Welcome to Get Up and Game! where we like to start every day right with a game on the table! My name is Josh and I make solo playthroughs of board and card games. I like to try to inject a little humor and narrative into my videos so I hope you have fun while you’re here!
My favorite games are the Marvel Champions and the Lord of the Rings Card Games by Fantasy Flight Games, so you'll be seeing a lot of that here. But I might occasionally play other games as well whenever the wind blows another way!
As for me, I'm very much a beginner in the content creator world so I hope you'll join along with me as I learn new things everyday!
I am new to the game. I thought you video was interesting and fair. I do have a question. It seem s not only in your video but in others The Hulk not a great superhero to play. I am wondering if there is a way to beef him so he is even a little better? Any advise?
Hello and welcome to the game! Yeah, unfortunately, there were some complications with the Hulk’s design and he came out the other side pretty disappointing for most. There have been some cards released that work particularly well with him that come with the SP//DR pack. Namely Limitless Stamina and Unshakable. Those are almost must haves to really get the most out of the green Goliath. In the end his cards are just less good than other heroes and he doesn’t have a hook or a gimmick that make him unique, but you can still have fun playing with him!
Haha yeah it’s so crazy how fast time goes! Feels like we’ve been in X-men forever but at the same time now that it’s almost over it’s flying by. So so excited to see what’s next!
37:00 I have played well over a hundred games and did not know that. I thought I could only play 1 card. Great video. For new players watching this realize that you may need to do a Google search often. Usually if you are unclear other people were too, My favorite game despite the sometimes confusion.
I have 29 villains and I played through them in order. Then immediately played them all again with different modulars and it was like a different game. Headhunter's Henchman is tough because Rhino's scheming has to be stayed on top of. Lost my first game against Rhino in a while but was fun. Great video.
That’s awesome! It’s amazing how much switching the mods can change the experience, and I know a lot of people even to this day continue to be reluctant to do it so I was really trying hard to convince people to give it a shot. Thanks for sharing and for the kind words!
It’s really a toss up for me. I think they’re different enough that I enjoy both. Forced to choose I think I still prefer to control multiple characters, as the positioning of the different heroes is fun. But what I tend to do is play a scenario once with a team, and then play it again with that team but as a Commander solo focusing on one of the heroes. Best of both worlds! 😀
I was kinda disappointed with the Risky Business scenario because when it was revealed, I loved the concept, but like you said, it’s just too easy. I would love to see them revisit the concept with someone else; with what they’ve learned in 5 years of designing villains in this game, I think the idea would come out much better. Just look at what they’ve done with multi-villain scenarios since the Wrecking Crew. I don’t know enough about the lore to know who would fit that bill (I definitely don’t play this game because of the theme.)
@@GetUpandGame I have! I own and have played everything. It hadn’t really occurred to me that’s what Spiral was, but now that you mention it, she kinda is that.
this is prolly going on someones top 10 dumbest questions list but what does the villain do if you’ve gotten rid of every scheme and youre in alter-ego form? where do those threats go. cuz i got rid of the main scheme (if i did it right) and im switched to peter but rhino has nothing to scheme on i misplaced one of my handbooks so uh thanks to anyone that answers
Not a dumb question at all! You can never get rid of the main scheme. If you take all the threat off of it it just sits there, and it will still collect threat as normal during step 1 of the villain phase, and the villain scheming will still put threat on it
Hey, just found this game in 2nd hand store never used. Your video helps get over the dismal rule booklet. Thx. Your Cards are laminated. How do you do that?
Oh nice! Always happy to hear when this game gets some love 😀. There’s a better rule book in the files section of its BGG entry so that could be helpful to you boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/240843 I found some sleeves that happen to fit on Amazon! a.co/d/aqoE0Gc
Thank you very much! I don’t currently have any plans to make any like this any time soon, and I’m actually on a hiatus at the moment, but it’s certainly something I’d like to revisit down the road! In the meantime if you ever want any specific recommendations or advice I’m always happy to help!
I prefer the villain packs because of the modulars: Hero cards may give you new strategies (many times broken strategies) but villains and modulars give you replayability, choosing them at random it's the main source of fun for me.
Agreed! I absolutely love getting more modular sets 😀. And the later ones not in this video are getting even better since they have permanent effects on the game ❤️
@@GetUpandGame I just bought The Hood to spice the game, those 9 modulars AND standard/expert 2 are just impossible to ignore. Maybe I will get Age of Apocalypse next for standard/expert 3!
@@ZuoKalp fantastic! The Hood is such a great buy, as is AoA. Weirdly there is no Expert 3, but Standard 3 is absolutely fantastic and has completely replaced Standard 1 for me
@@GetUpandGame No expert 3? I just assumed they would include it alongside. Not like I would complain if that means a getting more variety, if anything I could use the expert cards from the other sets.
Hey, you got defender of the nine realms wrong. If you can't find a minion, then you should consider the condition satisfied. So you do get to pay the cost and execute the card.
Hello! The ruling on this one has flip flopped a couple times, but currently if you don’t find a minion then you aren’t considered to have paid the cost so you don’t get to remove the threat 😕
@@GetUpandGame You are right. The rulebook says: """ If the encounter deck is emptied this way, that card ability is considered to be fulfilled. """ However it seems they made a ruling in hall of heroes: """When a cost in the ability of a player card prompts you to discard from the encounter deck and find a specific type of encounter card, you must find that type of card in order to successfully pay the cost of the card and resolve the effect after the cost arrow. If you can’t fulfill the entire cost upon emptying the encounter deck, the effect “fizzles.” """ I find this extremely confusing
@@crepusculo1027 typically when you’re discarding cards from the encounter deck for an effect, usually looking for a minion or something due to a treachery, then the effect is considered fulfilled once the deck runs out. Meaning you don’t need to keep flipping after reshuffling in order to find that minion. But in this case since finding a minion is part of the cost of the card, it must be fully fulfilled in order for the effect of the card to take place. But in the end you’re right it is confusing because they’ve changed their minds a couple of times on it 🤷♂️ lol
Have you every played upper decks ‘marvel legendary’? I thought of it cus you where talking about customizability. It lets you customize its equivalent of the encounter deck, but also lets you mix and match their ‘villains’ with their ‘schemes’. It’s a deck builder, but you buy cards into your deck during the game, rather than drafting them all before
Yep! Really fun game! I ended up selling it cause it didn’t really work for me as a solo game but the times I got to play it with other people I really enjoyed it. Crazy that it’s still going strong. I watch Waris Ali play it on RU-vid and the new stuff is still really cool! And you’re right the customization is incredible 😀
I THINK Hawkeye had the ‘1 energy give an ally tough’ card in his starter deck, so his nemesis has pericing to keep you from blocking with an ally without loosing them
@@GetUpandGame great videos btw, I just recently got into the game and I feel like I learn a lot from these. Galaxies was my first expansion Cus I didn’t read anything ahead of time lmao
@@ancel2236 thank you very much! I’m always very glad to hear when the videos are helpful ☺️. Ouch lol, well glad you stuck with the game anyways! GMW is certainly rough 😅
To be noted: for Wolverines "Tentacle strike", if you are stunned that 4 damage is happening even in AE for those who went home for safety due low health or dealing with 'death factor' before 'next turn recover'. (or Deadpool). Also Omega-Red will wipe out some would-be chump blockers (possibly making new candidates) and ping any toughs.
As for "Consume the World", there are a few effects that add threat to side schemes in addition to her scheming. EG: Masterplan Kinda sucks in MPer if CtW comes out, then something made her activate vs AE, then Masterplan then...pop! All in 1 villain phase :( Ah, destiny...
I don't play marvel champions, nor do Intend to get into it. But, personally, I would be more likely to subrscibe if there was some more of other games as well. Particularly solo.
That’s fair! It was always my intention to play more varied solo games but a growing obsession with Champions mixed with a tightening of my free time led to me being a mostly Champions focused channel. And as of now I’m on hiatus while my most recently born son is still very small. But I appreciate you checking this video out and for the valuable feedback! ☺️
I admit I buy more for theme and less for what cards come with that theme, and build base on what I get, so I kinda have a decent spiderverse and avengers set, and not sure where to go. I want to get some xmen to support them, just not sure what to focus on.
i think his advice is solid. One thing I noticed with Xmen is their cards are very wide spread, so I initially only bought a few Xmen, but now planning to buy almost all of it (with very few exceptions)
Oh shoot, sorry buddy, I didn’t mean to ignore this comment! I’m sure it’s been too long for me to offer any helpful advice so now I’m just curious what you decided to do?
@@jfducusin7186 actually rl got in the way so I had to sidestep for a bit. But my game club did get interested in this, and I think I may start with cyclops and wolverine, then get gambit, and then buy the first xmen campaign box. I also need to get Kang yet. Incidentially... .we need a Hells Kitchen set. With Bullseye, the Punisher, Electra, Cloak and Dagger, and Ghost Rider, with Kingpin and his syndicate as enemies.
@@Teachermook totally agree with jf lol, the X-men are very setup where the more the merrier! I would recommend getting Mutant Genesis first if you can and you know you’re going to be getting it eventually, it comes with a lot of key X-men supports and allies
Really great video. But ou didn't explain right away that the Core Set is andatory. I think you should explain espacially for beginer that before buying any set they should buy the core set.
Oh jeez you’re right! I kinda took it for granted since that’s how all these games work but I absolutely should’ve made that explicitly clear at the beginning. Good call!
Been awhile since the last one of these and i had a playthrough of my own with cap which would be a perfect one done in this style, where he takes on Klaw with the sinister synidate mod set. Felt like a pulp novel!
Ha awesome! I love putting different villain groups in Klaw 👍 Yeah I would love to have the time to make more of these. This could easily be a whole series on its own. Maybe someday lol
Oh awesome! Welcome to the game and to the channel! Always happy to hear when my stuff is helpful ☺️. Some of it’s a little dated at this point so if you have any questions please feel free to ask!
I have a question I can’t find the answer to anywhere…. So what is the best way to play this game? Like I know how to play, but ehat is some of the preferred ways? I’m new so should I just play through all campaigns in order, should I randomize the hero/villian/aspect. I have all the content but kinda lost where to go… any advice?
That’s a fantastic question! I don’t think there is a definitive answer sadly. This game was designed to be a sandbox of mix and match arcade goodness, so it’s truly whatever you want to make of it. But I can offer a few suggestions. Certainly randomizing is one way to go. I played for awhile where I had all the villains in a pile and shuffled them up, revealed three and picked one that seemed the most fun at the time. Did the same with the mod sets and picked the one that I thought would match well. For heroes I’m usually in the mood to play a certain one so I just played that one against whatever scenario my piles had spit out. Another way to go would be to play the campaigns for sure. Not necessarily in order cause then you have to play GMW early on lol. I’d probably go in reverse order since they’ve largely been getting better. And finally there’s always my Perfect Matchups Progression series I concocted to answer this very question! If you haven’t seen it then you can find it here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1I2q3sT6FoA.htmlsi=tlmR7fX7nvrfbiXf Basically I took every hero and found a really fun villain matchup for it so it’s 43 games that will use all of your content except for the most recent wave (I’m updating it in the future to include them though). So check that out and maybe that will keep you busy for awhile! 😀
@@GetUpandGame thanks so much for the advice! I think this concept of ways to engage in the game could be an interesting video because I can’t find it anywhere haha! Thanks easy subscriber here! Thanks!
Oh thank you very much! 🙏😀 That’s the next thing I’m working on! I’m very slow these days after having my second child a few months ago, but the next thing on the channel when I get to it will be a whole new set of Perfect Matchups, including the X-Force wave!
I keep hearing people say you can "trigger encounter cards" in other peoples turns...the rules clearly state otherwise. "Player Turn"...In the "ask a friend to do an action", there is NO "trigger encounter card" option (Note: As stated in "Ownership; Encounter cards are "Controlled" by the scenario), it only appears in the list for the active player! Very much the same as someone else cannot do "basic actions" nor "play an upgrade" during your turn - because they are not in that "ask a friend" list. Sure, YOU can do ANY encounter card during YOUR turn including those infront of others), but no one except the active player can clear ANY encounter cards - "Obligations" are 'specifically called out exceptions' (can ONLY be the influenced player). So "No you cannot remove "Solid-Sound Body" during someone else turn in MPer".
One of the earliest rules questions asked to the designers was about this very thing! From Hall of Heroes: Can you request an action to remove an encounter card attachment for another player, like say, with Black Panther’s Vibranium, out of turn like all other actions? That sounds like a small oversight to me. You absolutely can ask a friend to resolve the Hero Action on an encounter card during your turn. -Caleb So we’ve known for a long time that it was their intention to allow this. Now that being said, weirdly it’s still not in the Player Turn section of the latest Rules Reference 1.5, so other than the designer himself saying this was allowed I don’t know how else we’re supposed to know it’s ok 🤷♂️
Very beginner question: how can you tell what sets can be replaced when building a villain's encounter deck? especially with villains that list many sets in their setup (I just started playing Crossbones and it mentions like 5 sets 😅)
Good stuff, and what a birthday present! Happy birthday bud, hope the offspring are letting you get some sleep, or at least letting you get some games in...
yeah, i am one of the dirty casuals that just wants a relaxing, not-especially-challenging marvel champions experience i legit don't understand the players who think this is apparently invalid. like, it is much easier for a player that wants a hard as nails game to just substitute-in a really hard modular set, use the Expert or Standard II encounter cards, play on Heroic where the villain gets extra encounter card plays, etc etc etc than it is for me to find a good way of making a villain whose baseline is very hard to somehow make that easier. modulars like Hope and Longshot help, but are nowhere near as granular a knob as the escalating make-this-harder options
Oh my gosh so sorry I missed your comment for so long! I totally agree! More options to make it easier please! Then we can do even more mixing and matching to calibrate the difficulty right where we want it 👍👍
Hey GuG, Would you recommend adding Rogue in order to grow and X-Men collection? MG expansion is my next box buy and I’ll be getting Wolverine’s hp. Basically, which two X-Men hero packs would you recommend to build quality decks for X-Men/Force? Basically I don’t want to, nor feel the need to buy every expansion and pack in order to match all traits and teams. I wouldn’t play all of the heroes. I’d rather buy an expansion, then build with hero packs and behind the pre-com deck cards.
Oh gosh, sorry buddy, I’m just now seeing some comments I completely missed. I apologize for not offering advice when you asked for it, what did you decide to do?
@@GetUpandGame I added Rogue. I’m content complete with exclusion of Ice Man. I haven’t played since early Spring. I did 6 months straight so many times a week, and want to avoid burn-out.
@@jerpanic1 nice! Always good to avoid burnout 👍 Honestly I don’t think I’ve played since a couple games when ice man first came out, though it’s more out of lack of time for me than anything. I was hoping to be getting less busy by now but unfortunately it seems to be the opposite 😅
@@GetUpandGame would you mind sending me an invite to marvel champions discord?? I have no clue how to join without an invite. I’m going to start playing again soon-ish
