Hi! My name is Stefan Schmalhaus. I'm a journalist and book author from Germany. A couple of years ago, I became heavily involved in the knife community. I started writing and photographing for the German knife magazine “Messer Magazin”, and soon after, in 2014, I published a well-received book on pocket knives. The English translation of the book was released in 2018. I occasionally review knives here on my RU-vid channel. Most of my videos are about elegant folding knives. If you enjoy my videos and don't mind my German accent, please subscribe to stay updated on new uploads.
Thank you for the video! Which brand would you recommend for a simple black horn corkscrew? Is there a shop in Germany that you can recommend? I‘m based in Munich. Thanks!
This is a Laguiole video, I'm not sure why you ask for a corkscrew. But if you're interested in a Laguiole knife with a corkscrew, there's a shop in Munich you should visit: Hans Nahr, Sendlinger Straße 1 (messerexklusive.de/). They sell beautiful sommelier knives by Forge de Laguiole. EDIT: I just looked it up on Google Maps. It says "Permanently closed". 😞
After your comment on the Hubertus video, I decided to check out the Mercator as well! It's such an interesting history, I couldn't help but buy one with the classic "black cat" and one with the new Otter Messer otter!
do appreate your kind tone in the videos. been thinking of getting a water bottle pouch after all for my bag too. glad to hear it is ok to carry! i was worried how the weight would carry too.
@@disarmyouwitha Otter is a highly respected manufacturer. They make the famous Mercator knife (also known as the black cat knife). I think it's a good thing. The family that owns the Hubertus brand wasn't able to find a successor to run their own factory so they licensed the business to Otter.
Very frustrating that Maxpedition doesn't make a sleek clamshell pouch with a belt clip for EDC. Everything is bulky and over-engineered for hikers and stormtroopers.
Hi I'm not sure if this post is still active but he ho , i was lucky enough to get hold of one of his beautiful navette knives and it is perfect, on closer inspection i find it amazing how he had hidden the pin for the back spring the middle pin you see is holding the scales ,i feel very lucky to own this 🍻👍🙏
WAYYYY over built & bulky compared to the little amount of space available to store things. That's a common issue with Maxpedition. I have the Mini & Micro pouches which are fine with space, but these would be too little for the bulk it creates. For example, if you pack the inside by using all the pockets then you can barely fit anything in the outside panels.
It’s hilarious Stefan how close captioning translates when you say Laguiole It has never translated it the same way twice using words like you all are La Girl I love the knife by the way
@@StefanSchmalhaus Laguiole Tradition France #440 Green and Red with Beautiful File Work It wasn’t terribly expensive but I’m hopeful that it will be a nice introduction to French knives for me
I love your content! I'm 74 and want to give my grandson an old fashion German pocket knife. I can't find Linder, Hubertus or vintage Robert Klass anywhere. Do you have any suggestions? Something limited edition or vintage would be cool.
You didn't even tell me where you live. How am I supposed to know where you can find vintage German pocket knives? Get your grandson a Böker Sportmesser. Böker calls it Camp Knife in English. You should be able to order it from the Böker website. It's an iconic German pocket knife that's been around since 1869.
Very nice. Hi from South west France. The only thing I don't like on those knives is the word ''Sons'' written in too big letters that draw too much attention. As far as I'm concerned, those ''japanese'' and ''navy'' douk douk are much more beautiful than the ''original'' Douk douk.
Are you new to the knife world? It's a slipjoint knife, the spring keeps the blade open. Don't confuse this kind of knife with knives that have a spring-supported opening mechanism.
@@StefanSchmalhaus Not new to knives at all, I'm from Sheffield, the home of the finest knives ever made. I was just curious as to the purpose of the spring in this instance, you've explained so thanks very much.
I got my first Laguiole en Aubrac knife today (with Hammered Bolsters & Double Chiseled Plates Horn Tip Handle). I love it! What a beauty! I also have an old Rousselon Freres Laguiole knife from around the end of 19th beginning of 20th century. Thank you for the informative video!!! It is perfectly made!!!👏👏👏
Thank you for your kind and prompt response. Their knives are what I call the elegance of simplicity. Functional and beautiful, and.. not available anymore.@@StefanSchmalhaus
Did the Spartan become the Minimalist? Looks the same but it has been a decade. Oh it is the #229 but Amazon just listing it dumb. Says Spartan in the details.
