Today we're making grape shot using a musket ball mold, some chain shot, and some bar shot to shoot out of our cannon. There's plenty of different types of cannon projectiles so if you'd like to see us make more videos like this let us know! If you have any ideas about things you'd like to see us shoot with the cannon or shoot out of the cannon leave them in a comment below and we will try to get those out for you guys!

That's the exact same lead pot I used for years, back when I'd cast my own bullets and balls. Sorry I missed you at the Centennial Crafts Fair in Nashville this weekend. Talked to your dad and he told me about your cannon exploits.

I like the mix of videos. The making of the projectile. The loading of the projectile. The shooting. Ideas for other videos (if you haven't done so already; I am working my way through them, so you might have already done these): • making and setting up the targets (gel blocks, stands, etc) • loading the cannon from scratch (powder, fuse, touch hole, wadding, recoil blocks) • aiming the cannon • transporting the cannon • cleaning the cannon (that power must foul up the barrel, surely.) • making and maintaining the slow match I am utterly fascinated by these videos. I am a Canadian living in Canada. No cannon for me... legally anyways.

Thanks for the awesome ideas! I was just thinking about a video on cleaning it too. It's cleaned every time we're done at the range and that's some black water when we're done. I'm add the rest of your ideas to my list! Thanks! Are black powder guns regulated as much as cannon in Canada?

@@TheCannoneerAntique firearms (manufactured pre-1898) are immune from licensing and registration. Black powder long guns (matchlock, flintlock, wheellock) are considered antiques, even if manufactured on or after 1898. Firing a projectile from a black powder cannon is covered by one set of regulations. Firing a black powder cannon without a projectile is covered by another set of regulations. I think I'd have to be a lawyer to answer your question. I don't know how different calibres are regulated. I know people who shoot black power long guns and pistols at the gun range. I don't know anyone who shoots a real black powder cannon (though I am told that our historical fort in our valley had occasionally fired black powder blanks on special occasions at some point in the past). I do also know someone who made an improvised cannon from an old acetylene tank and used it to fire 10-inch rubber-skinned air-filled toy balls with a tiny black powder charges from the top of a coulee into the valley (the balls were retrieved later). The neighbours down the road panicked and called the police. I think there was a talk with the local sheriff. Not sure what came of it, wasn't told what was said, but the sheriff drove off.

So sorry I just saw your reply! Yeah we've had the cops show up a few times, and one of them was today when we were finishing up tomorrow video. I don't know how a cannon would do in an indoor gun range but I've wondered. It might go through the back wall though!

@@TheCannoneerI think you replied to the wrong comment. You already replied to this one a few months ago. I still have a backlog of your videos yet to watch, sir. You're making videos faster than I watch them. Huzzah! Infinite content!

Do you have to worry about fumes from the molten lead and pouring? How do you remove the sprue from the large cannon balls-bolt cutters? What about lead dust/vapours that become suspended in the air during the projectile clipping process and the firing of the cannon? If the lead hemispheres separate from the bar or chain during firing, then a steel flange (think thick washer) at each end might help hold onto the lead, assuming that the flange isn't simply sheared off.

We usually wear a mask, we've got full respirator sets in the shop but I also keep the windows and fans open in there when we're pouring in big amounts too. As for clipping everything off, just a pair of wire cutters and it's super easy. You can usually break it off with your fingers once it's cold as well. I'll keep the washers in mind as well! I'm hoping there's some interest in seeing them shoot a sail and ship replica one of these days.

Was brass, iron, aluminum or steel used in grape shot used? If so wouldn’t harder metals penetrate more than lead and possibly be used against gunners manning cannons below deck who were protected by armored gun ports and thicker wood?
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer 2 месяца назад
They would shoot anything they could fit down the barrel including broken glass bottles, nails, bits of metal scraps, anything that would hurt someone. I need to make some of those rounds one day. The French were known for their trash rounds.

@@TheCannoneer isn’t that type of shot called a langridge shot that uses whatever miscellaneous junk they can shove down the barrel? I also have another question, since the British Challenger 3 tank runs the Rheinmetall 120mm L55A1 smoothbore cannon and can fire US made M829A4 APFSDS round. Do you know of anyone who has tried to create a modern APFSDS for an older cannon? Since back in the day they used to fire incendiary arrows/ bolts out of them so it should be possible

you are actually making canister shot not grape kettle of fish and fired and constructed differently how were you trained on cannons? or self taught ? if the latter suggest yin get with some people hat know and can train you what to do and what not to do good way to meet your maker also please learn how to hold rammer correctly,YES have been firing loading and instructing for years and on much bigger than yours,also pouring lead you need to wear safety goggles get hit with a slash goodbye eye

We’re planning on making a video of historical grape and canister shots and showing on how to make them with the actual springs and the wooden base and bags. I actually talk about canister shot in our upcoming video and address how our loads are more similar to canister rather than grape given the wad we use to hold everything together. I think the historical grape will be a good video. Thanks for tuning in!
