The stock airbox on Mazdaspeed 3's and 6's have been known to be quite restrictive, so upgrading will definitely add horsepower, torque, better throttle response and quicker turbo spool. These features will be greatly enhanced with a tune. This install video should help those that are either just trying to install an intake or those who are looking to install a full intake and turbo inlet pipe as well.
*PLEASE READ - Adding an intake to a Mazdaspeed 3 or 6 can cause a stock high pressure fuel pump to lose pressure causing your engine to run lean. It's recommended you upgrade your high pressure fuel pump internals before this install.*
Parts:
- James Barone Racing Power Path Stage 2 Intake
* Intake Hose
* Billet Aluminum MAF Housing
* Dry Flow Filter
* Turbo Inlet Pipe
Tools we used:
- Flat Head Screwdriver
- 3/8 Ratchet and Various Sockets (mostly 10 mm)
- 12 inch 3/8 Extension
- Needle Nose Pliers
- Vise-grip (not required but helpful)
- Wrenches of Various Sizes

Nice intake. I personally went with the HTP 3.5" full intake (includes everything from filter to turbo inlet, all in one piece). Aluminum is a lot more durable, and it's a good price as well. I will say, however, that I had to relocate my ECU for the 3.5". HTP has a 3" intake that doesn't necessitate this, though. Either way, since the stock intake is ~2.65", you'll have to adjust the tune and scale the MAF table(s) accordingly if you go with these larger intakes. They're a must if you plan to turbo upgrade, though. The stock intake maxes out pretty quickly with a turbo swap.

I nearly bought one of these but went for a focus St mk2. apparently the mk 2 St and rs are not legal in the states. the mk2 has the Volvo 2.5, 5 cylinder turbo lump and sounds awesome unlike the mk3 2.0 turbo which you guys now have. I bet it sounds great with that induction kit! :-D

very good and detailed video. only problem is i could barely hear you with my volume up. and then the power tools became really loud. for future videos i would either invest in a wearable mic, or do a voice over so we can instructions better. thank you for the tutorial though

Did you debate this intake or the Wide Path intake before placing your order? I would really like this intake in my car as well but that 3" WP is really tempting.

We own both. James Barone Racing released their TRU 3 inch Wide Path a few months ago and we pretty much bought it same day. Once we giveaway this intake the new TRU Wide Path will be going on this car. If you're looking to upgrade and plan on keeping the car for a while I would, without a doubt, go Wide Path . So mine is a automatic 2.0 litre car non skyactive I saw a guy who actually cut the air intake box out from bottom and used tht to get more air. I mean doesn't most JDM s comes with factory cold air intake. It's just what I heard only. So I was planning to cut a hole in my air intake box to get more air flow

you need instal the turbo and leater the air intake with the turbo inlet or meaby you can instal one air intake with out the turbo but with turbo is beter :) *check yes is legal in your city instal one turbo in your car*

I'm so glad my speed 6 doesn't have that whole battery box. I just have to unhook the battery take two bolts out of the tray and boom I'm done. I don't have to unhook all that mess of ecu and all that.. so much easier

OK. Moment of truth... What you are not telling us is how you manage to not cut scratch scrape or otherwise mutilate your hands, wrists, arms etc. I can eventually (trial and error, old school) fix stuff but I always seem to shed blood. Can you help? Love your presentations.

Just got my speed 6 the other day bone stock. I want to install a CAI but not sure what brand to go for i heard corksport is good and cobb is good im just not sure what brand is best. I'm not looking to race it or anything just dd for better mpg and a little more hp obviously. Im a DSM guy so not sure what to go with here. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

+Talon Td The ones you mentioned are all good choices but I personally prefer JBR intakes because they're reasonable priced, excellent quality and ship free. Also, I would stay away from cold air intakes they really serves little purpose on a turbocharged and intercooled cars. Once that air hits the turbo it's going to be heated, having reduced intake air temperatures from a CAI won't really change that. I would buy a short ram instead and save the rest for an upgraded intercooler. Plus short rams are safer since they sit at the top of the engine bay. Cold air intakes sit pretty low and can greatly increase the risk of hydro locking your engine if you live in a wet area. Thanks for watching!

+Talon Td On a Speed 6 I think it's a necessity. I've seen first hand how bad that car can heat soak, without a hood scoop the air flow around the top mount intercooler is pretty poor unless you're driving at highway speeds.

My only suggestion is to not place your bolts and tools on the plastic cover, magnetic parts trays are a good investment or even a yogurt container, I have a pretty well full tube of dielectric grease in my truck somehwere from resting things where they shouldnt be.. Nice video:)

Should have made a heat shield for the intake as all your doing now is sucking in hot air and decreasing the potential of the mod. Hopefully a front mounts next? The top mount must heat soak extremely quickly.

IAT's are fine, they're usually 5-10 degrees lower than BAT's. BAT's are usually 10 degrees higher than ambient. We had a heat shield on our car for a while but the difference was negligible. The Gen 2 hood scoop actually does a great job of keeping heat soak to a minimum. Temps can get high when sitting at a light or in traffic but once you start moving the go down very quickly. If we had the first generation we would have for sure gone with a front mount. Thanks for watching!

MechRider89 It's a fun cars. The FWD can be annoying at times but you get use and start to enjoy all the other great aspects of the car. I have my fingers crossed for a next gen Mazdaspeed 3 or 6, if any. Rumors are AWD. I hope it's true, I'll be first in line.

After installing my intake, I get backfiring, usually second gear when I'm a little harder on the thorttle and shift. Is this normal? Will it go away after a while? I figure it something to do with running rich and hoping it will adjust.

+Anthony Bui Sounds like you're running rich during shifts, this is likely from high long term fuel trims. Depending on how far you've driven the trims may still adjusting to the new intake or they could be out of whack due to a leak in the system. Did you unplug the battery for 30 seconds after installing the intake to let the ECU reset? What size is the intake you are using? Do you have any way to monitor your car (Bluetooth OBD adapter, Access Port)?

I had the battery unplugged for quite a while, so the ECU should definitely be reset. I installed the corksport stage II SRI that comes with the TIP. That one plastic nipple that breaks easily, I did end up breaking that, but I put it back together as best I could with teflon and duct tape. I ordered a new solenoid to be safe. Do you think this could be the issue?

+Anthony Bui Yes that can cause a vacuum leak and let unmetered air into the system. I would definitely replace it, those nipples are hard to mend after they're broken. Which nipple did you break?

The one that connects to the TIP. I realized it broke immediately when I pulled the stock TIP out. At that moment I instantly recalled the part where you said these things break easily and then proceeded to make that face when you fuck up lol.

thats a top mount intercooler.. on some cars its inside the bumper and you dont see it but on these and cars like the wrx or even v8 turbo landcruisers and patrols and rx7's and the list goes on.. can have top mount intercoolers it helps cool the turbo.

Richard Sarabia It shouldn't. The MAF housing size on this intake is close to the same size as the stock intake so the MAF voltages and long term fuel trims should be within a reasonable level. If you upgraded to an intake with a larger MAF diameter say 3 inches then yes it would absolutely produce a check engine light. Thanks for watching!

moe raw shouldn't need a tune for just an intake install. if you go with a new downpipe then I'd suggest a tune.

All depends on the tune. My guess on a stock tune and assuming the ECU can keep the MAF calibration within a decent spec I would say 10-12 WHP. Spool time, throttle response and sound will probably be more noticeable. With just an intake and an off the shelf cobb tune (or similar) this car been known to put down an extra 25 WHP with ease (even more so with a custom tune and more bolt ons). Thanks for watching!

+Bill Lumbergh to an extent the stock ecu will adjust the amount of fuel to the new amount of air coming in and yes it will make more power...no it isn't as much as with a tune but yes just dropping in an intake on a completely stock speed will make more power.

When ever she goes to remove a different part the video skips a scene then re connects, I came to the conclusion that her hubby is the one losing the bolts so it's easier for her to just pull them out and that's the part we are seen here, she a savage and edits her hubby out of the picture, Lol I could be wrong with my conclusion but I will stand right until proven wrong :P sry for mispelling.

this doesn't add horsepower to ur car if anything it is sucking in hot air from the engine bay which is not good for ur engine ur Mass air flow sensor will see that you have hott air coming into the engine and will adjust ur air to gas ratio and will drop ur mpg down

Why not? I haven't paid for one in a very long time because of Costco's warranty. I mean yeah they usually don't last a long time but they usually fail within the warranty period which is a no hassle replacement at zero cost. I'll stick with Costco.

I'd rather buy one that lasts for many years and not have to worry if it will fail 6 months after I bought it, regardless if the replacements are free. I don't have time to keep getting batteries. Call me crazy.
