That was a pretty good review. Back I the 70s and 80s I instructed in Skippers and Sundowners in Australia. We had two Skippers on the line for basic training, two Sundowners and a Sierra for cross-country and private hire, plus a Bonanza for going places. All great aircraft for the role, but my best memories were cross-countries in the Sundowner. A roomy cab, with just that bit of extra power made it at little more likeable than a Cherokee (not that there's anything wrong with them). We used to plan on 100 kts in them. The Skipper is a delight for scootering around the sky. If you prefer a high-wing, the Cessna 152 is a fun little toy, the 172 is the perfect 'utility' machine and the 182 is nice if you need a bit extra grunt.

I learned in a 152 with an stol kit; as if it needed it. During emergency loss of power procedures and stall training, it could almost hover. Forgiving is appropriate though not pronounced loudly enough.

The Cessna C-150 and C-152 are virtually the same airplane. The C-152 has a 2-inch increase in length, a 2-inch increase in wingspan over the C-150, but has the exact same wing area. The C-152's empty weight is 41lbs lighter, and has a 70lb advantage in max takeoff weight (MTOW). The biggest change was an increase from the C-150's 100HP O-200-A, to the 110HP O-235-L2C engine. I wouldn't call this a screaming difference. I spent my first 50-hours of flight time in the C-150 back in the '70s. Got my Private Pilots License in the same tail number that I first soloed in - a C-150M, the last year of the C-150. Your review of it drove me to watch a few You Tube videos on it, and it brought back fond memories. Thank you for that.

Lol, buy a 30k plane (even a really cheap one like a 152 or experimental) and fly it for the recommended ~100hrs a year for a couple of years then come back and tell us how affordable it is :) -- Renting is really the way to go if you fly any less than that anyways - you can choose your plane based on mission which is a HUGE benefit, biggest drawback to that is you might lose the ability to leave the plane on the ground at your destination for long (some rentals allow it, some just charge per night, others just dont allow at all)

Is this the cuba edition video? :) Another angle you could maybe do a video about is that you could get a Lancair IV-P for 35k in a 7-way fractional ownership. That's a 4 seater pressurized plane capable of above 500km/h speed. That's fast enough that you could reasonably beat a commercial jet from London to NY. If you dare fly over ocean :) Certainly any flight in USA or Europe is doable in such a plane and would in practice beat a commercial jet

I havent been looking at amphibs but the Sportsman 2+2 landing gear can be swapped out for tailwheel, trike, or amphib. The floats ALONE are $49,995 new. Its an amazing plane but that part in particular blew my mind!

@@whoisntwhoisit2126 lots of older planes ranging from the 40's-$70's that can be had for under $50k that are either amphibious or float planes. I've been working on a Republic RC-3 that I've bought as pieces and plan to get it recertified. It'll either get a newer diesel swap or the Robinson conversion. For now I'm just focused on getting it together and getting a way more comfortable interior installed. Also plan to have it wrapped once the paint is finished.

Mike, this is a bit off-topic, but I'm hoping you can address this. For those of us who choose to build an aircraft from a kit, is it true that we retain the "manufacturing" responsibility for that aircraft, even after it's sold? Does that answer change, depending on whether we hire someone to help us with the build? In short, is the kit builder forever liable for that airframe, in the event that a subsequent purchaser is involved in an accident, regardless of the cause of said accident? Thanks!

Coming from a former Beechcraft skipper owner, the perfect trainer in every way, until you need a repair or parts, Beechcraft only produced 272 of them, parts are almost impossible to find, I’d stay away from any rare aircrafts.

Hey, just wondering why lots of USA flying videos refer to mph? I was taught to fly using knots. Just curious.

Instruments showed speed in MPH only for a LOT of years. Then, they showed scales for both. Back in the early '90s, the went strictly to knots. Why anyone still expresses speed in MHP is beyond me. It's also like performance numbers. A 75% power setting is the gold standard as far as aircraft-to-aircraft comparison is concerned.

Back in the day American aircraft manufacturers were trying to expand their sales by trying to make planes more like cars. The “Ercoupe” was a plane that didn’t even have rudder pedals! So, I think that’s why we got a lot of things in miles per hour instead of knots, which aren’t known that well outside of sailing and aviation.

In shopping myself I’ve found a good general budget is around $10 to 12k per year all in (hangar, insurance, etc). Some of these would be cheaper with the fixed gear etc I’m sure, probably down around $5k per year for just maintenance... I just like to pad the numbers so I have enough. I’m looking more at retractable gear ones is why I’m looking at around $12k per year for maintenance alone. Then a bit more for the fixed costs.

A friend of mine recently paid $14,000 for a Cherokee 140. It had the current panel which includes $8,100 of modern avionics. I posted a video of it encountering a flock of seagulls while landing yesterday. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8TKMR_ZzTMw.html It flies beautifully and consumes amazingly little oil. Cruises 115 - 120 mph on 8 gph or less. The engine is high time, of course.

Prices are fluid. Always have been. Light aircraft (2-4 seats) are predominately primary training, and pleasure aircraft (disposable income items/luxuries/toys). The prices closely follow the need for commercial pilots, the economy, and fuel prices. Prices for training aircraft, again, 2-4 seats, exploded with the airline pilot shortage a few years ago. Look for the price of these same aircraft to plummet due to the fore-coming pilot glut due to Covid-19 induced furloughs.

Yes things are more expensive in general but not enough to justify the market. Which is simply supply and demand
