I have binge watched the majority of your videos. My surgery is scheduled for July 16, and I am on the 2 week pre-op diet. I'm struggling a bit. I am worried about if I am mentally prepared for this or not. I just want to say THANK YOU! I have learned so much! You are so sweet, honest, and understanding. Please keep up them coming.
I am so glad that you are finding my videos helpful! I think that all of us had some self doubt during that period leading up to surgery. I am sure that you will do great- just know that you are not alone in these feelings! Good luck in your journey!
Do you know if the medication metoprolol can cause RH or mess with your glucose levels? There is some info on the internet about it causing hyperglycemia. I was put on a low dose 12.5 mgs after my surgery for benign palpitations caused by either the bypass w HH repair, Covid 2 months PO or thrown into menopause at the same time or all 3 lolol just wondering if it could have contributed to me getting RH. I don’t see my cardiologist for a few months to ask about it but honestly, not all physicians are educated on RH so I’m not sure how that conversation would go. I will take any advice you have on the subject.
Hi there! To my knowledge, metoprolol does not cause hypoglycemia BUT the class that metoprolol belongs to, beta blockers, can block you from feeling the symptoms of hypoglycemia until your glucose gets very low. This is a common side effect in people who take beta blockers and have diabetes or problems with low glucose. It could be that the metoprolol did not cause the RH but taking it has blocked the cues that your glucose is dropping, leading to more severe episodes. I would talk to your physician or HCP about changing to another class of medication. Good luck!
Hey Kaki. This one really hit home. I have a friend who we (my husband and I) have always had occasions revolving around wine with her and her husband. It’s been really uncomfortable when we get together because I no longer like to drink and she still does. So my strategy is to set up scenarios where we can’t drink. We live 2 hours apart, so I arrange shopping trips to our midway point. That way we have to drive and can’t drink at lunch. I don’t think she’s on to me yet….
What a weird way to deal with a “friend.” Why can’t you just be honest with her? Aren’t friends supposed to support us and listen to our concerns? If you can’t be honest with her, is she really your friend?
It is hard dealing with people sometimes when you have changed and they have not. Good luck on continuing your journey the way that is healthiest for you!
My tight distended tender tummy one week out is kind of bothering me. The glue has not come off yet, and I don't have any severe pain, I just wondered if this is normal, what I'm feeling?
Hi there! I can tell you that I experienced very similar feelings that first couple of weeks. I was never in pain, just distended, bloated and uncomfortable. I would be sure to ask at your post-op appt or reach out to your team if anything changes or is worrisome. Good luck and congrats on your surgery!!
I had Roux and Y in 2005. I am now quite disabled with this. It is sporadic and I was prescribed a monitor but it was not covered. I am interested in the zoom dietician. I also will look into purchasing the monitor myself.
Definitely get a freestyle libre 3- it will give you so much insight into what triggers the episodes and warning before it gets too bad. The dietitian I use is Jodi Valdez- here is a link to her page: app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule/3e20f588
Hi Kaki! Enjoy your trip! I am 6 months PO, have lost 73lbs, and 39 inches so far. Before surgery I was a very good cook (too good), and whenever my family came over, I went all out. Well now, I rarely cook because of how I have to eat, and because of what I can tolerate. I can’t tolerate beef yet, and chicken is hit or miss….. very frustrating to take the time to cook a chicken meal only to find out after a few bites it is not going down well. So I do those frozen soy burgers, black bean burgers, or chicken patties that you microwave, or chicken salad, or chicken cold cuts, egg salad…. Things like that. Definitely something I would not put out for guests. My family wants to come over for July 4th, but I am not looking forward to having to figure out what to make, etc….. having to buy chips and dip and all that food that I don’t eat anymore….it is exhausting! Hate complaining. I feel like besides all that I am doing really well and feel good. Having to entertain makes me feel stressed and deprived, and I don’t feel like that in my usual day to day. Help?
Oh my- I can see why you feel stressed- anyone would! You are preparing food that you no longer eat or enjoy, and I know it would make me feel like the hired help! Honestly, since you are already obligated, I would focus on making a few things that you can eat and enjoy, (deviled eggs, chicken salad, a charcuterie tray?) and then reduce the usual "spread" of food that you do for others. Hopefully your family is coming over mostly for the fellowship and the food is secondary. If anyone asks, I would tell them that your lifestyle and choices have changed and you hope they can support that. Good luck!
My surgery was last Wednesday 6/19. Will be on liquids until the 7/5. My concern is the transition to soft. What shall I expect? What are your suggestions or advice in this stage of my journey?
Congrats on your surgery! Every plan is different, so not sure what yours recommends in that soft stage. I tolerated very small amounts of things like refried beans, yogurt, tuna, cottage cheese, egg whites and dark meat chicken. The main thing is take your time eating and chew well. If something does not sit well, wait a few days and try it again. Good luck.
@@kakisrnyjourney5376 thank you for your advice & words of encouragement. The liquid thus far has been tolerable. Let’s see what the next few weeks bring. Enjoy your vacation.
Thank you for the advice. My surgery is scheduled for July 11th, I’m so excited but I’m so worried about being able to afford the protein shakes. I’m on a fixed income and have 2 teenagers so we are struggling already, do I pay the utilities this month or buy groceries. I understand I’m going to be eating so much less, I’m just trying to figure it out in my head. Any suggestions?
I am sorry that you are having a tough time. Protein shakes are so expensive! Honestly, I used them very little. Maybe for a few mos I had one in the morning for breakfast. "Real food" is always preferable. You probably won't be able to tolerate shakes for a while, then when you are able to transition to real food, work hard on finding things that you can handle that you don't have to spend extra money on. Some things that most folks tolerate quickly are canned tuna, dark meat chicken, especially if cooked in a crock pot or pressure cooker, eggs (I could handle egg whites but not the yolks for a while), cottage cheese and yogurt. Good luck!
@@kakisrnyjourney5376 I find it’s definitely different for each person on this journey. No matter the size yet health issues is the major concern. I really don’t understand why people would repeat this surgery. I know I will never do it again. Staying driven looking forward to working out
I seen my doctor she said give it 6 more weeks if the scale hasn't moved we will discuss wegovy with my bariatric surgeon, I'm hitting the gym 3x a week and I'm drinking over 100 oz of water a day. I'm also increasing protein see how that goes.
I have a lot of trouble with constipation which eventually it ends up with diarrhea. A month or so ago I didn’t have a BM for 8days! That was painful. It finally resolved and the next day I finally dropped into Onederland! Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom with us every week.
Hi all, I am 7.5 years out. My first year or so, I struggled with stalls. I did at first panic and try to eat less, like Kaki said that was an error in thought. I found that if I increased my calories by and extra small meal a day, it would kick start my losing again. It was difficult for me to wrap my head around eating more to lose, but it helped in that first 1.5 years. I was a slow loser but did reach goal at about a year. Also I did track everything I put in my mouth. Good luck!!
Sometimes i think it's related to " portion creep", ie, eating more food. Other times, I think it's the body's way of taking a breather. Then, I need to be tolerant of the stall. I have to remind myself that it's okay to not lose every week. Thank you for your videos.
Experiencing a month stall right now and it is difficult. I would love to hear what helps you stay positive and motivated on your journey as you move further out from surgery.
It is difficult. What keeps me motivated is looking at how far I have come and embracing the changes in my body and health.Along the way, when I hit stalls, I said to myself, "If this is all you lose, then you are still in a better place than you were". I wasn't happy if that was the case, but it did give me perspective on my progress.
That scale can be a bad mind trip lol And If your working out, you really cannot depend on that scale. It is better to go by pictures, measurements, how clothes fit etc. I also got a dexa scan done when I first started going to the gym 6 months ago and I will have another one done next month to show what my progress has been. When I was diagnosed with RH a month ago, I cleaned up my diet, added more protein, no junk etc ..my carbs have naturally been in the 40-50s... I lost 2 lbs of the 35 lbs of regain right away...and it hasn't moved back down since then... but I am not giving into the number and I know if I keep going, something is and will change. I already feel a million times better and I am able to up my strength training. Just have to keep going! I have seen people weight the same, but their whole body composition has changed for the good.
My year up is July 11 , since my 9 month check up down just 5 pounds, but I'm sure a lot better than I was , but I do feel like I get more hungry than I have been in past , glad of your video today
This is a recent issue for me at 15 months out. Not pleasant. My worst episode I almost blacked out with a bs of 25. I think I have it under control right now.
Very informative video! Stress is a major problem for me thank you for addressing this problem. Still working on my insurance approval for surgery that alone is stressful enough! As always you look amazing keep the videos coming! Much love ❤
Hi Kaki….. great info…. Question…. Almost 6 months PO gastric bypass and 71 lbs down - trying to get more exercise in, and I was walking about 2 miles a few times a week, but I live in Florida, and the weather is so hot. I wanted to know if you could share any exercise videos (you tube) you may have tried or are using. Some I looked at are a little too vigorous for me (newer to working out). Thanks for any info 😊
Hi there! I love to walk as well, but am the same way- when it is hot, forget about it! I love this channel. It is a lady who does videos with her elderly Mom and she shows modifications to make things more challenging or easier. www.youtube.com/@yes2next
Kaki can you tell me what’s the name of Sox & everything else you use to prevent blood clots. My surgery is June 19 2024. Also I’d like to do a video blog of my journey. Any suggestions on how to begin?
Hi there! I did not use any compression socks for blood clot prevention- for me the key was walking, walking, walking! I walked when I was still in recovery a couple hours after surgery and the evening of my surgery once I was in a room. I got up every couple hours and walked, I think that is the biggest preventative that you can do. As far the video blog- just start! I did a pre-op video talking about my decisions and past, then one the night before. It does not have to be fancy. You will be so glad that you did!
Great video Kaki. Firstly, happy birthday 🎉 I had three misconceptions before my surgery: I could eat what I want and still lose weight I would lose weight without having to do any exercise I would never be able to eat out again Of course, all of them were wrong 😂
Happy Birthday Kaki ! I'm 7 months post op at 183 lbs goal is 152 but I'm on another stall . I see my doctor soon ... I'm down 80 lbs ! Any stall advice ?
Congrats on your weight loss! Do you log your food in an app? The first thing that I always do is go back and look at what has changed- have my macros changed, ie more carbs or fats, less protein? Have I added more processed snacks like protein bars or chips, tortillas, etc?
Happy Birthday!! I turned 51 last week and will be having RNY later this summer/fall. Your videos have been so helpful through this journey! Thank you!
Kaki, I had my surgery Tuesday. I had a few complications and the surgery took 5 1/2 hours but all is good. My doctor was able to do the RNY instead of the sleeve. I am thankful for that. I am having minimal pain but a lot of discomfort and nausea. I am so excited to be starting this journey. I look forward to more of your videos. Love to you and Happy Birthday! ♥🌺
Congrats on your surgery- I am sorry you had a few complications but glad that your pain level is good. I hope that all goes well from here and you start to enjoy your new post-op life!
