having a camera right on the goal line.
The standard of play in Super Bowl V was more befitting of a matchup between two cellar-dweller teams at the back end of the season, and they're playing in a torrential downpour to boot.
The 1991 Washington Redskins had the NFL’s number offense Thanks to Rypien at Quarterback a receiving corps led by Art Monk and the greatest offensive line of all time (Lachey, Schlereth, Jacoby, Grimm, Bostic) Not to mention a defense a defense anchored by pro bowl DE Charles Mann & HOF Cornerback Darrell Green
9:15 Bettis really fooled ppl still today. I can put that coin toss in my mixer and play with treble, boost vocals, and this man CLEAR as day says “headstails” I mean it’s the full word. The ref’s speaker mic to the naked ear makes it sound more quiet. But once you hear it, you can’t Unhear it. I empathize with the ref. Bc it’s genuinely hard to make out tails once you hear heads so clearly
Jim Marshall's accidental safety doesn't belong on this list. It had no effect on the outcome of the game, the Vikings still creamed the Niners that day. Jim was one of the greatest defensive ends in the history of football and although that play is a classic blooper, it's really unfair that his entire career is judged on one meaningless mistake, and it's incredibly fucked up that the hall of fame denies him membership because of it.
No effect doesnt make it any less of a mistake. That is one of the most egregious mistakes EVER. It should always be included. Im sorry that play overshawdows a lot of his career but mistakes are mistakes and you arent immune to them because youre a great player
Everyone has to stop blaming the kicker! Gary Anderson did not lose that game. Denny Green going conservative and playing for overtime instead of taking a shot down field to Randy Moss or Cris Carter he had them kneel down and waste the end of the 4th quarter. If you put your team in a position to lose, you might lose.
I still don't understand after the Bass TD on Garo's goof why Washington didn't try an onside kick. It cost them about a minute on the clock-not sure it would have made a difference with the Dolphins D but you never know.
As bad as Gus Frerotte's headbutt of the concrete wall was in that 1997 Redskins-Giants game, Michael Westbrook's bonehead helmet-throwing incident was even worse, as it took us out of PK Scott Blanton's FG range; idiot cost us the win and the playoffs.
Mr. Westbrook ended the season once and for all. That said, if Westbrook didn't throw his helmet, Frerotte would have been out of the playoffs due to his sprained neck as a result of his stupid celebration.
@@MRB16th Yep, just like the previous season: So damn close, yet so far away from the playoffs, in spite of a winning season. Such a guhdamned heartbreak.
@@christianorr1059 May I ask - why did Westbrook think it was a good idea to throw his helmet? I thought the worst helmet throwing incident was Dwayne Rudd, whose early celebration cost the Browns (of all teams) a game against the Chiefs.
I will never stop loving how Eagles fans mock the Giants and Cowboys blunders when they are two of the Top 5 franchises ever, and the Eagles are well the Eagles. At least the Giants and Cowboys don't choke in every NFC Title Game
The missed fg by Gary Anderson in the 98 NFC Championship would've put the game out of reach, but it didn't cost the Vikings the game. Because, the Vikings were still up by 7 points. This wasn't wide-right in Super Bowl 25, where if Scott Norwood makes the kick to put the Bills ahead 22-20 with a win, instead of losing 20-19.
Greg Cosell is confused. The Atlanta Falcons went 4-8-2, 7-6-1, 7-7 and 9-5 from 1970 to 1973 - the early 70s. They weren't great by any measure, but none of those teams was truly bad. The 1970 Falcons were the last NFL team to play back-to-back ties. Only the 1974 and 1976 teams were genuinely putrid. Gary Anderson's miss was forgivable in light of everything else he did. Lest ye forget, the Falcons that year were 14-2 and won 11 straight coming into the Super Bowl, beating the snot out of some pretty good teams along the way. Dan Reeves is a HOF coach. Joe Gibbs is also a HOF coach. Joe Theismann is NOT a HOF QB, and part of the reason for that is encapsulated in how he threw Gibbs under the bus in #5. Theismann threw a back-breaking pick-six and then blamed Gibbs? How about Theismann's an asshole? Dead square on SB5. That game was awful in just about every phase except one, and that was in the redemption of Jim o'Brien, who totally deserved it. Another HOF guy, Jimmy Johnson, stood up for Leon Lett on a play where even I knew you don't touch the ball. Kudos. 33:15 The Pop Warner quote made me laugh... I was on the defensive side when an opposing QB pulled a Griese and we sacked him for - I shit ye not - a 55-yard loss. We then proceeded to sack the kid again for a safety on the next play (3rd and about 62).
Thiesmann said he wanted to ask Gibbs about that play - Gibbs had a pretty good response on this one (also, Rocket Screen was a boneheaded play to call any way you see it). As for the 1974 Falcons, I still maintain their head coach, Norm Van Brocklin, should have benched their three dud quarterbacks and made a comeback at age 48.
@@MRB16th I looked up Kim McQuilken, one of those quarterbacks... he has the lowest QB rating of anyone with over 200 attempts since 1950 (17.9). Just brutal.
Not really. Besides that last moment with the receiver, I can’t blame him for the Jets call that wasn’t his to make and the right call made on a weird play in the Music City Miracle.
Alright time out. On the Vikings bit they talked about them being "clear SB favorites" and "clearly the best team in football" and all that hype. Were the Broncos not just one game behind the Vikings? And started the year like 13/14-0 or something? Seems they had one other team to make claim for best in the league at least.
