This album was definitely a highpoint in Frank Zappas live. Isnt it interesing that most artists are best in the beginning.. Greetings from Stockholm....
Very enjoyable Michael! Always interesting to learn more about the large Zappa universe, which I saw lost a member this past week with Tom Fowler passing.
Hi Richard! Yes, very sad about Tom Fowler. I was fortunate enough to see him a couple of times with Zappa in the '70s as well as with the Band from Utopia in the '90s. Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed that, Michael. More deep dives, please... 😃(Just bought the MOI "Live at the Whiskey" CD version, sounds truly fantastic.) Greetings from Stockholm🎶🎸😎
Thanks Michael! I've been enjoying the Whisky CD, and I have the Highlights double LP on order. The 5LP box set, I'm afraid, is a little rich for my blood, and is sold out now in any case.
WOW 5 CD ,great and yeah understand that its costly... Dweezil Z is coming to Stockholm in november, looking forward to that (hope he does "TLHIUTLI"...)😄
@@michaelwosslert9524 Dweezil puts on a great show! I saw him on the tour where he did the full One Size Fits All album, and it was a blast. He did a ton of other stuff beside the featured album, and he had a brilliant band.
Hey Michael! I love the deep dives and always love seeing the different versions you have. This was a great one! I really like this album but I don’t dare play it anytime when my wife and kids could come in. lol. Your deep dive videos are wonderful and I always love seeing what you pick up because that usually introduces me to new things. Any video you put out I’m a fan of!
Hi Bill! Yes, and I didn't even tell the story (which I've told before) about how our house was being remodeled when the album came out, and I didn't have a door on my bedroom yet, so I had to play the album very quietly so my mother wouldn't hear the lyrics!
Thank god for the disclaimer Michael. Michael your deep dives are outstanding. I don’t have that album but you really explained it well. Now am I going to go out and buy it, weeelll probably not but this was very interesting. You do an outstanding job on a deep dive.
Michael, you do a great job with either type of video. The deep dives are especially interesting because you pull out all of this related material, different versions and singles. Thanks, Chris
i know FZ fans who HATE this period . personally i love it, as it was my introduction to frank. ( just another band from la + Fillmore ) i have also bought the CD box set of the Fillmore shows. fantastic! cheers.
Michael, your deep dive into the Yes album, ''Tales From Topographic Oceans'' was a favorite of mine. You really polished up that Jewel! John Lennon wrote liner notes in red ink over a copy of ''The Mothers'' album. It was included on the inner sleeve of the ''Some Time In New York City'' double album. Unlike you, Michael, I'm not a musician, just a music lover/ listener, so your deep dives are very educational to my ears/ brain. In addition, your ''funny editions'' of 45s and full length albums are always a treat. I enjoyed this video, even though I never owned it. I did enjoy and owned, ''Just Another Band From L. A.'' The song ''Call Any Vegetable'' is a fun tune with nice guitar parts. Don Preston plays the mini- moog throughout ''Billy The Mountain'', much to my delight. Cal Schenkel said that the album cover art on ''Burnt Weeny Sandwhich'' was supposed to be used on an Eric Dolphy release, but that of course, never happened.
Hi Michael! Zappa was not happy about John Lennon issuing that defaced version of the Fillmore cover--I don't think Lennon even asked for permission to use the album art. In fact, Zappa was unhappy about that release in general, including the way the jam was edited/mixed and credited. The Eric Dolphy album that the Burnt Weeny Sandwich art was created for did eventually come out as Iron Man, of course with different art. Thanks for watching, all the best!
Wonderfully exhaustive deep dive...or shall I say deep dish? I was laughing out loud at the innacurate lyric transcription. Thanks for all that. Unbridled buffoonery at its best!
Hehehehe kinda makes Joes Garage look like or a sound like “family night” 😮😳🤭.....mm mm dig the 45s!!!! wowza very cool....my vote is here here and here thank you Michael......I was a part of that first time voter at 18 ✊🏻☮️on...brother M.
Howdy Lis! Ha, and I didn't even tell the story about when I first got this album and our house was being remodeled, so my bedroom didn't have a door yet, and I had to keep the volume down so my mom wouldn't hear the lyrics! Hope you enjoyed the 4th, have a great weekend!
I'm dead chuffed with the 'record holder uppers' and mole whackers. Your previous commentaries have been very entertaining and engrossing, I always look forward to your stuff, great work!
@@michaelpdawson Why must I always be so obtuse? From a non-sequitor standpoint it made perfect sense. No moles whacked, but they matched? Matching Mole! This serves as another example as to how (either in my music or relating to humanoids) I crab a play...
Nice shirt Michael. I once had ( I kid you not) a homemade Peter Hammill shirt an acrylic artist friend of mine did freehand. Nobody knew who the image was...constantly stopped by strangers asking 'Who is that, man?'🤣🤪
Michael, I mistakenly thought that you were going to show a beaten up/ disfigured copy of Fleetwood Mac's ''Rumours'' album. Fantastic review of ''Mars Hotel'', I loved the details that you included. I was brought up on the live versions of the classic tunes from this release, but enjoy the studio recordings too. I met a young guy, Pedro, who studied Echolocation at Brown University, we bonded due to our shared love of music. He always educated me about bats and we turned each other onto some great music. He really dug my recommendation of Alvin Lucier's ''echolocation'' piece, ''Vespers'' from 1968. Mendoza Hoff Revels does conjure up the King Crimson crunchfest. For better or worse, bats do eat insects, I know you love insects !
Hi Michael! I forgot to mention the "ugly rumors" hidden title on the Dead album. Of course I still love animals that eat insects; even many of my favorite insects themselves eat other insects. Thanks as always for watching!
Hi Michael, despite being a pretty avid Deadhead I don't think I'll be going for the Mars Hotel reissue. I think I'll stick with my version that I got way back in the day - it's just that there's so much other stuff to get! It's not my favourite of their studio albums (though good) - I think Ship of Fools may be my favourite track on there. Unfortunately I think the Mendoza Hoffs Revels may not be up my street from the evidence of the needle drop - love the artwork though. Nice to see your album is keeping good company behind you - and quite rightly so. All the best... Pete
Hi Pete! I'm a little surprised that the Mendoza Hoff Revels does not appeal to you. You might try visiting their Bandcamp page and sampling some of their other tracks. You may still not care for it but it's worth a shot! I'll be looking forward to Blues for Allah presumably getting the 50th anniversary treatment next year. That one IS one of my favorites. Cheers!
Interesting to hear about Mendoza and those animals using echo location ..I love stuff like that. I need to check out more Greatful Dead, I have only a scant knowledge of their discography..the Live Dead and American Beauty albums are the only two I'm really familiar with. Hope you're keeping well Michael. 😉 🙏
Hello Rob! If you have only one Grateful Dead studio album, American Beauty is an excellent choice! Live Dead is very highly regarded, but a bit mixed for me--I'm not a great fan of the "Lovelight" side. Thanks for watching, all the best!
Grateful Dead record looks great. China Doll is a great song for sure. Eerie is a good description; kind of ominous. I am not familiar with Samuel R. Delaney - maybe I'll try to track down something he's written. Thanks for showing the records!
I feel the king crimson vibe on what you sampled.....I too dig Jerry’s vocals/ songs...and I for one love love the noodling 🎸🎶😎your wall of sound is humbling Michael....right up there w Owsley? Maybe? Probably if ya crank it 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶cheers Michael what a fine review 👏🏻🙌🏻✊🏻☮️
It is easy to pick out a Gabor guitar part, I have a few of his album. Loved the samples I always thought of you as a very Impulsive person so I understand your love for the labor The Lucy in the Sky track sounds very interesting.
Marianne Faithfull's Broken English has the Compass Point All Stars as her band , recording in one of the best studios on the planet at the time, Compass Point. This is Chris Blackwell's (Island Records) studio. As Mike might know, Wally Badarou (Compass Point All Star) has recorded with Talking Heads. He played the most on Speaking In Tongues and his solo album called Echoes is really good.
Michael, I did not know that Andy MacKay had two versions of his solo album. I have the second and didn't realize it. I also did not realize that the Catherine Wheel had an expanded version. Thanks, Chris
Michael, excellent brain- food and ear candy on display right here and now! I need ''The Catherine Wheel'', like a junkie needs junk. I also need David's ECM album, '' Music For The Knee Plays'' That album features guys like Jackie Kelso, Ernie Watts and drummer Paul Humphrey, who are more likely to be found on a Steely Dan or Zappa recording. The Nonesuch label reissued ''The Knee Plays'' with bonus tracks and maybe a DVD. The only Andy Mackay ''solo'' project that I have is '' Rock Follies'', I think we discussed that album a few years ago. Andy was responsible for dragging Eno into Roxy Music, I noticed the Eno single, behind you. Marianne Faithfull's live album, '' Blazing Away'' recorded in the late 1980's is spellbinding, Dark cabaret and ultra- modern Torch song. Peasant Food is good for you, and so is Peasant Song, they both ''go'' good with beer! Nostalgia ain't what it used to be, I saw Dannie Richmond play live with the Don Pullen/ George Adams quartet, with Cameron Brown, the band was red-hot and Dannie stoked the fire!
Hi Michael! I have the VHS video release of Blazing Away buried somewhere deep in my closet. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have ever come out on DVD. Very cool that you got to see Dannie Richmond!
The Bandcamp links on VC videos often get me in trouble. Staiano is on order. Interesting pickups, and I thought the Byrne one was particularly interesting and need to dive into that album more. Have a great rest of the weekend.
Really dug the Byrne sample. Will pick that up if I run across it. Byrne rode his bike by my house once when in town for the DNC. He was headed to Repo Record lol
Great story Dave, I saw an interview with Byrne, he talked about riding his bike. I wish he was riding his bike down my street and got a flat tire. I'd offer to fix his tire and serve him some lemonade and talk about music for hours and hours. He could sleep over and the next day, we could talk about music for hours and hours.....
Always enjoyed David Byrne and his altra expanding musical prowess, and Andy Mackay I’ve always enjoyed his inclusion w Roxy...good to see ya Michael👋🏻just came in from a wonderful Juneteenth celebration downtown, I wasn’t aware it was going down, but I’m happy I stumbled upon it...great music, food, info and Jamaican type shirts .....cheers brother M✊🏻🎶☀️🌈☮️😎
Hi Lis! Sounds like great fun, glad you had a good time! I’m at a noise music show right now (it’s in between acts) where they serve pancakes! Have a great week! ❤️
lol, put the link in the description where no one will look, ahaha. Great point Michael. Always an eclectic treat for our ears. I will be passing on the German folk songs but someday I do need to get Cahterine Wheel again
Gabor sounds great. Moe Staiano guitar army record looks and sounds great - I had not heard of him before. That warped record has a great album cover - worth keeping. Good luck with the flattening process.
Hi Mike! Defenitly Prestige for me,too. The Gabor-disc sounds lovely. (Been to Poland for a few days and while there I scored some Polish 60s jazz, which I really dig. All the best from Stockholm🎶😎🎸
Michael, my favorite Jazz label is Hat- Hut from Switzerland, it morphed into Hat Art, Hatology and maybe currently operating under a different name. Szabo attracted me because of his ''Exotica'' style, like a mix of Zappa, Santana and Django Reinhardt. I love the sound of massed guitars and massed ukuleles or for that matter, massed mandolins. The snippet you played by Moe Staiano reminds me of the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, the addition of drums by Moe seems like a sensible choice. Karen Borca might be the only Free Jazz bassoonist still active on the ''scene''. Karen's work with Jimmy Lyons is amazing and she pulled off some wonderful solos amidst the maelstrom of the Cecil Taylor bands.
Hi Michael! Oh yeah, Hat Hut/Art is a great one. Oddly, I can't think of any vinyl I have on the label, but there are a fair number of CDs. Karen Borca came to my attention through the Cecil Taylor Winged Serpent album. Love the sound of the bassoon. For a long time RU-vid was showing me bassoon videos meant for players (instrument reviews and such) which I thought were cool even though I've never touched a bassoon in my life. Thanks for watching!
